I am thinking of moving to colombia and want to know how hard is it to find a job.I speak little spanish but my wife is from bogota .Is there an american company there that is willing to hire a hard working sales oriented gringo???I am also good at construction and I owned a cycle shop at one time so am handy with cycles (bicycle) and I have a complete set of tools for a shop.I know this is crazy but I fell in love with colombia and its people.

Chances of you landing a sales job are slim to none if your Spanish isn't fluent. Even if your Spanish is fluent, you would have a tough time. If you work for an American company in Sales, maybe you can get a transfer to Colombia.

My friend worked for a market data provider in Sales and put in for a transfer to Bogota and got it. He took a 35% pay cut, but it was worth it for him to be able to live in Colombia closer to his family. Good luck.

You are an American right? Well, do not worry friend, if the Congress ever passes the free trade agreement Colombia will be begging for Americans like you to just come on down. NO Spanish needed! They will provide you with education for your kids and health care and bank loans to buy a house. The Colombian government will provide you with SBA loans to open a business. If the local Colombians are denied why you the foreigner gets a break then too bad right?

This is exactly what the ILLEGAL immigrants are getting as they cross our US border. Food stamps too! Everybody welcome in the Democratic world of Obama and McCain is in Colombia to push this free trade it is soooo goood for America and Americans like you!!

Yes, I am being totally sarcastic!

What does your wife do to make money in Colombia?

Most in this forum get stuck teaching English. There are jobs at the US Embassy and they say a gringo like you would be considered but I think that is a long shot.

If you worked for IBM and had some computer skills maybe you could be sent there?

I have always found it amazing and annoying that an American who wants to go south can find so little while they, the illegals, (and legals), come north and find lots of opportunity. (Not always easy but they get help from government sources we gringos do not get!). Then there are those who work for a multi-national company who get sent to Colombia and could not even find it on a map before going! Fate!

This is why I think these free trade agreements are garbage. A few benefit and the majority?

I wish you luck on your job quest in Bogota. Most Latins always seem to want to open a business. Don't be the empleado be the boss! There is the power and the wealth!

sanandressi, so do you think the undocumented immigrants give nothing to the country? did you know most of them pay all their taxes, take the jobs many American won't take like farming the food you eat everyday, cleaning your streets, or building the house you live in and keep your grocery shopping prices under control? And by the way, what type of health care do they even get?

here in cali teaching english is realy the only option, however if your spanish is good cali and the valle del cauca is massive regards bicycle sports, maybe you could apply at one of the many very good bike shops and then get involved with a cycling group all of which are a very high standard

his own bike shop...you guys are crazy...do you know he's going to compete with the same of bike shops who are happy to work the business at cost...just to pay for the rent and food for the family table...if that makes you happy go for it...but don’t except a business in Colombia which will make you money to buy a house in strato 6
