actually this happened a stone´s throw from UTC´s old digs. and? Jesus, I havent been in Kansas or the USA in amost 5 years. I have been in Belen, Medellin and would dare to say I have ventured deeper into the non strata 5 or above society more than most and the reality check is I am getting more unnerved as things have gotten a lot hotter over the last month in Belen. Where we would have a hit in Belen every 6 months or so (usually in Violetas or Rincon way in the back like behind bus depots late at night), now it is like every 6 days and it is starting to hit closer to major arteries like the 76 or la 80 and now with brashness to do it in front of like 50 witnesses at the entrance of a busy supermarket during lunch hour. I feel safe because these hits are usually meant for someone for a reason, but I dont want to be an innocent casualty either. Sorry I wasnt here for the 80s to early 90s glory so i could have had a reality check but I was only 14 or so then back in Kansas collecting baseball cards.

The poster wrote this for a reason and your comment was not necessary; just ignore it if you do not want to make at least a constructive comment or show a bit of sympathy for the victim.
One can be more careful or alert to situations if one remains aware, improves ones chances anyway. I know that nobody is totally immune though.

No. No contract killings in my quaint, little New England town last week.

But, last fall, the body of a 16 year old student was found shot and partially burned in a pit in the woods.
It turns out he was one of the largest drug dealers in the area, and the murderers were his 20 year old cousin and 13 year old brother. Shit happens everywhere.

When I am in Colombia I take certain measures to lower the probability of my becoming a crime victim.
I'm not going to stop traveling there.

Bryon and UTC

Very often the response is " shit happens everywhere "..............The reason for this is because that is exactly the way soceity is. I don't quite understand why you lads keep harping on and on and on about violence in Colombia, as if it is something new.

Now, you even attempt to silence balanced comment by wondering why people compare the violence in Colombia to elsewhere. It is compared, because comparisons are relevent. We all read and hear about violence every day of the week. Do I think we should not hear about it in Colombia. Hell no. Posts like this, serve to remind us that everyone should take care. Posts like this, remind us that as we are in a foreign country, we stand out a little bit differently.

For that reason we should always be aware of our surroundings. But don't lose sight of the reality. The reason we draw comparisons, is because we all know too well the levels of violence in the US. So, there is no need to get bent out of shape about the type of violence in Colombia. It really is no different to anywhere else, in so many ways. Look for trouble and you will find it, be it in the US or in Colombia. Your feeble attempt to quell some folks pointing out some realism is laughable.

It is sad to hear of any loss of life. The guy outside the supermarket ! But it doesn't really touch us.

A man was shot and killed outside the House of Blues in Chicago on Saturday morning. Right outside, in a packed street.
More than 3 dozen schoolkids in the Chicago public school system have been murdered since January. 3 fookin dozen schoolkids. There IS shit everywhere..............get over it. For the avarage " Joe soap ", Colombia may very well be safer than anywhere else.

This is how you must try to live in Colombia. None of us are immune to fear and it works its way into our lives whether we wish it or not. But that has been true all our lives I feel if we are honest and lived average lives. You get to opportunity to live your life fully today knowing there is no guarantee that tomorrow will come. For me Colombia offers a chance to grow towards that place where I can say ; today would be a good day to die.

I say this knowing I want to live another 40 years.
