This is the Colombia I know and Love

This is a thread dedicated to the "other" Colombia, far removed from the bars and nightclubs of El Poblado or Zona Rosa, the Chipichape Mall with aging gringos eyeballing teenage waitresses and shopclerks, in short, the Colombia that many foreigners have also met but most haven't and many of them wouldn't find a least bit interesting.

This is about Colombian popular culture, folklore and the provinces that don't receive a lot of attention.

Let's start with the Colombian Andes. This is what I first saw and could never forget.

Cheers,
Desi

A quick aside or segue into a periferially related topic:

I had a wonderful two weeks in the Choco last month and just came back from an incredible week hiking in the Eje and the Parque Nevados. In both cases, this site contributed to me and mine having a great time.

So despite all the kerfuffle and existential crises in recent days, it does what it is supposed to do. So, I suppose the appropriate response here is, not to get too saccahrine smarmy...

...thanks?

Some of the nicest people in the whole wide world thatI know come from the South Colombian fishermen town and port on the Pacific, Tumaco, near the Ecuadorean border. Tumaco is going through some rough times now sharing some of Buenaventura's problems of being the battleground of drug cartels, paras and Farcs. The sweet, soft-spoken Afro-Colombians of the Pacific coast have been the most isolated and neglected people of Colombia for as long as I can remember. Yet they have a culture of their own, their marimba music of the mangroves, currulao dances, artistic handicrafts, literature and cuisine.

Yes. MaFe, all Colombia is beautiful; however, the main purpose of this thread is not to celebrate Colombia's well known attractions or larger cities, like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla but to focus the attentionon the Colombia away from the spotlights. From Tumaco to Quibdó, from Manizales to Florencia, from the Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast to the fishermen villages on the Caribbean, from the llanos to Leticia, away from the culture of prepagos and siliconas, drug maffias and corrupt politicians, to find the true soul of Colombia.

Speaking about diversity... where else in the world can you find a "diversity" like in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta? It is awesome.
From 0 to almost 6000 meters in 50 kilometers. From the tropical beaches and reefs to the perennial glaciers.

billyb says on Feb 9, 2008, 15:04:

BTW, Desi, how did it get it's name in the first place? I mean who named it, was one your countrymen wondering around those parts in the 1800s?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Feb 9, 2008, 15:20:

I have no idea, billy. It's just something I read on the net. I don't think it has been any of my countrymen roaming the Colombian Andes who gave that town its name; rather a local politician who thought it sounded cool... I've never been in Filandia myself, but I have a friend whose father was born in that town and every time we meet I get to sit with the old man and talk about the meaning of the name of his home town ....:)

There are very few Finns who have actually lived in Colombia for more than perhaps a couple of years and most of those people have been sent there by their employers. I'm one of very, very few Finns who have lived in Colombia on their own initiative over a long period of time.
