TOURIST VISA: BANK STATEMENT REQUIRED; WHY?

Thanks for viewing my post. I am from London and planning on flying out to Cali in September. Having had a look at what is required in order for a tourist visa to be issued, I have a couple of questions:

(i) Why is a copy of my bank statement required? Will it affect my application if I am into an overdraft, i.e. have a bank account with a negative balance? I still have funds available to me because I am nowhere near the limit of my overdraft.

(ii) Is a letter of invitation from a Colombian national/resident or a hotel booking really required?

Thanks for any help/advice on these issues!

i took a quick look at the colombian embassy's website. if london is still in the united kingdom, you do not need a tourist visa to enter colombia. the only countries that need the tourist visa are: argelia, cuba, egypt, haiti, india, iran, kenya, morrocco, nicaragua, nigeria, dominican rep., people's republic of china, and senegal.

Visa at airport I'm a Londoner, all you need is a return air ticket. Your passport is stamped on arrival (free as I remember) then you pay an exit tax when you leave.

You need nothing You do not need anything to go to colombia if your holidays are going to be for not more than 3 months. How ever, do you know what a Colombian joe needs to go to UK?. well....Bank Statetements (why? I do not know!) and the Yankee Visa (call it USA Visa)(why? I do not know as well!).

I Assune You.... are a British subject and NOT a national of a country that requires the issuance of a formal tourist visa for entry into Colombia. As others have stated a British subject does NOT require a formal visa. Your passport is sufficient.

TOURIST VISA REQUIRED. If you are a national of any of the following countries you must have a formal visa issued by a consulate:

Algeria Bulgaria China Egypt Haiti Hungary India Iran Kenya Morocco Nicaragua Nigeria Poland Dominican Republic Romania Russia Senegal

Requirements (SEE NUMBER 7):

1. Valid Passport with at least 3 available pages and good for a minimum of 3 months.

2. Two (2) passport copies. plain copies please.

3. Visa application form duly signed and filled out in duplicate.

4. Two (2) colored passport-type pictures (2"x2").

5. Invitation letter and/or flight and hotels reservations.

6. Copy of the round-trip ticket.

7. Proof that financial capacity is sufficient to take care of expenses while in the country.

El Flaco.... When did you last go to colombia? I'm a Londoner too. I went last June 2004 and didn't have to pay an exit tax. The lady at the checkin desk said that because my ticket was bought in the EU I didn't need to pay.

On a similar note... I am an Irishman in Venezuela and trying to spend a bit of time in Colombia - well, as much time as possible - before we leave on August 19th. I have been told today by the Colombian Consulate here in Merida that it could take 8 days for the visa to come through - does anybody know if this is really the case? Is there anything we can say to fast track it? Anybody heard of other Irish people that have done this recently?

Tomatico....the exit tax was included with the purchase price of your tickets.......certain airlines collect it up front....

Just my opinion...

Goose How long are you going to Cali for?

I just looked at the consulate website:

http://colombianconsulate.co.uk/

Where it does say, what you mention above, but as a UK citizen you can enter Colombia without a visa for short stays, just a return or onward ticket needed.

Famsearch. That's what I said in the original post: "I assume you are a British subject and NOT a national of a country that requires the issuance of a formal tourist visa for entry into Colombia. As others have stated a British subject does NOT require a formal visa. Your passport is sufficient."

I thought the next paragraph was self explanatory: "TOURIST VISA REQUIRED. If you are a national of any of the following countries you must have a formal visa issued by a consulate:

Algeria Bulgaria China Egypt Haiti Hungary India Iran Kenya Morocco Nicaragua Nigeria Poland Dominican Republic Romania Russia Senegal."

I was making sure he IS a British subject and not there as a citizen of a country that might require a formal visa from the Colombian consulate.
