"This Day in History" news item

Something that popped up in an online newspaper. It's news to me.

August 7, 1956
Mysterious explosions in Colombia

Seven army ammunition trucks explode in Cali, Colombia, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring thousands more on this day in 1956. The cause of the explosions remains a mystery.

The previous day, 20 trucks fully loaded with dynamite departed the Colombian city of Buenaventura. The trucks stopped in Cali and then 13 of the trucks headed toward Bogota, Colombia’s capital city. The remaining seven were headed to other destinations and were parked in downtown Cali overnight.

Just after midnight, all seven trucks suddenly exploded in a quick chain reaction. A nearby rail station was demolished, as was an army barracks. Five hundred soldiers in the barracks lost their lives in an instant. A three-block area of the densely populated city was absolutely razed. Virtually every window within several miles shattered. The trucks themselves were obliterated and a large crater was left in the ground. The heavy bronze doors of St. Paul’s Cathedral, more than 10 blocks away, were blown right off the church.

The president of Colombia, General Gustavo Pinilla, publicly charged that terrorists were to blame for the disaster, but no evidence was ever found that the explosion was deliberate.

My father-in-law always said that it was probably just an accident, but the government exploited the tragedy for political purposes.

Webmanco almost always needs to post something that it goes against the grain concerning the Beautiful image of Colombia. He either posts one of those lousy and/or unrelated photos, hijacks the thread, particularly when the thread has a very positive tone about Colombia or Colombians, and he loves to embrace two cultures that I have noticed are not in the best interest of Colombia, one of them is from his favorite country and the other one is from another country in Europe. I guess he loves to back up the one from Europe just for personal gain here in pbh.
For Webmanco, the term Colombiche has more value and self-enrichment than the term Colombian. COLOM + BICHE
His personal stuff is more important than Colombia and he does not care if the rest of the world or foreigners are learning from personal and often misleading info.

WoW (MoM upside down)
.
Looks like the U.S. congress should give this day some kind of special military holiday.
I'd suggest Colombia,, but they have very few working days left to give out.

On this Day: Congress Authorizes Vietnam War

On Aug. 7, 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution based on what is now widely believed to be faulty intelligence, plunging the United States into the Vietnam War.

WoW,, faulty intelligence,, how can that happen ? or is that some kind of OxyMoron ?

Amazing,, The U.S. not only frees Europe 60 plus years ago but builds a military vehicle that is the standard in Colombia for bussing campesinos to work, hauling bananas, other produce, livestock feed and,,, selling coffee !!!!

Nothing to date can come close,, if it could,, I'd see it on the rural roads,, well,, OK,, the toyota land cruiser,, 1992/1996 works a lot better,, but who can afford to haul all those goods in a landcruiser.
