Tourism: 1 step forward, 1 step back

Article in the Miami Herald about the Lost City:

Adjacent article by the same reporter about a side trip to a working cocaine laboratory:

The tour guide/cocaine lab operator must have nothing to fear from the police. He gives his name and age and allows people to take pictures...

Well, as it says in the opening paragraphs of article: "Illegal right-wing paramilitaries also have a strong presence here, in part to protect their illicit cocaine trade from invaders and rivals" so I guess that explains why he's not too worried. It also, interestingly, says he actually makes more money from the guided tours of his laboratory than from Cocaine itself.

Btw, the Lost City tour is truly spectacular.

I have heard first hand the trip can be interesting! I had a friend from Seattle who made the trip. He said the journey up you see some things you probably are not supposed to see. Then my last trip to Santa Marta. I met a gal from France on a dive trip in the National Park Tayrona who hiked up to Ciudad Perdida. She said the trip up they dodged a few military check points, hiked past people who looked to be cultavating a pot field then crossed paths with a hand full of people who were carrying automatic weapons. She said the guide knew them all. She said it was a fantastic time and that she would certainly do it again! Viva Colombia!
