To Miguel Clavo

I posted this in the thread where you made reference to two anti-mexican posters, one of them a colombian female who doesn't live in Colombia.

I don't know if you were talking about me, but I am trying to clear the air. Since the other article seems to be in forum limbo, here is what I wrote:

What colombiana are you talking about? I hope it isn't me, because I have absolutely nothing against Mexicans. Never did. I have Mexican friends and I am actually quite familiar with the culture.

In my responses to Gomezman's thread I actually wondered why different latino nationalities are at each other's throats when we should actually work together. It never ceases to amaze me how people with so much in common could put each other down. We end up further marginalizing ourselves.

If you are referring to my joke about "my going rate for setting Mexicanas straight", it was just that -- a joke in reponse to gomezman saying he would pay me to go to chicago and set her straight. I honestly meant to offence or disrespect to Mexicans, as you are the ones who paved the way for other hispanics in the US.

I don't believe in "latino eating latino". I believe in "La unión hace la fuerza".

A toda madre y sin desmadres.

Well, I can say with certainty ....{(edited) it's late} That if it was you that Miguel-Clavo was making reference to, he is not correct. First of all there is quite a bit of Mexican bashing on this board, but Colombiche has never been a participant in that realm. In fact, I can substantiate with absolute certaintly that she did include a post toward the begining of my thread where she had commented about how she could not understand why Latinos attack each other. I remember that post because I thought to myself at the time that she misunderstood where I was going in my post. I just happened to mention the fact that she was Mexican because I wanted to illustrate that I was forced to hire a Mexican as opposed to a Colombian because she was the better candidate. At the same time, there was a part of me that I saw as ironic in that I have always been accused of being pro Mexican and anti Colombian...(here on PBH).

From what I know of Colombiche, I feel that she is NOT the type of person that would harbor resentment against any single group of people, and certainly not her fellow Latinos. She will criticize the person because of who he/she is, not because from where he/she has come.

CB I wasn't referring to you specifically (but if the shoe fits...), but to the Latino population in general.

I suppose it's human nature to hang together with your own tribe, but it's easy to take things too far. Case in point: today is the first day of work for the first of 6,000 National Guard to be posted along the U.S. / Mexico border to help keep THEM out.

I can't help but think that if more Mexicans had been more willing to embrace the American people and our culture (such as it is), that President Bush would not have had to call in the troops.

And yes, I realize that it's not quite that simple.

Well johna...... While you may be less than pleased with American culture, you will have a hard time convincing me that allowing this country to get invaded by the millions is a better alternative than taking the appropriate steps to change things right here.

By the way, I don't know from what planet you are coming from, but your above post refer to crooked politicians, and when it comes to corruption and bad politics, the US doen not hold a candle to that of Mexico. In fact, anyone who even has a clue of what is happening down there, will tell you that the main reason Mexicans have to come here in droves, is because of the corruption and lack of ability of Mexico's leaders to tend to the needs of their people. Do you question that point?

I live on the planet earth and a big chunk of it is being destroyed by a group of thieves who cheated their way through the presidential elections in the US. Now that they theived their way in (mexican gov. can take lessons) they refuse to sign international environmental conventions, start wars, and keep up the war on drugs while abandoning the one on poverty. Now you know what planet I am living on. Does that help? By the way did I say anything about illegal immigration being a good thing? I was simply pointing out that the reason they are not wanted, is not because of their refusual to embrace "American culture". In fact it is the opposite. American "culture" refusing to accept them.

So to answer your last question.... ...yes I question the point. In the US 10% pay little proportional tax and have money that one can only dream of. This is the superrich or as Bush calls them "his base". You have the same thing going on in Mexico but with a smaller economy. So no I don't think they are that much worse. Yes we have a better standard of living in the US due to historical forces, not better leadership in the present.

Johna, I think one thing US has over ALL countries.. is wealth of "opportunity". Other countries might have happier folks, less stress, more orderly or liberal, etc., BUT no where in the world is there a place where people of all ethnic/cultural/national/racial/social background have a decent chance to improve their economic condition by hardwork.

You constantly hear or seen people that started with nothing(incl no education) and within one generation they or their family jump one or two economic class. Lots of those people are immigrants(legal) that came with nothing, then they work, went to school at night, got their degree and start working or started their own business. Then in 10-20 yrs became very successful. US govt GIVES money to go to school(in forms of grants or loans), US banks LOAN money to help start businesses or buy house for people with NO credit history. Top colleges recruit poor student and provide them with financial aid. When the student graduate, companies hire them NOT caring what their social background was.

US companies dont care what your family "was", only if you can make them money. If you work hard, make your company money, they GIVE you more money! And if they don't OTHER companies will hire you away AND GIVE YOU MORE MONEY!

One reason we american can sit around and bitch about our country is because we have the luxury of have time on our hand. We don't have to work every minute of the day IF WE DONT WANT TO. In COL, for example, people work LONG hrs, 10-12 hrs M-F, then 4 hrs on Sat.

I suppose it is concievable you can get here through Central America and Mexico, but that is something possible in theory more than it being a reality. G5, Gringodiego Dismissing America's problems because "its worse somewhere else" is hardly patriotic. Yes, political corruption is far worse in Mexico and a host of other countries than it is in the U.S. So what ? The fact that Vicente Fox has done pretty much nada to reduce corruption in Mexico (or improve the economy, which incidentally, might help stem the tide of illegal border crossings) is absolutely NO excuse for U.S. politicians to pull the crap that they do.

Patriots do not compare their countries to the worst, but to the best.

And yes, Americans are basically charitable, we have to be because we can't depend on our government to do diddly. I forked over a few hundred $$$ to the Red Cross after Katrina, because it was obvious that FEMA couldn't find their ass with both hands. A few months later the news came out that the Red Cross was equally incompetent. So all I accomplished was to help fund some federal circle-jerk, while the city of New Orleans languished under-water.

corazon en colombia says on Jun 6, 2006, 15:38:

Illegal Immigration I am writing this because I have a very different point of view due to my life experiences. I know many of these "illegal aliens" and formed valuable friendships with some. Some of them are much harder workers and stronger people than any of us could hope to be. They are strong because life has been difficult for them. They have suffered things I have not. I am an American citizen because I was born here. Lucky me, I have always had a roof over my head and an opportunity to receive an education and therefore have some tools to form a good life. I have not lived in extreme poverty and do not know what it is like to eat tortillas with salt for dinner (or go hungry) because there wasn't money for anything else. I have not lived in a shack by the river, that when it flooded took the few material possessions I owned. I have not shined shoes on the street or sold candy instead of going to school to help support my family. I have not had to risk my life, or be separated from the ones I love for extended periods of time in order to provide food for my family. I am not condoning illegal immigration, but I am saying before judging, try to imagine how the majority of the world lives. Most “illegals” (as you choose to call them, although I prefer undocumented workers) are here fighting for a chance in life. You can't make lemonade when life gives you contaminated, rotten lemons, or nothing at all. As to coming by legal means, if they could have, they would have!!! There is no visa that I know of for people that have a third grade education (or none at all) and not a penny in the bank. There is no legal way provided in our current system for them. Obviously our country couldn't sustain unlimited numbers of immigrants legal or illegal. Eventually the jobs available would fill up and if there were no jobs, maybe they would stop coming. These people that are working here, are also buying here: food, clothing, etc. They are contributing millions to our economy and many wish to be a permanent part of it and to make a posivive contribution to this society. We are depending on them to fill jobs that others would refuse to do. I do not claim the system we have is working! There is a definate need for change. We are all citizens of this earth. Can we not have a little compassion for our fellow human beings! Unless people can make a decent living wage in their own country they will keep trying to come – no matter what the cost! It is the natural instinct to survive that pushes them to search for something better. Only in a world of injustice can that be illegal. Tell me please, if you were in their shoes would you not do the same?

P.S. Imagine if the Native Americans would have refused the settlers' visas. Just a thought.

I am over it. Whatever G5 does is up to him. Personally I think that I did very little personal attacking, I did not question anyones character, or "what they are made of". I didn't refer to anyone as an ignorant slob. I did not call anyone "comical to say the least". I mainly stuck to the issues and stated my opinion, the punk thing is pretty minor in the scope of things. There are a lot worse words out there. I did not call anyone a whiner, I accused them of avoiding debate and whining (not being a whiner). You are a whiner is different then you are whining. So email away if that is what you want, I think it would be pretty petty though, and it may backfire. :)

johna....you're right about one thing Yes you are quite comical. I like the way you parse things with the whine, whiner and whining stuff. Kernow tried that too.

Naaa. No more emails. I already accomplished what I wanted. I caught your insult, I whined to Tinto, and he responded. No sense beating a dead horse.Speaking of beating a dead horse, I don't mean to whine anymore, but....I'm done with this thread. So I'll let you fire your last shot, but be assured, I will not see it, nor will I respond.

Hey, maybe Gringodiego can do it for you........fire away, but it will be like pissing in the wind since this thread has long outlived its usefullness. I can see it will only be a matter of time before Tinto pulls out the lock and shackles this one down. It probably should have been done already............out of here kiddies
