Maybe a comfirmation from chavez would satisfy you? Since he gave Reyes a minute of silence, he might grant marulanda a whole day of national mourning.

No no inconsistency there, as i have prefaced all my comments with a "if it is true", but nice attempt. And like i alluded to above, who would know best of his demise, but his host chavez? BTW, I am taking you at your word that the recent news coming out of Colombia is not upsetting you.

0 funny, 0 helpful.

romy says on May 24, 2008, 23:34:

I wasn't showing an inconsistency (haven't you figured out that we think differently by now). I was showing that you ARE satisfied with a guy with "a big mouth". Which, I guess speaks on your character but that's all.

billyb says on May 24, 2008, 23:39:

jajaa, i might have given you too much credit if that is what you get out of that statement. BTW, when i said "no inconsistency', i meant on my part. Might those schools in canada have remedial english classes?

romy says on May 24, 2008, 23:44:

you are satisfied with Santos' statement and you mention Santos has a big mouth. It's basic logic, they call it deduction reasoning.

billyb says on May 24, 2008, 23:51:

I am very satisfied with his statement, if true, but that has nothing to do with being satisfied with him on balance, again, you might want to check into those classes i mentioned above. And it seems, that contrary to your previous protestations to the contrary, which I was willing to believe, it is becoming more apperent that you are not very happy with the recent turn of events as they pertain to Colombia.

billyb says on May 25, 2008, 00:06:

i don't know that El Choco will be safe any time soon as the FARC is just one of the many unsavory actors causing misery there, but you can pick up some very good land in Cauca department dirt cheap that will appreciate very fast if this trend continues.

webmanco says on May 25, 2008, 09:21:

Media manipulation from the government.

In case it is true it shows again the lack of power of our military forces including that of paramilitares in order to rule our country.

The death from natural causes of "Sure shot" and the murder of Ivan Rojas, and surrender of Karina, although a loss to the Farcs, can not be taken as a victory from Colombia Military forces. If any it means in the case of Ivan Rojas and the surrender of Karina that the Farcs got some internal problems.

Lots of social investment would be needed, if that has not been the case until now, I hope to see the social work done with the truthfull "reinsertados", whereever they come from.

...A yo, déjenme queto y no me jodan má! ...

0 funny, 0 helpful.

juancegomez says on May 25, 2008, 09:34:

Not really. FARC confirmed it so I don't see the "manipulation".

Also, webmanco, do you really need a list of other military operations that have in fact produced results?

Even if FARC has internal divisions, you can´t ignore that military pressure has likely helped to increase them. If that weren't the case, several of those incidents you mention probably wouldn't happen.

Marulanda's death, if it was in fact natural, is something else entirely.

More social investment is certainly necessary, and urgently so in fact. That front has been neglected by Uribe. But the war per se can't be neglected either, as much as it may pain me to say it.

Samper increased social investment and benefits for many poor Colombians, it was in his political platform and also helped him stay afloat during the crisis, but that didn't exactly help him fight the war against FARC. In fact, the worst defeats were going on at the same time.

In short, you need social investment and you need military pressure.

webmanco says on May 25, 2008, 09:46:

I was talking about Goverment manipulation of the media in order to create more deserction front the Farc´s files.

http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/colombian-president-uribe-says-f...

If you consider money rewards and impunity a military pressure then yes, they indeed increase farc´s internal division, and of course there had been a few real military confrontations with guerrilas, killings and arrests but those had not been succesful enough to release most of kidnapped or to make most guerrilleros to turn in their guns, and to change the mind of those who truly enjoy the farcs for ideology and not just for money.

...A yo, déjenme queto y no me jodan má! ...

0 funny, 0 helpful.

juancegomez says on May 25, 2008, 10:11:

Then you shouldn't have posted the same message in a thread that is only talking about Marulanda.

And come on...you know that's not everything I meant by military pressure.

Btw, I do not measure success exclusively in terms of "are all hostages released now or has all of FARC demobilized".

0 funny, 0 helpful.

webmanco says on May 25, 2008, 10:21:

Then should I had said, Tirofijos death is been manipulate by the Goverment thru the media to motivate guerrilleros to demobilized, that would make it suit for this thread

...A yo, déjenme queto y no me jodan má! ...

0 funny, 0 helpful.

juancegomez says on May 25, 2008, 10:28:

Well, that's probably more accurate. But it's manipulation based on an apparently factual death.

gatogris says on May 25, 2008, 10:40:

The FARC is seriously on the wane. The bounty collected on Ivan Rios, the kangaroo trials against its own members, the unrelenting pressure, the last vestiges of external support melting away, the withering away of an animating ideological platform, the shift in the center of gravity in the cocaine trade, all these factors and more are accelerating its demise.

It turns out that, according to Reyes' computer, Tirofijo was still very much in control of major tactical decisions, so his death only adds to this list.

The real question is how much longer can their centralized organizational structure last. Major divisions will be disbanding sooner than many suspect. An indigenous NGO operating on the Easternmost Vaupes river has repented signs of major dissent in one of the largest contingents of FARC soldiers.

SiV says on May 25, 2008, 13:24:

Yes, Pod, I'm sceptical about what the Colombian govt. says, especially los Santos (Juan Manual or Pacho).
If the Farc have confirmed it, that's good enough for me, I guess.

I'm certainly not going to mourn Marulanda's death, unless it means a worsening in the conflict, which it could well do if that monster Jojoy becomes the No.1.

gato, i was always of the impression that marulanda had been either dead or so sick as to be irrelevant for the last four years, but as you mention, Reyes' PCs indicate otherwise, so the news of his demise is so much better.
