Thinking About Moving To Medellin!

I'm in the process of making a trip to Medellin in July for 3 weeks, which I'm looking forward to another great vacation in Medellin. This will be my second visit to Medellin, and I'm looking forward to another wonderful trip. I have heard so many good things about Medellin, as well as friends that I have spoken with about Medellin. The last time I was there I had the best time ever, the only thing I hated was that I didn't know much Spanish, but on that same note I got by. I ran into so many wonderful, caring, loving, beautiful people who was willing to help me out, weather it was in a store trying to buy something or trying to find my way around town. What can I say about the beautiful ladies there other then stunning, most of all breath taking. I'm serious thinking about leaving Los Angeles, Ca. Don't get me wrong, Los Angeles is a wonderful place to live. I think it just time for me to make a move. I know things will be hard for me at first especially without knowing much Spanish.

By being an African American young man who spoke little Spanish, I kinda stood out like a sort thumb, but that didn't stop me from having a good time. I met so many nice people. I love it so much the last time I was here that I can't wait to get back. I'm the type of young man who every once in awhile go out and have a good time weather having a nice dinner and taking in a good movie, maybe take in a club every once in a while.I think my biggest concern would be finding work. I guest working at UPS I could always transfer, and for as my acting career who knows.

I really wouldn't have to work for awhile if I didn't want too..I'm pretty much set for about 3 to 4 years without having to work. I really would like to get everyone opinion about moving to Medellin if you were in my shoes.

I would continue in your career in America rather than losing 3 to 4 years of savings and career growth. Make the time for frequent vacations to Colombia. And you can learn Spanish in Los Angeles at the local community college in the meantime (and immerse yourself during your trips). I doubt there are decent work opportunities for you in Colombia, and especially without good Spanish. Although you may want to look at the opportunities within UPS, they probably pay Colombian wages in Colombia.

I am an early retiree and I am so happy that I did not forsake my career too early, as much as I wanted to. I took the time for an international vacation each year, and already spoke decent, but not fluent, Spanish before I retired (1 of 2 languages I have learned as an adult).

One "in between" strategy would be to come to Medellin for a few months in between jobs. Another possibility is a leave of absence from your current job, say 3 months. You will have a better idea after this upcoming 3 week vacation. Have a great time!

I think if you weren't working you would need to find something pretty interesting to fill your time... volunteering, studying etc.. or otherwise you would get bored pretty quick.... visiting is much different than living here, but if you have the money you will be able to get away a bit as least

always avoiding white picket fences

Thanks for the all the good advice guys, it was very helpful. I think once I come back from this trip, I'm going to sign up at one of the community college here in Los Angeles, to get me on the right track for as learning Spanish. You can rest for sure before I make this big move, I'm going to give it a lots of thoughts. Once I make this trip in July, I have 3 more week coming up around Nov. or Dec. so I'm to catch another flight back to Medellin, this time I'm going to check around some of the different city that I think might be good for me to live in. Right now I'm thinking about living in El Poblado. I think the last time I were there I stay at the Hotel Casa Victoria. I love the area. I'm not sure if I have the name correct but I think it was call the Oviedo Mall. What a beautiful mall with some great store, especially the food cart.
I love the view over looking the city. I'm sure there are other nice area, around Medellin, it would be great if you'll could give me some name or location of the different area that I might need to check out. A friend of mind was tell me about an area that was located around the Medellin Executive Suite Hotel..I think it was Zona Rosa. Is this a decent area to check out? Before I forget I don't want to leave the gym part out..what about a decent gym, it don't have to be one of the top of the line, just enough for me to get me a good work out for a couple of hours and call it a day.

For what it's worth, my opinion is you should spend an extended vacation in Colombia. Learn more about Colombia and her people. Forget abut those introduction agencies.

Another thought is you should make an effort visiting other parts of the country because of the great diversity. Each area offers something different and exciting. I will wager now you will find someplace more appealing.

Just as you would in LA, pay attention to your surroundings and listen to the advice of your new friends as it applies to safety.

Thanks Aztec! I'll take your opinion to heart as well as all the good advice I have gotten from other. I guest about awhile back I had the pleasure of visiting Bogota, Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. All of them have there good and bad point, but I think for the most part tend to come full circle back to Medellin. I'm sure it has it bad point as well. Thanks for the good info..if there anything else you think I should know feel free to drop me a note, could never have to much of good advice.

Black Thunder !

My advice is totally opposed to Aztec ! If you want to move to Medellin you have to go there directly and do NOT act like a tourst (sightseeing, etc.) but live like a local. Do NOT have too many gringo friends because , if you are with them ALL the time, you will NOT learn spanish but you will keep speak in english !

Go with introduction agencies, you will never know ! We can go to check them out together ! :)

I definitely see were you coming from Zoltar. When people come up to me here in Los Angeles, and tell me that they are looking to move here. I tell them the same thing. You can't come here acting and looking like a tourist..even worst taking pictures of everything you see in sight. Just do your best to fix in as a local. You can rest for sure there will be no gringo around me to hold me back from doing what I need to do to make it work there, and that include learning spanish.

You of course can do what ever you desire but don't miss out on exploring the Country of Colombia. That city does not represent all that is great about the country.

Aztec!
You are totally correct! I think anyone who visit Colombia, should try and visit as much of this country side as possible. I'll be the first to take my own advice, which I'm in the process of doing that. For the pass couple of years, I took the time to visit one of the most beautiful country ever, know what have been said in the pass weather it was good or bad. I had the pleasure of visiting Bogota, Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta so far. I'm looking to visit more as time permit itself. I think when a person decide to move to another country he or she should do there home work per say about that country that they are thinking about moving to. I think one way is getting to know the people in that country, learning there language, don't take anything for granted, what I might do in the States, it might not be aloud there and etc..I think you get my point. When it's all said and done, Medellin will be the place for me.
