Top Cities in South America (According to Yahoo)

Yahoo just published their list of top cities in South America. Out of 16, 4 are in Colombia:

Top Cities in South America

1 Buenos Aires
2 Rio de Janeiro
3 Santiago
4 Sao Paulo
5 Bogota
6 Lima
7 Caracas
8 Cartagena
9 Quito
10 Salvador
11 Belo Horizonte
12 Barranquilla
13 San Andres Island
14 Buzios
15 San Carlos de Bariloche
16 Machu Picchu

They don't exactly specify what their criteria was to rank these cities, but I believe it has to do with tourism?

Wow, 25% of the cities on the list are Colombia, that's great!! Too bad they left out Medellin, that's another great city that is worth visiting too.

Here's what they say about Colombia on there:

"Colombia may very well be South America's best-kept secret. Many professionals in the industry already see it as the next hot tourist destination in the Western Hemisphere. Only a few years ago, this would have been unthinkable. Yes, it is true: Colombia remains a volatile and dangerous country, trapped in a circle of violence. There's been no final act in the bloody drama that is being played out by drug lords, terrorists, guerrillas, vigilantes and corrupt politicians. Ordinary citizens, and on rare occasions, travelers, continue to be caught in the crossfire, despite ongoing negotiations between the country's president and its guerrilla and right-wing paramilitary groups. And yet travelers come back from Colombia unharmed and raving about the beauty of this country and its hospitable, friendly people. No wonder: What's not to love about the magic of Colombia's mist-shrouded mountains capped with snow, charming colonial cities, golden-sand beaches and vast green stretches of rain forest?"

Medellin is most likely number 17.

I have no idea how they determined this list, especially since Machu Picchu is not a city but a destination (one of the wonders of the world).

25% of the places, since some are not cities, in Colombia. Impressive, considering that it is no where near 25% of the population or land area of S. America.

Y claro Pereira y Manizales (Colombia)...;)

Yes, the great well-known city of San Andres and thriving metropolis of Machu Pichu. Santiago, from my brief time there, seemed like a shithole, and I've heard nasty things about Caracas, very dangerous place. This seems like YahooTravel trying to sell us destinations.

RAAAY says on Sep 11, 2007, 20:39:

Well.......I have'nt been to Caracas, Santiago or Bariloche.
Sao Paulo ...?? From my experience it should'nt be on any list. Quito did'nt do a lot for me either. But I have'nt read the article/link.....so don't know what criteria they are using to make up the list...........top cities...??
From my personal experiencies...........I would change the listings around and base it on the places I enjoyed most. Rio would be on top.
As for the place that would most take your breath away ( literally )......that would be Machu Picchu ............
San Andreas for the diving........................Cartagena for the times sitting at outdoor cafes drinkig red wine....................
Buzios for ........hmmmm ....what was her name ? ahhhhhh

All these places bring so many memories...................all within the last five years too.........

Ray, I agree...Sao Paulo?! I have to go there on business and wouldn't necessarily want to vacation there. I can see Salvador and Rio being on the list, although I don't have personal experience.

Machu Picchu on the other hand is truly beautiful, no arguments there. And there are so many other parts of Peru that I would return to. I would've put Cusco over Lima any day.

Not because I’m from barrranquilla, but I will replace Bogotá with Barranquilla and make Bogotá number 6. I’ve been to Bogotá and is no different than Quito, Lima, is got that very Andean ijun look going, sad and somber, way, way, way, way, way too many little injuns for me. Hey! I love injuns but not all at once.
Barranquilla has that Caribbean big modern city look, don’t see any injuns around only me.

Not to pick on Bogotá after all is the nation’s capital and a damn good one, but if I may I like to share my first impression.
Maybe is me, maybe I got a screw lose, but when I see sweaters and jackets in a supposedly tropical nation, it bums me out, it just not the way it suppose to be.
Latin nation to me is sun and palm trees.
I was walking around Bogotá and saw all these little Andean looking injuns with very pretty bright apple red cheeks and jet black hair, like mine USED to be, but I never had red cheeks, my faces was always a deep dark copper tone tan.
As I walked around I kept asking myself where the fok am I, in Quito? Lima? Cuzco? Cochabamba? La Paz? I thought I landed in Colombia and why do they look so sad, nobody is smiling?
In Barranquilla, you could be eating sand for dinner but we still have a big fokin smile.

Man Tequila, I was in the Salar de Uyuni. The place is incredible. Bolivia has a lot of beautiful places. For example, Potosi is the most colonial city of South America (with Quito Ecuador). Then you have the Lago Titicaca, Santa Cruz de la Sierra (under 2.000 mts). Of course La Paz & Cochabamba...but over more of 4.000 mts. If you have problems with sea-sick, so this is the place to get dizzy.
Is a very good travel that can include Salta & Jujuy (Argentina), and Antofagasta & Iquique (Chile).
