As a tourist only you can bring your car to Colombia but must post a substantial bond with customs guaranteeing the vehicle will not be in Colombia for more than 30 days(I think)

I don't understand why people do this?! Target themselves? I waqs in Lago Calima and I saw a guy in a brand new Hummer, with special rims- you named it, the car had it. My first thought was why do people do this?
Does anyone know how much it would cost to bring a car to colombia from the states?

From what I have heard - Gator is correct. Except, I had the understanding that the car could stay in Colombia as long as the "tourist" stays. I know a car can be driven into Colombia, or even off-loaded from a ship, but it must also leave when the person who is in Colombia as a tourist leaves. ?????? That's just the impression I had from bits of info that I had gotten from here.

But however that car got into Colombia, I wouldn't give that guy a long life expectancy. Maybe the guy just wants to get some primo punani until he gets capped? Maybe he is a mafioso? I wouldn't want to be his insurance carrier; and I would want even less to be in his car or anywhere near him.

Yes........you can bring in a car.........no bond...no tax...no deposit.....no nada.........

And Ma Fe....as for being a target...??....there are loads of up-market cars here in Medellin and even more again in Bogota..........there does'nt seem to be any big deal.............I've driven all over the country on my bike over the last seven months.......Florida plates.............. and it sticks out like a sore thumb..........I have no quams about it...........despite all the warnings I got from folks here...............

I did remove the flags though.....

Mranderson - "No". (as a "tourist") .... at least not permanently. You can enter the country with a car or bike, but it must also leave with you at the end of your stay. The costs are enormous, the paperwork ridiculous - from what I hear.

Gator says on Feb 10, 2008, 08:25:

As RJ says the vehicle must leave when you do(that's why I posted 60 days) which is the normal stay granted by DAS on entry. Of course, it you extend your stay, the additional time would count by no more than 180 days.

Raaaay, where is that information??? According to MINCOMEX,"...no import licenses are approved for used automotive vehicles of any kind, used parts and accessories for tractors and automotive vehicles, or used tires, which in practice are all considered as prohibited items for import into Colombia." You can also call Subdirección de Comercio Exterior: 607-9999 in Bogotá or check with DIAN

R.J......To bring in a car or bike on a temp permit there are no costs at all...(.other than the freight.)..........and the paperwork is minimal........you must get a minimum of the SOAT insurance......which is not expensive.......mine was $120 for a full year.

Gator....................you quoted one of the provisions for importing goods on a permanent basis.......you cannot import a used car.........however a temp permit is a totally different thing. The law you quoted above is not relevlant .........

If, for example, you are bringing a car from Miami to Cartagena............first, you must submit the papers to US customs at Miami at least 72 hours before shipping. The Title must be clear of liens. After customs stamp the paperwork you shipper will procede. On arrival in Cartagena DIAN will check the vehicle.....and issue a temp permit. If on a tourist visa the permit will be issued for the number of days remaining on the visa. Maybe you got a 60 day tourist visa, but the car arrived 10 days after you........the car/bike permit will only be issued for the remaining 50 days.
If you have a different type of visa......fo example, a business visa.......the temp permit will be issued for 3 months............In both cases you can get an extension for another 3 months......there is no fee for this.

I know two guys here in Medellin with US registered cars on temp permits........and I know of 100's of guys that brought bikes in this way...........it happens all the time.......some are passing through Colombia on South American trips.........some are just staying in Colombia for the period.............Shipping the vehicle is the only charge...........no fees whatsever to the authourities here.

Ray, I know that Colombia is Colombia, so, just to ask:
have you already figure out how many times you can renew the temp permit? I do not mean by law, but in real life.

What if I wanted to bring a moto down here temporarily as a tourist? Do they check up on it? I mean if I returned to the states and "accidently" forgot to bring my moto back what would happen? I guess the other trick would be trying to register it in colombia. Basically my question is....is there any way to getting around the import laws to bring a used moto to colombia?

RAAAY says on Feb 10, 2008, 09:38:

Robi..............YES........photoshop. But if a fella was caught.....bye bye bike.
Safest thing is to do a trip to Ecuador or Venezuela........stay one night......and get another permit to bring it back in.

mranderson......................If you are checked here and have an expired permit.........your moto now belongs to the Goverment.........They WILL take it..............

robi666 says on Feb 10, 2008, 09:43:

I know of some people who brought in a car, pay at the transito and have it registered as Colombian.
Then, anyway, you should do a fake of the DIAN importation papers, because police sometimes ask for it.
Of course it can be done. Everything can be done, it is Colombia.

robi666 says on Feb 10, 2008, 09:49:

Ray, no joda compadre, dejame hablar...

Another trick they use:
you buy a wreck of a car, then you go to Maicao, they take everything off your car, take a stolen car from Venezuela, take everything off that car, put it on your chassis, here you go with a new car on your old chassis with VIN numbers. A couple of days and you are done.
To put a 2007 Toyota Burbuja on an old one is around 20 millions. That's why "Guajiro que se respecte tienes su Burbuja". :)

Then, of course, police knows about it, so they will remember you and your wreck going up in La Guajira. So be prepared to bribe police in Rioacha, Palomino, down to Santa Marta. After that you're in Cachacolandia and you're safe.

Now, you can use that trip to visit el Cabo de la Vela and to let a bruja Guajira put a Nino Dios under your skin, so you will be invulnerable to bullets for the rest of your life.
I know of a guy in Guachaca, police could not kill him, so the paracos had to go with a 4x4 over his head.
I don't know if that car was imported legally... Horrible death anyway...

RAAAY says on Feb 10, 2008, 13:06:

If you take a vehicle on a Temp permit........there are no taxes.............extending the 3 month permit is done at your local DIAN.........not Bogota..........maximum is 6 months..............then you must take the vehicle out of the country............you can bring it in again and get another 3 months and then a further extension......................however at some point they would cop on and tell you no more............

Thanx, but I would consider taking it out of the country and returning not doable. I am not anxious to do any inter-city driving in that bright red gringomobile. Venezula would be the closest border to Cartagena, and we AIN'T GONNA GO THERE, jaja. I was once in Venezuela for 5 hours and I would not relish a return.

Are you saying that I have to physically go to Bogota when the time comes.......or do the folks in Medellin send it to Bogota..??

Thanks.

.....Gator says...." Any problem when the revised computer system indicates all the in and out exits with the vehicle? "

I have'nt needed to leave yet.............they first gave me three months permit with the tourist visa.......then a one month extension as I was only able to get a one month extension of the tourist visa...............then, with the business visa they gave me a 6 month extension with the bike permit.......which I think they were in-correct to do this.........but I did'nt argue........so I'm good until April..............then I'll go to Venezuela and re-import the bike for the first time...........that plus the extension will give me a further 6 months............after that.......who knows....??

There are services in MDE that ship your paperwork to Bogotá. Then someone in Bogotá physically takes it to MRE to get the VISA. It takes around a week.
