Thinking of moving to Medellin, Colombia from New York

I have close relatives in new york, but I also have some cousins, aunts, uncles in medellin. The people in colombia are nicer, caring, and more loving than here in new york. I also love the beatiful mountains, scenery, farms, and not to mention the beautiful women.

I'm thinking of moving to Medellin to marry, have kids, raise a family, and live there. My family in New York think I'm crazy. They tell me the people in Medellin would die to come here to the US if they had the chance. Is this true?? Now, I am a computer professional working in New York. Is it very difficult finding work in the computer industry in Medellin?

Guys, how could you not love this city? sure, we all know is a little expensive. Hey, I don’t like paying $12 dollars for a drink (gin and tonic) but do what I do; go to dives in the village and only during happy hours when is $2.50. There’s a lotta things to do when you’re poor. I eat at Papaya, 2 hot dogs and drink for $2.75 and I always save a piece of bread to sit on a park bench and feed the pigeons. Sometimes I wear a long trench coat and masturbate while checking out the hot blondes roller-skating in Central Park. I love this city but I’m also planning on going back to Colombia.
I’m gonna be honest as to why I wanna live in Colombia and I’m sure a lotta you guys go there for the same reason. Why would I leave the greatest city in the world to gotto friggin Barranquilla? besides broads, drugs and booze, is something called status.
Here, I’m just miserable old spic no different than millions of spics walking these streets while in Barranquilla I’m a somebody, I’m “DON” modefoque. For white guys living in NYC, those Latina broads you love so much would not even look at your sorry ass for a split second while in Colombia they fight each other to get to you. There, you’re special; here you’re just another boring white guy to them (Latinas)
Sorry to brutally honest but I keeps it real!

I'll get there, when I get there!

Any of you guys seen that episode (I keeps it real!) on the Dave Chappelle show when a black woman, by keeping it real ends up doing hard time in prison.
Any Dave Chappelle fans here besides me?
He threw my daughter out during one of his stand up comedy routine, almost 5 years ago. My daughter keeps it real too; she’s got one nasty newyorican mouth.

I'll get there, when I get there!

panaca Make some money in NY, save as much as you can, holiday in Medellin, when you have enough to buy a place in Medellin, plus a small nest egg and haven't changed your mind, move there.

Property prices are not expensive in Medellin, so if you work hard in NY, it shouldn't take long.

Morphus, 2 mil/month is very good. Most IT jobs are under 1 mil.

I have to take some spanish classes first. I'm only a beginner level speaker. Companies won't hire me if I'm not fluent in spanish.

You are going to get crushed on this board today You don't know Spanish and want to move to Medellin and find work. I myself say go for it as you only live once. I am moving there in a few years myself. However it seems in this board everyone is going to tell you you are crazy. No work. Visa issues. Well not me. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I walk away from a lot of money if I leave my job before I turn 45. My friends at work etc. think I am crazy. I have a great job here and live well. The heck with it. I hate it here. I love Colombia and in five years I can live like a king. Anyway if I were younger and had nothing holding me back then I would try it also. What is the worst thing that can happen? You live there for awhile run out of money and can't find work. You have to come back to the USA because you can't afford to not work but now you have a great life experience. Then what if you can get work and a Visa and meet a beautiful woman. Then you are even better off. So go for it.

elmodefoque, Are you really moving to Barranquilla. That´s great. Let us know when you will be there. I have been dying to check that place out. As far as all who are moving to Colombia from the US. Go for it. hey you can always return, unless you are not a US citizen. I am planning to move there once I finish college, hopefully this new so called "free trade" agreement with the US will open doors for people like me who work in logistics.

Smile if you are a thinker!

Yeah cali, I wanna go back to Barranquilla real bad. My situation is different from you young ones, I got one foot in the grave so there’s no way I’m coming back to work. I ‘m going there only to putia y enborrachame every day.
My buddy Miguel told me something very interesting yesterday, “Donald Trump might be developing in Cartagena or surrounding areas” That only means that Barranquilla will now grow at an even faster rate and we all know Cartagena is just another barrio de Barranquilla. The way they’re both growing, it wont take long before they connect. There’re lotta nice beaches between both cities begging to be developed. Some might want to keep things as is, entertainment for us tourist. They want the quaint little towns with the happy little peasants riding their happy little burros. You think they’re happy? HELL NOOOOOOOO!!!!! neither them or the burros are happy!
Listen, those poor bastards want what we have, cars, electricity and for those that want to keep them like that, a message from them to you “FUCKKKKK YOUUUUUUU!!!! you come and try living with out electricity and riding a donkey for the rest of your life!”
Ok modefoque how do you know how they feel? I used to ride a freaking donkey and live with no electricity, I guess what? I was miserable, we were ALL miserable but cope as much as we could and when it got real bad, we got drunk!

I'll get there, when I get there!

To Agucho and then Panaca Are you serious!!? Medellin moore insecure than Cali! Hey man its obvious that you havent been in Medellin for a loooong time. Medellin is ten times more secure than Cali who is the most violent city in Colombia at the moment. I know what I am talking about because I live in Medellin.

Regarding Panaca, go for it my friend. There are a lot of americans here starting their own business earning like 3 000 US a month and with that kind of money you live like a fucking king down here.

I myself am swedish having my own business here and its going great!!
In fact I have a higher standard of life here than back home in Sweden. And the girls, Jesus Christ and swear to you apart from the swedish blond bikini team this city has got the most beautiful women on earth!!!

Here's the main deal: The people who are in Colombia are dying to come here, and those who are here (u.s) can't wait to get back to Colombia. Without a doubt Colombia's a great place to be, im going to visit in about 8 weeks, to be there in December, which by the way is the best of time year there as you all probably know and agree. The deal with Colombia: if you have money, great, if not stay where you are. I mean, its completely different to go there on vacation as opposed to living there, just like anywhere. Medellin in particular is what I like to refer to as the best place on earth, especially in comparison to many places in the U.S. Oh and as for the job deal, I hear its very very hard to find jobs in Colombia, my best advice for you would be plan and research. Have your family down there help you find a job, before you go, have everything planned before you go. Colombia's a great place, so if you find a job and continue making money (obviously not as much as your making in New York) then i'd say to go for it. Money to some people is everything, to others its not. If your looking to be middle class, however VERY HAPPY, then yes, do it. :)

Still not sure I've been chatting with several women online from Medelln because I'd like to get to know someone so that the next time I go there I'll have someone to meet up with and date. When I tell them that I'd like to live in Medellin they are pretty surprised to hear that. They tell me it's very rare for an American to move to Medellin. They also tell me that getting a job in Medellin is so difficult that four year degrees or more cannot get jobs. You need to have connections with someone in order to land a decent job. They tell me to stay in New York where the pay is much better. On the other hand, I just like the atmosphere in Colombia better, I like the people, scenery, everything! Even though the job market is very bad and there is a civil war, I see the people from Medellin happier than New Yorkers; they are much friendlier and warmer. So I'm still not sure what to do with my future.

Likewise It Is Difficult even for A Returning Colombian Citizen to find work in Colombia as a Teacher/Nurse friend of mine found out, Born and raised in Bogota and trained in a Bogota University as a Teacher(degreed), she later immigrated to Miami and switched to Nursing, graduating form the U of Miami as an RN(BSN)She speaks and writes flawless English and Spanish, was unable to revalidate her USA RN coursework in Bogota.

Open door policy????
Dude, YOU try immigrating here. If you were on the outside you'd probably NEVER get in these days!

One of the reasons people are starting to hit UK France and Spain in droves is precisely because the US ain't letting people in anymore

===================================================================

If you have a Profession like that of a Nurse AND Speak English at the Technical Level, your chances are very good of receiving a work (H type Visa)to the USA. Nurse Recruiters have traveled to Colombia the last couple of years just for this recruiting reason. Most Nurses are turned away due to Langauge skills so anyone desiring this type of visa needs to perfect their Technical English first and think about the Work Visa Later,,,If you don't have such a skill, chances are not good as they have a lot of Nonskilled immigrants already with a langauge barrier. . This is also true for Canada, Nurses also immigrate there without a problem, US Nurses have Absolutely No problem transferring to Canada for work. *******Conversely this is also true for a US Nurse(say colombian born, dual us/col citizenship by btw) who wanted to transfer to Colombia to work but for other reasons, even if she/he speaks/writes perfect Spanish--there is a HUGE Paperwork Barrier, as a friend of mine from Bogota recently attempted to do this but it was un-attenable so she chucked the idea***********,,,,

Medellin is a great city. Colombia´s most progressive I´m in the long term process of developing a Portal for Medellin. It´s a not for profit site, so don´t jump on me for trying to capitalize on my love for the city.

I have a small apartment in Laguito and am looking for a small apartment in Medellin.....two cities, the best of both worlds!

Currently the website is only in English with perhaps 300 pages (if printed) and nearly 800 fotos...ALL ABOUT MEDELLIN.

Please, if you will, offer me some constructive tips on how to improve the mix of info.
