Where do you find that information?

UNIVERSIDAD MILITAR NUEVA GRANADA; TOP 1. I can´t believe it! in the best case is on the top 20, but never in the top 10.

Why no Colombian universities in top 500? I have taught in schools in US, China, Africa and South America.

First, research in Colombian universities is almost non existent.

Second, the research that is done frequently lacks the academic rigour required of modern research.

Third, PhD is Colombian universities are rare. Moreover, many Colombian universities, including Javierian, Los Andes and Externado allow people with bachelors degrees or less to conduct classes.

Finally, paternalism abounds. Credentials and work is unimportant. Rather, it’s who you know and who your cousin is.

Simply put: Colombian universities are as corrupt as the society.

You have to love that statement. You would be surprised at how many classes are taught in major U.S. universities by people with degrees less than the doctorate.

As much of the weighting is based on research done at universities it will stand to reason that the wealthier the country the better their universities will fare in such a ranking.

I would say that if you mention you graduated from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge you would be known worldwide as somebody with an education. Some of those other high ranking universities would be virtually unknown in many areas of the globe despite the fact that they are perhaps very good universities.

yes kernow that would explain the status of a university like Imperial College in London...it only offers science based degrees but would give Oxford and Cambridge a good run for their money...outside of the UK however I doubt that many people would have heard of Imperial College.

Irothko I dont know where you get that from, but TA's at los andes have to be at least in the process of getting their masters degree.

Money is the Problem? he money equals research argument -- ok.

If you take that logic, then why would China, a country with much lower per capita income than Colombia, have 6 universities in the top 500?

Also, why would Mexico have 2 in the top one hundred universities in the world?

I am not claiming that money is not part of the issue. Yet schools like Javeriana or Los Andes certainly have no fewer resources than, lets say, Fudan University in China. Would you disagree?

Moreover, look at Javierian’s current spending spree: new sports facility, new religious studies library, new Negrit sculpture. All these certainly surpass like facilities at Fudan Universrity, Bejing University and many others.

I am not saying that money is absent from the problem. However, the lack of money argument is a simple answer forwarded by simple minds. Sorry, if this offends, but I work in one of these name universities in Bogotá. I see day to day people complain about the lack of money as an excuse for not getting things done. Look a little deeper and maybe you will find more complex answers.

Perhaps the answer is simplistic, and perhaps compared to you I am a simpleton, but I should imagine GDP per capita should not be how you base a country's ability to spend. China has a lot more economic clout or overall GDP than does Colombia, and so does Mexico. If a country throws more of its resources at its universities or if a country has more resoures set aside for research then that countries universities will obviously fare better in the ratings.

I don't think it is the only reason, but it has to be part of the equation.
