ZHANG
Zhang adds some much needed zing to Medellin's fairly tame line up of Chinese restaurants.
Where others are content to make do with a tacky souvenir or wall mounted photo to claim Chinese authenticity, Zhang embraces the new China with stylish furniture, dimmed lighting and electronic music.
Indeed, offering a slightly more adventurous menu than its competitors, Zhang seems geared towards foreign taste buds and the new, more cosmopolitan, face of Medellin.
The question remains as to whether Medellin is ready for such sophistication. Set in the exclusive San Fernando Plaza, Zhang often remains mysteriously scarce of customers at weekends.
Let's hope Medellin 2.0 arrives sooner rather than later to quench the thirst of Zhang and many other new ventures like it.
ASIA
Ask any taxi driver for a good Chinese restaurant in Poblado and you willl probably be whisked to Asia.
But, despite the colourful fish tank and the sweet smell of Chinese cooking, you are unlikely to forget that you are not anywhere near the continent in the far East.
Indeed, the fish are not on the menu, but even if they were, it would do little to change the fact that it is short and uninspiring.
Furthermore, despite being very expensive, the food is just like any other Chinese restaurant in any other part of Medellin.
Luckily, you can order half portions which on their own are big enough to dismantle your hunger, or combined with each other, add some variety to the meal.
As the evening draws on, a much bigger problem becomes apparent. Not devoting all your mental resources to the food, you may begin to notice the background music which comes straight out of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Before too long, the orchestral sounds will have you scanning the dining area looking for a mouse hole or demented cat.
