I’ve commented before how nasty the older women in my town can be. Today was a perfect example of some of the BS that they pull.
On Wednesdays Olympica discounts their vegetables 25%. I feed 9 people in our family. It helps to save a bit here and there. We always are there early on that day to get the best selection.
My wife and I were in the vegetable section preparing various bags. I’d prepared bags of onions, tomatoes, red peppers, limes and went for some cilantro. When I returned to my bags (about one minute later) ½ half my stuff was gone. There was some old lady standing next to my stuff. I looked at her canasta and she had my bags in it. I told her that she’d taken my bags and got no response from her. Intentional? I have to say yes. Waiting for me to turn my back? I believe so. No Lo Siento, yo Regresso sus cosas, nada. So I calmly reached into her canasta and took my things back. I was so hoping that she’d say something as I had a slew of words ready for her. None nice. I had to hold my wife back from her tearing into the old lady.
This isn’t the first time I’ve/we've caught people taking things out of my shopping cart. One time I had to stop a man from taking shoes that I selected and another time a woman wanted to help herself to some baby clothes that we'd chosen. The man and woman were quite rude and put out when I confronted them and politely asked them to leave my things alone.
So anti-social actions aren’t limited to just the old women of my town. However, they seem to have a handle on it and are teaching their children the same behavior.
Colombia is the only country in which I’ve had such experiences. Go figure. In my book that a pretty disrepectful and rude thing to do. In ANY country!
Ah, the life of living in Colombia. Never a dull moment.

Lowell's experiences are not universally the case, since more than a few people either simply mind their own business or can be actually helpful and considerate, but still more common in Colombia than any of us would like.

I forgot I had my burger in the fridge!" So he runs off all happy to get it and then I hear him say "Hey! you're eating my lunch!" I go there and sure enough, there were 4 Mexican guys eating all the leftovers in the fridge just before they clean it out because it was the last Friday of the month. Man, that just craked me up!!! For over a week, I would find my sandwich missing, an apple missing, or the entire bag gone. After a week of progressively writing my name on the bag bigger and bigger, hiding my lunch in the corner of the fridge, making comments out loud about how rude people can be, I finally decided to take empower myself and do something about it. I told my wife that I'd make my own lunch, but instead of putting something yummy, I put some dog shit between two pieces of bread with lettuce and tomato. My lunch was stolen again that day, but I never had a repeat of that problem. "Life is too serious to be taken seriously" 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
