Things for Colombians to do in london

Hi, my name is Diana, and a guy I'm seeing from Colombia would like me to take him to london. He has seen the usual tourist attractions already, and since he has not been back home for about 4 years I would like to surprise him and take him somewhere cool. We are staying from monday to wednesday, and I would really appreciate if anyone knows of anywhere I could take him. I've heard about La Bodeguita and we will pay that a visit, but not for too long because I don't particularly love hanging around in Elephant and Castle!! We both love to salsa and merengue too, so if anyone knows of any good salsa clubs it would be so helpful, I'm really stuck!
Thanks guys!

this is a job for Quindioman, where is he when you need him.

fortunately I live away from London, so I just know the tourist atractions there, I have been in a salsa club there but was ages ago, and I've been once in elephant and castle just to get Colombian product.

You could take him to the IMAX cinema the 3D ones, i think it's cool.

I recommend a trip to London Heathrow Airport; buy a ticket on the next plane to NYC, better yet, for this time of the year go directly to sunny Miami.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Hmm there is a salsa night at a club in leicester sq. Youll have to find out with those guys who sell the tickets, I wasnt particularly thrilled but im certain its waaay better than anything Elephant and Castle, ive only been there to go to the MoS...
My favorite things to do in London are pretty much touristy, shopping around canary wharf (there is a place at cabot sq with the best bagels ever!!), going for drinks around Greenwich village Theatre.
There are plenty of things going on at the south bank, I am not sure right now as it is so cold, but I am sur ethere must be something, also try concerts, check out the ticketmaster website and see whats on.
Good luck

Just a thought... but why take him all the way to London and show him Salsa clubs? Seems a bit like me going all the way to Colombia to hang out with gringos in gringo bars.

London If you go to London why do Colombian things.?.

I would get a Tube pass for London and see some of the things that you missed first time around , For me London is the best city in the World.

Here is my personal list,
Covent Garden , Oxford / Regent St , Hamleys , Harrods , Thames Boat ride , Bus ride , Science Museum , Natural History Museum. This should be a very interesting 3 days and very bust too.

I would strongly suggest you try the Indian cuisine when there its great , Chicken Tikka , Tandoori , Nan and Curries , also try the Turkish / Greek donner Kebabs and offcourse Fish and Chips.

If you need anymore info please PM me.

No so much I love London I just lived there for 25 years , I actually Love Bogota and would quite happily move there if the terms were right.

But London has as much or more on offer then any of the other Major world cities , NYC , Paris , Tokoyo , Rome etc etc.

Will someone please tell me ..... What the hell is "Elephant" and "Castle"? Elephants don't live in Castles....or do they?

See, while I like to enlighten people as to things that I do know. I am not afraid to ask questions about things I know nothing about....like elephants and castles in relation to people seeking tourist info in London.

Who ever heard of Pink Elephants??? I knew there had to be a reason why I was not too interested in going to London. Hell, of all the things to brag about....a castle with pink elephants. So now people get to choose between Big Ben, and Pink Elephants. Hmmm

Well,......whatever it takes I guess people don't go for the ussual tourist traps anymore. It takes something strange and out of the ordinary to lure people.

I sure hope that something like this does not happen here in Chicago.

Tuesday "Salsa" nights at Sound in Leicester Sq. Hi Diana,
The club cereal killer mentions, is called Sound, it runs a salsa night every tuesday. The club is situated directly in front of Macdonalds, or just ask anyone around where Sound is. they should let you know.

I recomend taking him to eat at a Colombian restaurant, "La Mazorca" in Brixton, is my recomendation. Although the dinning experience there is probably best during weekends. After that the "Bodeguita" is also a well known Colombian restaurant.

Regarding Elephant & castle, I recomend giving that a miss alltogether, unless you are going to buy some Colombian Products. Too many "desechables" hang around there, especially during the week.

Apart from that in terms of showing him home, theres not much else to do during the week.

I recomend taking him site seeing, you cant beat London for that!

quindioman says on Jan 30, 2006, 06:55:

hello guys long time no "see", thanks to katica1 and fugdis for the namecheck.
OK Diana you've had some responses to your request. Reading through your post again its sounds like you want to party.
Somewhere cool...hmmm....cereal killer and gabsi both mentioned Sound in Leicester Square...I would have to agree with them, here's the lowdown:
Mondays: EL MAS! Latino 5pm-2am they have Salsa classes running from 7:00pm-9:30pm thereafter
Free before 9pm £4 before 11pm and then £5 afterwards
Tuesdays: Latino 5pm-2am Classes run form 7pm-9pm very similar to Monday nights but they throw a mix of RnB, Latin Pop and some Merengue if you lucky
Same entrance fees as Monday....these are the only 2 nights you should head to Sound if you want to dance salsa.

Bar Rumba: recently revamped on 36 Shaftesbury Avenue (round the corner from Sound)Barrio Latino on Tuesdays - expect Salsa, Merengue and a huge serving of Reggaeton as well. 9pm-3am
£4 before 11pm £5 thereafter

Salsa: on 96 Charing Cross Road Plays Latin music pretty much every day of the week open 5:30pm-2am.

Now La Bodeguita on Elephant & Castle is more of a restaurant, although it doubles up as a sort of club on Saturdays but by all means pass by and have a bandeja paisa or whatever Colombian dish tickles your fancy.....you might also want to consider La Mazorca as gabsy mentioned on 384 Brixton Road.

This week would be a good time to walk around the west end (which you would be doing if you head to any of the clubs that have been mentioned) Chinatown gleams of reds and golds as they have seen in the year of the Dog (happy New Chinese year by the way)...sounds like you're going to dance a lot of calories off so it might be a good idea to try some Dim Sum in one of the many Chinese restaurants that litter the west end.
Cereal killer also mentioned the South Bank.....I can't think of too many more romantic things to do than a stroll along the South Bank on an early evening as the Thames radiates with the plethora of lights that shine upon its banks.....you may want to stop for an hour inside the National Theatre for a glass of wine and listen to the resident pianist....very sophisticated and rather cool methinks Another idea (alas it's too late) would have been to take him ice skating in Somerset House and enjoy some mulled wine while you are at it...maybe next year huh? Ministry of Salsa/Chaney I believe is only open on Saturdays and it's open until 6am.....the main difference between Ministry of Sslsa/Chaney, La Bodeguita and the aforementioned clubs is that MoS/Chaney and La Bodeguita have an almost exclusive Colombian and some Ecuadorian patrons whilst the West End Clubs are frequented by all races and creeds....enjoy!
ps: I have posted some pics of La Bodeguita and Chaney

Dat Modefoque...I wonder what you would do if you won a trip to England? I got a feeling you'd sell that tickete jijijiji!

Gomezman:/...not only are there pink Elephants, those modefoques are so nimble they give those Eastern European and Chinese gymnasts a run for their money.

Quindio, damn right I will sell my free ticket to London, I’ll probably take that money and gotto Mexico again. Listen, I look too much like a damn Hindu and the last thing they wanna see in London is another Indian modefouque. With my luck I’ll have hooligans and skin heads chasing me near Buckingham palace, just imagine me trying to climb over that gate to seek help from the queen, now I got the royal guards, hooligan, skin heads, James Bond and Austin Powers, chasing my old ass around.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Maritza There's so much to do in London that it's difficult to list here, but if you want to try Indian cuisine. Then head to Brick Lane in Shoreditch. It's a 10 minute walk from Liverpool Street train station and is in the heart of the Bangladeshi community. Loads of great Indian restaurants and plenty of decent bars as well. Also Shoreditch, Old Street/Hoxton is nearby, where there are plenty of great bars/clubs.

enjoy.
