tired of explaining

it happened again, i told an aquaintance that i often travelled to Colombia, first thing out of his mouth was all negative....why do you go there?
1. isnt there alot of crime down there?
2. isnt that the country where coca comes from?
3. isnt that a poor country?
4. isnt there alot of desease down there?
ha..and get this one, i couldnt beleive he was saying this
5. isnt everyone black down there?

i didnt know weather to get pissed off or just laugh at him.

what i finally did was ask him if he had ever been to Colombia or for that matter anywhere in south america and of course his answer was no. so i told him i would just be wasting my time trying to explain Colombia to him, I gave him a few sites on the internet and get a freakin education.

sad that so many people dont have a clue.to bad for them they are the ones losing out.

I am used to the same thing. To be honest I would be hypocritical to look down upon someone with stereotypes of the country. I certainly had many that were fairly inaccurate and disingenuous about Colombia before ever experiencing it.

You should just pretend you're hard-core, people will look at you differently ;)

Ignorance is bliss. Sometimes I wonder if ignorance isn't better. Many ignorant people seem to be more happy. Heck, why not they don't know what's going on, so less worries, concerns, stress.........

Colombia continues to be dangerous for locals. 2 days ago a female school teacher was killed at her school. Great education for the kids. Yesterday many children and teachers marched in protest. Suspect still at large.

Ok so I live in NYC so when I travel abroad I'm asked similar questions about New York. Lets answer the same questions:

1. isnt there alot of crime down there? its gone down compared to Detroit and Los Angeles

2. isnt that the country where coca comes from? Actually we have coca coming from the south, opium from the east, heroin from the west, weve started growing our own marihuana, but overall out addictions have gotten a lot more sophisticated since the studio 54 days.

3. isnt that a poor country? no not really we exploit all other countries and assist in making sure they accumulate massive amounts of debt. thus allowing for our political and financial clout to take over.

4. isnt there alot of desease down there? the list is long. you name it we got it. you could even joined the quarantined crew.

5. isnt everyone black down there? no not everyone just all athletes and most entertainers/musicians.

i feel a hell of a lot safer in our home in envigado and the finca in llano grande than i do here.

we live in a wonderful old neighborhood in daytona beach...the highlands. however, it's surrounded by hood. and needless to say, hoodlums. i personally fall short of an understanding why such desperation grows in the heart of black youth, why they'ld kill for kicks or a couple of dollars; why they'ld perpetrate such meyhem in their own communities on their own kin/kind. don't construe this as a raciest posture, as it is not. unfortunately, an exhorbatently high percentage of violent and non violent crime is the work of the afr. american community. between 75 and 85%. open eyed observation is not profiling.

Stark, big difference in people being ignorant about foreign countries and hating foreigners, i dont know how you have connected the two??

MM, big difference between people being ignorant about the country of Colombia and its people, culture, etc and illegal mexicans invading our borders at 500,000 per year, again i dont see the connection only in the fact that you like to argue.
Mexico deserves to be bad mouthed they have done nothiong to stop the flow of illegals, their soldiers even help the cartel, they are destroying our land, they are breaking the law, they are even kidnapping americans in border cities. I'd say theres a big difference between someone who is ignorant about Colombia and illegals invading america.

Re silly questions about skin color:

I was getting my ears lowered the other day and shooting the breeze with a new barber. She was going on and on about U.S. immigration problems; she (of Scandinavian heritage) married some guy from an African country I barely recognized. I surmised he was "out of status" when they married and now they are jumping through hoops to make him a legal resident/legal worker. Then we switched to travel. I mentioned Colombia in South America (I made sure to mention South America). She goes..."Ah, are your friends black?" Haha.

Ignorance has a really negative connotation. In reality being unaware of something makes you ignorant to it. I am born in the USA but raised by Colombian parents. I consider msyelf both Colombian and American. I hear ignorant comments about both the US and Colombia all the time. Depending on my patience and my blood alcohol level at that particular moment I decide wether to educate them accordingly or curse them out. :)
