I just watched the doc. It was as could be expected; a cheap ad for the Betancourt’s, complete with Mama B. being kissed all over her face by orphans ON THE SAME DAY of Ingrid's kidnapping.
I think it was pure child abuse! ...she was actually preaching to these kids her politics on that day, and in front of the camera! …using the orphans of her orphanage to promote a political agenda to kids that were not older than 10 or 12 !
Worst yet, is the fact that nowhere in the documentary is it stated how low Ingrid’s popularity was in the polls, prior to her kidnapping, and how the whole nation pleaded with her not to go to el Caguan.
Much worst yet, was how unbalanced the documentary presented the Colombian government. Statements like “Samper had bought the congress� went unchallenged in the film (because no matter how corrupt that administration may have/ have not been, such blanket statements are pure propaganda). Heck, if Colombia had been so corrupt back then, then how on earth did Colombia ever manage to elect someone like Uribe?
The American women (Victoria Bruce and Karin Hayes) who created the doc. (for HBO) had a fascination for Ingrid during her presidential bid. That’s all fine and dandy, but when will Colombia receive fair press for the world to see?
…Gee, now that I think about it, I think we finally have a chance, now that Tony Bourdain went to eat in Colombia, but most especially now that we have Brian Andrews !

I guess some people need to hero worship. Ingrid is a very smart woman and she showed a lot of dignity when released, but I wouldn't hand her the keys to the car just yet. I am sure she has had a lot of time to reflect and grow in captivity and is not th same woman that was kidnapped. But everything else aside, the fact that she's so beholden to France, precludes me from ever wanting her as president of Colombia. You would never know which master she was serving, Colombia, or France. She could make an excellent foreign minister though. I like that way she told Chavez and his pet dog correa to respect Colombian democracy when she was released.

"The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt" had so many advertisments, it was hard to keep my focus, but I liked it. There was also a song at the end of it that while most likely not sung by a native Colombian (my step mother is from Colombia), was really beautiful nevertheless. I googled it and saw the performer was John Margolis and it was written by "John Margolis, Don Rosler, with inspiration by Isabelle Keating" but no other info. re that song. If Colombia ever really starts to pump money into tourism outside of the country, in US or Europe (or do they already there), then any airline or Colombian tourist board should snatch up this song. I stayed up for the midnight airing just to hear the song again. Can't find download.
