Three americans thanked the colombian military

Stories
Anatomy Of A Hostage Rescue
Home Sweet Home For 3 U.S. Hostages

(AP) The three American hostages rescued by Colombia's military said in their first public statement that they are doing fine and are thrilled to "return home to the country we love."

In a statement released late Friday by the U.S. Army, the men thanked their families, the Colombian military and the U.S. government, "who never forgot us."

"For five and a half long years, we all hoped and prayed this day would come," the men said. "Now that it has, we're just overwhelmed with emotion. The love and the joy we're all experiencing is beyond description."

The three freed American hostages - Keith Stansell, Marc Gonsalves and Thomas Howes - have been receiving medical care at Brooke Army Medical Center at San Antonio's Fort Sam Houston. The three were working for a Northrop Grumman Corp. subsidiary when their drug-surveillance plane went down in Colombia's southern jungle in February 2003.

They were among 15 hostages, including French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and 11 Colombians, rescued by Colombia's military in a daring mission Wednesday.

In their statement, which was released on the Fourth of July, the men said, "We can't think of a better time to thank our fellow citizens for never giving up on us, for never forgetting us, for always believing that we would, one day, return home to the country we love."

In an interview broadcast Saturday, Stansell's Colombian fiancee told that nation's RCN Radio that she has traveled to meet him in Texas along with their 5-year-old twin boys, who will see their father for the first time.

Patricia Medina said she and Stansell plan to get married. She spoke before leaving Colombia on Friday for San Antonio.

Medina was pregnant when Stansell's plane went down. Stansell later learned in captivity that she had given birth to twins, Nicolas and Keith.

"We're going to organize the wedding," Medina said. "We talked to Keith last night. He talked with the boys."

She said that Stansell told her "he's super happy, and that he's waiting for us there."

Former Colombian Sen. Luis Eladio Perez, who was freed in February, says he relayed Stansell's marriage proposal to Medina back then, and she accepted.

Medina met Stansell in April 2002 while working as a flight attendant on an Avianca flight.

Stansell, who has other children from a previous marriage, has also been reunited with 16-year-old Kyle and 19-year-old Lauren, his ex-wife Kelly Coady said by phone from Sarasota, Fla.

their 'debriefing' will probably last several months if not more. they, being professional mercenaries...ex military....very serious soldiers, what they witnessed and observed will be very valuable info to the drug interdiction and intelligence community.

the fact that the lady with the twins was here almost immediately, is some small accomodation by the powers that be. if she was an avianca hostess, she already had a visa, and the boys are u.s. citizens born abroad. the guy kinda reminds me of that russian actor, dolfe lundgren (sp) extremely serious countenance, piercing eyes and chiseled features. the guy doesn't look like he's possessed of one gram of light hearted humor.

wish all these fellows all the best. like most professional soldiers, they'll probably want to get right back at it very soon. next time with even deeper conviction and really pissed off.

Absolutely correct! I highly doubt that our intelligence agencies ever forgot them, and don't forget that the U.S. played a huge role in both tracking the hostages and providing information critical to the organization of the release,no matter what circumstance in which it happened.

Although we don't negotiate with Terrorists, I have no doubt that we didn't keep the "eyes in the skies" focused on our boys with the intent of getting them back one day!

sanandressi says on Jul 6, 2008, 20:44:

The way I understand it they were in a small Cessna looking for coco fields and or laboratories. I would imagine the plane had some sort of cameras and other sorts of logistic equipment to map and give exact positions for those crop dusters that come along later. I read where they were in direct communication with the Embassy when the plane went down due to engine failure or a Farc bullet or two. If it was a single engine aircraft, I am kind of surprised they would send a single engine plane with 5 aboard as the pilot and a Colombian were killed.

There was an article somewhere about some Gringos doing the same at the airport in Tumaco. They keep a pretty low profile.

Washington seems to play these games in the most discreet way possible in my opinion. Look at the Embassy in Bogota itself. Colombian gurads, Colombian employees, and window tinted vans and vehiocles enter from that one side. I have been told that the actual embassy is below the ground and is the most beautiful thing you can imagine with a tunnel that goes to Bogota's airport for a quick escape if the FARC ever did take control. I don't know if this is true or not?

Washington seems to keep as much of what they do as quiet as possible and especially with big mouths Chavez and Correa these days ready to pounce on anything.

Colombia is saying that Washington had little to do with this but I am not buying it for a second. The Reyes raid in Ecuador as well.

The Colombian military admits that the US military has helped them immensly in the last 10 years. Does Colombia have cell phone intercepting technology and spy satellites from outer space? I don't think so.

The 3 gringos...don't Americans pay less taxes when working overseas?

Most Americans had no clue these guys were kidnapped. If it had been a JOURNALIST it would have been all over the news every day!

Lcacique says on Jul 7, 2008, 11:28:

It was meant as a question not an accusation, Aaron. Nevertheless, you are right. I implied that you felt that the contractors were angelic. Of course, reading your comment you seem to be making a comparison between politicians and contractors and one is painted negatively and it appears that you are suggesting, at the very least, that the other does not suffer from these same negative characteristics. So, yes. I guess I could have reworded my question slightly.

I wholeheartedly agree that many politicians (because of their line of work) are prone to the qualities that you listed. However, I do not think that those qualities are unique to politicians. And the fact that the contractors were fighting a quasi-war does not somehow provide any evidence that would allow me to assume that they are more trustworthy.

sanandressi: Does Colombia have cell phone intercepting technology? Yes, I believe they probably do. They have purchased a lot of surveillance equipment from the US over the years. We have given the country billions of dollars (pre-Plan Colombia Plan Colombia the Andean Initiative) to enable the country to carry out such activities.
