Things I've learned on PBH the last few days

Let's see...most Colombian men are whore-mongers and drunks, and 19 out of 20 Colombian girls have novios and are in committed relationships, however, they cheat on these guys in order to find something better.

I just want to say how educational this forum is, and how much I learn here about Colombia, it's culture, and it's people...

And just think, with all of my experience in Colombia, the only thing of value that I've been able to contribute is where the name Chipichape came from...choo-choo!!

Green Day, In these past few days I have learned that Colombian Blackhawk helicopters exist.

And I contributed a list of Colombian bookstores and then I learned some hot Colombian women never frequent these bookstores. My experience is that some hot Colombian women do frequently visit Colombian bookstores, and I always went to the national FERIA INTERNACIONAL DEL LIBRO in Bogota. DON'T MISS IT! Lots of hot brains from all over the world!

I also learned some new Colombian jokes and contributed them to the jokes thread.

I learned about the meaning of the word "botica" and learned that SandraMorena80 is a damn good translator.

And I learned that the "Ley 100" has not been the greatest development when it comes to control of tuberculosis in Colombia according to a University of Antioquia study.

I've learned lots of other things from Elmo, GringoinBogota, Nato, Mr. Hollywood, Sr. Tertius and DW and others and I appreciate their contributions. I miss G5's contributions even though I rarely agree with him.

And I confirmed that the implacable biological drive to procreation leads to a lot of talk about man-woman relationships, as you noted in this thread.

heh platano...i got a nice pm from gomez, but other than that, i havent' heard a peep. nice guy, tough to agree with...especially for an old hard-head like me.

i learned someting recently...not on PBH, but it was really wierd. they cut the hearts out of the dead popes and 'store' them in a cathedral in rome. out of the 265 popes, close to 200 of the hearts are in this other church. wierd enough? talk about necromancy..i wonder if they visited this diabolicism on pope john paul II? has his heart been cut out? or is this to come? is this what the princes of the church do at night when the lights are out?

maybe that's why he wanted to be buried in the ground, not in a crypt. hoping to keep the necromancers at bay.

i want to write to the vatican to see if i can get a straight answer on this. who do i write to, mortician services at vatican city? any ideas (serious ones)?

Green, and what is wrong with appreciating the beauty in a whore while drunk outta your mind? Before I got married my weekend plans in Barranqulla were always the same. Start the night off at “La Troja” lots of dancing and booze. Around 3 am stumble across the street passed a group of Uzi machinegun carrying cops and soldiers to a place called “la casita” a whore house. There, you pick the broad you wanted, dance, drink while watching hard core sex tapes playing from many TV hanging from the ceiling. I think the idea is to get you as excited as possible and for hard core corronchos, bestiality tapes are played in the corner of the bar. The idea is to keep those sick bastards outta sight.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Colombia, pais del sagrado corazón... Vatican, country of preserved hearts....

I am checking my email everyday and haven't gotten a response from the Pope about why God allows the FARC gas cylinders to kill innocent children in Colombia. And God has not answered my prayers to have all the people FARC has kidnapped released. So neither God, nor God's representative on Earth are answering.

Sounds like cutting out the heart is probably something they are not going to comment on either. Let me know if you get any answer. Give it a try at benedictxvi at vatican.va

I'm finding out more about Colombia reading the political forum and more about Colombians reading the Spanish language forum; more about gringos here.

In the friendy forum I learn how unfriendly people can be and try to ignore most considering myself ... not learning hardly anything new about Colombia here, aside from an occasional gem.

Kat1, you forgot Platano, or was that intentional? Plátano suffers from several mental illnesses: dissociated personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder with his damn bookstores, and now paranoia because he thinks you have left him out on purpose.

From his photo he used to be cute. Now he's a basket case! The guerrillas couldn't deal with him and released him "por ser cansón"; Platano probably kept telling them about bookstores!

Platano one of the best places to buy books is on the Internet, but can you find the Internet in books, of course you can. Ying and yang or is it yang and ying? I am an avid book collector I have perhaps 3000 books dating back to the late 1600s and agree the sensory stimuli offered by books cannot be found on the Internet.

Everyone cannot afford books, for many they are expensive. In Iraq for example books used to be inexpensive, then the Americans put an embargo on books among other things, then a single book would cost more than a teacher's monthly salary. A CD of a book can be made very cheaply provided there are PCs available, another problem for third world nations. I believe Bogotá is rapidly increasing the availability of access to both books and PCs and currently Bogota's libraries are the busiest in the world.

If books weren't so darn heavy I would load up my suitcases with books, as it was when I went to the UK I shipped back 45 books that wouldn't fit in my cases even after I threw much of my wardrobe away. My wife wouldn't let me jettison any of her shoes to make room. Women!

platano says on Apr 28, 2005, 21:04:

Mario, I recommend that you book your hotel..... using the surface web. As I said before I like to arrive and find a hotel in the course of exploring. I will sometimes stop in several hotels, visit with the staff, get a feel for the vibe, find out if there are any bargains, check out several rooms, smell the place, smile at the people, etc. Those are things that pictures on the surface web will not allow me to do. The internet is deficient. Plus I get the most up-to-date and accurate information by visiting with people directly, many of whom I meet in bookstores.

I can arrive at a plaza (for example Caicedo in Cali with the Libreria Nacional nearby) and check out several hotels in short order (hotels not found on the surface web) and look at rooms and make a decision based on accurate, up-to-the-second data.

But in your case I recommend the surface web because you want everything arranged before you leave for Colombia, even though the information is limited using the web (many hotels in Colombia have no web presence at all), and even though the information may not be as up-to-date or accurate on the web as in person. As you wisely said, to each his own.

Have a great time in Bogotá!

kernow62, Thanks for the affirmation of books and libraries in Colombia. It is something I had not seen discussed much on PBH. But recently Mario has sent several messages also reaffirming my message almost verbatim. As more people begin to discuss bookstore and their importance on PBH, I will not have to. I hope people will start mentioning the kinds of bookstores and libraries nearby as they discuss hotels, bars, dance places, etc.

Got to agree with you about the texture and smell of books! Nice to know you are a true bibliophile.

Lionheart says on Apr 28, 2005, 22:32:

I recommend shoe stores Shoes are much more fashionable than books. Women have a shoe fetish. Only book worms have a book fetish. Buy your lady shoes and you will receive thanks, buy her a book and it's to the dog house with your books ... aside from the Kamasutra maybe. Good Colombian shoes are a match for Italian shoes. As a man you look stylish and you can outrun your kidnappers, who are too poor to buy decent shoes. And the smell of a shoe store beats that of a book store hands down ...

platano says on Apr 29, 2005, 06:43:

You are quite right, Lionheart and in addition..... Colombia has a whole industry dedicated to shoes, run by independent business people, which is distributed throughout the country in the smallest of villages. Here is a shoe story for you:

Once in the deepest part of Antioquia in a very small village I arrived at the plaza and a child asked if I wanted my shoes shined. In Medellin they charged me 30 pesos so I asked him how much. He replied 10 pesos. So much cheaper I thought, so I said OK. He was shining, then dipping into his polish tin, then shining, then dipping into his polish tin. This went on for a long time, much longer than the usual shine in Medellin.

After what seemed an inordinate amount of time he finally looked at me and said: "OK, I have put on five layers at 10 pesos per layer, do you want me to continue?"

I laughed, paid him the 50 pesos, thanked him, and continued on my way, amazed at the ingenuity of the PAISAS! Echados pa' lante! The kid probably owns a shoe store by now.
