To get married in San Andres / Casarse en San Andres

I read in previous forum postings about being easy to get married in San Andres. Is that true? Leí en fijaciones de foro anteriores sobre ser fácil para casarme en Andres San. ¿Es verdadero?

My girlfriend lives in Bogota and I live in the United Kingdom of Great Britian. In your opinion, where should you think we get married? Mi novia vive en Bogotá y vivo en el Reino Unido de Gran Britian. ¿En su opinión, dónde debería usted pensar que nos casamos?

Very easy- you as a forenger only need your valid the passport. She needs her Cédula de Ciudadania" (Colombian national ID) and her Registro Civil de ambos con Nota para matrimonio which basically attests to her never having been married or is now legally divorced.

This is for a civil marriage-church wedding you jump through all the hoops. If you plan on moving to the UK I would check with their embassy to make sure GB does not require additional paperwork for her visa.

No, it would not be a problem-but the catholic wedding on San Andres requires all the paperwork from the church. Happens all the time. I am Catholic as is my wife. She would have had a heart attack if I even mentioned a non-Catholic wedding or the quickie on San Andres (which was not problem since we were married well before the San Andres requirements were changed.)

The Church provides several different rites for marriage:

The Catholic Church has requirements before Catholics can be considered validly married in the eyes of the Church. A valid Catholic marriage results from four elements: (1) the spouses are free to marry; (2) they freely exchange their consent; (3) in consenting to marry, they have the intention to marry for life, to be faithful to one another and be open to children; and (4) their consent is given in the presence of two witnesses and before a properly authorized Church minister. Exceptions to the last requirement must be approved by church authority.

The are several rites usually apply: the second is likely the one that would apply to you

1 A sacramental rite during the Eucharist, which is the usual (but not mandatory) form when both parties are Catholic;
2 A sacramental rite outside Eucharist, which is the usual (but not mandatory) form when one party is baptized, but not Catholic;

there are to two documents that are absolutely necessary to marry in the catholic church.

One is a statement from the clerk of the superior clerk in your county that states that a search was done and that there were no records of marriage for you. I believe that it has to also be apostille

The second document is an affidavit of free status to marry from the catholic church.

Have your novia set up a meeting with the Parrish priest where she would like to be married and run it by him BEFOREHAND.

Jumbo,

Supposedly there's a new law enacted within the last week for San Andres, which requires all marriages to meet the same criteria for marriages in the mainland.

Try to contact www.saiweddings.com. The wedding coordinator should be able to answer all your questions regarding a Catholic wedding in San Andrés.

Ley 915 del 21 de Octubre del 2004. I called our notary here in Bogotá and you are correct. The Constitutional Court ruled in late October the special regulation of marriages in San Andres was not consistent with the Act 915 of 2004 on the Economic and Social Development department in force in the rest of Colombia.

The Constitutional Court ruled the special regulation of marriages in the archipelago of San Andres were not consistent with the Act 915 of 2004 on the Economic and Social Development department. The same mariage requirements in force in Colombia now apply to San Andres.

For those living in sin do NOT panic. The Court noted that the marriages before Octoberr 29,2008, under the old rules performed in the archipelago of San Andres are valid under the law. However, to be legal from now on the marriages must be made and conform to the general system that operates throughout the country.
