They must have a small pool of Colombian actors too choose from!

It seems to me that every single novela or movie seem to use the same actors over and over again.. Anybody else notice this practice, I wonder why? They must have a monopoly on the Colombian SAG or something.

It sounds like the studio system in the US iun the 50´s when the actors were exclusivley contracted to a studio and couldn't work for anyone else, In Colombia it's the tv stations.

It is funny though watching an actor playing a tough character in a telenovela and then the following week he's a wimp!! One guy I remember played a narco in El Cartel and was then a celador in Vecinos!! and another of the narcos in El Cartel played a gay neighbour in Aqui no hay quien viva!!

you're absolutely right, sapo............it's money, politics and family. with exception of character parts and extras, all estrellas come from money. the status quo is alive and well in beloved colombia.

There are schools/colleges of acting here; one at least in Bogota.
Perhaps the same actors are used because the majority of the good ones would not want to be associated with such poor quality and appearing could damage their long-term careers. Perhaps the best keep to the theatre here until such time as they are noticed by somebody who does matter. Then the move abroad to improve their careers.

Douglas
How did you know? Thanks for asking. 2 weeks ago, mega nosebleed losing more than 2 pints in 24 hours. Also high blood pressure.
On the mend now thanks, due to wifey suddenly changing to super-nurse, good care at Las Clinicas Americas, lots of rest and even more high-iron food. At least now my colour implies that I will survive at least another week, or perhaps 30 years.
Still weak and need to sit a lot, which I am not used to, so I have spent a little more time on this site than is usual. Have also started composing something which incorporates a lot of my rock and roll experiences intertwined with my life. Just something which will turn out to be "from me to me", because it could turn out crap, with a copy to family members and friends at some stage-mein kampf rock n rock style!
How is your lot Douglas?
Sorry, a bit off topic to say the least and I did not have to try hard to act out this role. A good audition for Frankenstein last week perhaps!

I hear it's the same for writers - a very closed circle. I have seen some "acting schools" in Colombia and the US - don't amount to much. One thing I did notice in Colombia though is that most people think that only good-looking people can be actors (I guess because so much novela) whereas it isn't so much the case in the states.

there are a couple of mexican actors that quite often are in two different novelas playing at the same time. it's not who you know....it's how you know them......sleep with the producer stories, all of em.

a friend of our's was the villan in one of colombia's classics, the casa de los dos palmas....cristobal erizuris...that was twenty years ago. he still works for caracol (or the last i heard he did) in bogota. cool guy. 'dos palmas' was filmed in sante fe de antioquia.

ken....well, not liking to be a snitch....it was azunoman. he blew your cover. anyway, sure glad you didn't bleed to death, that isn't a good story line for a book...'the man who bled to death'...got no bite in it. it has to be something like...oh, just use your imagination....'i got shot while playing zepplin while trying to excape the gulag' see? doesn't that have a bit more 'kick' to it? sure it does. so be careful what info you let leak out. look at m. jackson....the more we hear and the farther the inquiry goes it's looking more like involuntary suicide. pity.

well, friend, you're up and about and i guess we can continue putting up with you. if they can put up with me, they can handle rabid dogs.

peace, douglas

who nose?
And azu letting the cat out of the bag: that is cool!
As for putting up with me and my paranoias, I will soon be retreating a bit from here. Once the full blood complement is available to me again and I can think better, ie more oxygen in the cranium zone, my energies are going into my past and progressing with this "book" I was mentioning.
Not Rabid but just Mad Dog por fa; as in Mad Dogs and Englishmen (Joe Cocker) And he is well nuts although he can do one thing that I cannot; sing!

Mi amigo actor Juan Carlos from Sumas y Restas and Ramon Marlunda from Apocalípsur along with a group of friends hang out drinking beers and guaro at a corner store in Medellin. They would not let me pay for a single drink even though I drank more than anyone else, as always.

I would disagree with the statement that only good looking actors get work in movies which is not to say the same for novelas.

It,s quite common in a lot of countries for entertainers to have links with mafiosos, that,s how they get their break.Remember a young Frank Sinatra going for audition with the Tommy Dorsey band, the Mob said to Tommy "Use him".Same applies to actors in the East Enders series in UK.This must happen in Colombia and stops any new talent breaking thru.

Yes! I remember. I think one of the Krays managed a British rock band too but I cannot remember who it was.
Horrible thought but my mum's cousin married into that family; that cousin was immediately "sent to Coventry" by the rest of the family. I often used to have a pint with some friends in the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel; the scene of one of the Kray's more notorious murders. At times, there appeared to be gangster-types in there so one did not talk too loudly about its past.

I lived in the East End for over 20 years over 2 eras of my life. "The East Is The Beast" as Jim Morrison would have sung to complement "The West Is The Best".
As for East London nightclubs, I do not ever recall going to one because I hate club music. Used to frequent a lot of the pubs though and some definitely had the "feel" of an underworld presence, particularly in Whitechapel and Hackney areas. Keep your nose clean, no bothers!

back to the actors/actresses....ever notice how the gals in the novelas that you see in one novela after another, quickly go down hill and lose that 'bright blossom' look. needing more makeup and false breasts and more to keep up the 'look'? remember, it ain't the age, it's the milage, and the folks that run the show, eat these folks up and spit them out. they just use them up. pity.

I think you see the Mexican actors and actresses playing the roles over and over more so than the Colombians but whatever. The Mexican actors are more European white than the average mestizo Mexicano.

All of my fond old memories of London are being taken away. My grandfather will turn in his grave if you carry on!
Any more good news? Or are you just trying to stop me from going to London altogether on my next UK trip?
I suppose Petticoat Lane, Brick Lane and Camden markets have totally disappeared too! I know Brick Lane has changed/been trendied up and Camden is probably still recovering from that fire!

Blimey, what is going on?
T and Country a preferred venue for bigger bands; good atmosphere-probably the Irish influence!
I remember those pubs and have drunk in them all at some stage. Do you hang out around those parts?
What about the pubs of Putney and Fulham; any music places left?
I feel depressed! Lots of good memories being eroded away! Not palaces by any means but each had a unique atmosphere at a certain time.
