Very, very rarely do we get the suspense in other leagues that we get in the Colombian league when the season reaches a climax.
I'm gripped by what is happening in Pereira and Cartagena at the moment as the pendulum swings both ways...one minute Medellin are in the final the next minute it's Real Cartagena.....the commentator reporting from Cartagena has me in stitches he does not know the meaning of impartiality (and I love him for it). This guy has just erupted in a manner that only a fervent Costeno would know how to.
The match has just finished and in their first season in the top flight the minnows from the tourist city will be in the final.
Colombian football does not have the players, the stadia or the money that the Mexican or Argentinian leagues have (much less the European ones) but what it has in buckets is passion...passion from the players, passion from the supporters and passion from the commentators....especially my man reporting from Cartagena. I was just treated to an enthralling climax to Group B of the cuadrangulares...before the round of matches Santa Fe lead the group and with an away win would claim the first final place, but within minutes Medellin were taking the lead away to Pereira and with the lead also came a place in the final...all this before Cartagena started scoring and fighting for the place themselves.....a spurt of goals from both cities had Medellin and Cartagena trading places every minute until the whistles were blown and the dust settled Real Cartagena topped the group...only goal difference seperated them from Medellin.
It's a nice day for Real Cartagena supporters and I would imagine there would be a special atmosphere in Cartagena today.
They are speaking to the commentator and every time I hear him my face lights up.
Group A's action has just got under way and already there's drama....but i'll leave that for later on...I can't even write coherently I'm in a rush to post this....anyone who wants to hear for themselves tune into radio Caracol now and get a slice of Colombian football.....
this is why the Colombian league is my favourite...and my team Quindio has no part to play yet I'm enthralled.....i can't even be bothered to watch match of the day at the moment!!!!!!
