The United States of Colombia was a federated republic conformed by the present countries of Colombia and Panama. It happened to the Granadina Confederation in 1863 and was replaced by the Republic of Colombia in 1886.

Now this is a long history starting from the disolution of the Gran Colombia,in 1830,and replace for the cofederacion granadina in 1858, but I haven't got much time to explain sorry, maybe somebody else do the honour.

The United States of Colombia In 1858 the country adopted the name Grenadine Confederation which was changed in 1863 to United States of Colombia by the Rionegro Constitution. The nine original states that conformed the confederation were Antioquia, Bolivar, Boyaca, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panama, Santander and Tolima, and the territories of Caqueta, San Martin, Nevada and Motilones. After several years of civil war, in 1886 the party that won the war led by Rafael Núñez proclaimed a new constitution of centralist character that abolished the United States and created the Republic of Colombia. Appreciation I think GIB you are the one that needs to start showing some appreciation to the country that is your home for the time being. If you do not, well get the hell out of here. We are Americans because we consider ourselves and that is good enough, if you do not like it, well get out and go to Europe where they call you American. Then you wonder who are the arrogant ones, this is a site about Colombia and you might as well start showing some respect for the way people of this country and the way we think. It is sickening hearing your constant bitching all day long. If you want your country to cut the aid to Colombia, well go back to your country and work on it, but the only thing your type of attitude gets your people around the world is the clapping I heard when the unfortunate events of Sept 11 took place. So if your magnanimous country is so good, what in the world are you doing in dangerous Colombia.

Gringoinbogota SUCKS big time.
It is ridiculously funny how some people think.

Colombia has had several names over the history for various reasons. One of them was La Gran Colombia that included other countries like Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. This is a long story to explain here, just read some of this info to get more eduacted and to have more solid base to argue.
-----------------------------------
The Republica de Gran Colombia was founded in 1819 when Simon Bolivar fought for the independence of Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador from the Spanish. He joined all three countries to make Gran Colombia. It had always been his goal to unite all of South America. If he had done so, today it might be one of the strongest nations in the world. Bolivar could have united Peru and other countries, but instead he hoped that they would unite on their own and make a stronger republic. On December 17, 1819, Simon Bolivar , "El Libertador", was named president of the republic and Santander as the vice president.
------------------------------------------
I was not born in this the USA, but I am as GRINGO as you, Gringoinbogota. BTW my passport doesn't say just AMERICA, it says the United Sates of America.
FYI
The name of this country is 'THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' evidently you and many more US persons overlooked the preposition 'OF', that means that it belongs to somenthing, RIGHT?
The name is NOT the 'American United States' or the 'United Sates IN America' As you know it was a too long name and the only way to make it short was to leave the last word -America-.
The American continent, is only one. If you study geography anywhere outside the USA you learn that there are 5 -FIVE- continents [America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania], not 7 the way they teach it here. Also check how may arrows are on the Olympic Games flag? FIVE, each of them represent ONE continent.
FYI Did you know Mexico IS part of North America?
Did you know that America -the continent is divided in three sections? North America, Central America and South America-
Did you know that Panama was part of Colombia until 1901?
Did you know that the USA took over Panama and invaded it to make it independent and build the Canal before then French did it?
Did you know that statistically young people in the USA are the worst students in world geography and history?
Did you know that average people in the USA think the world starts in California and ends in North Carolina?

Now talking about Anti- Americanism in Colombia! HELLO!!! Have you been to Europe lately? Please go to France, Spain, Italy and Germany especially and talk to locals and watch TV and then see the way people think and talk about our uncle's Sam's land and how it this has changed in the last four years!!!
My wife and my gringo friends love Colombia and several of them have already decided that Colombia is then place where they want to retire. They have never faced any anti-US sentiment situation anywhere In Colombia.
It all depends of the type of person you are of if you want to play the role of the arrogant ugly American cowboy type.

It is time to wake up!

Get true facts and more education please!!

Explanation This is really very simple to explain. The official title of my country is the United States of America. It is the only country with the word America in it. Therefore, we call ourselves Americans. It is not a conspiracy to denigrate the rest of the people of this hemisphere. When people of Colombia or Uruguay or whereever travel the world, do they say "Soy Americano". Hell no.

What is insulting is the campaign to deny the people of a great nation their name. When my father landed in Normandy, the French were saying Thank God the Americans are coming, not the United Statesians.

In closing, if American is not correct, what exactly do you propose we call ourselves. Estadounidense?, or would Servants of the Great Satan be better?

Personally I really don't know why Colombians would want to be called Americans anyway. Is it really something to aspire to? Don't get me wrong, the US is not a bad place and the majority of people are kind, generous people, but so are the majority of Colombians, and Colombia is a great country so just call yourself Colombian and have done with it. I am mistaken for a Yank all the time either that or Irish, it gets on my tits!

"The new geography included in its appendix Waldseemüller's large, stunning map of the world, on which the New World is boldly labeled AMERICA — in the middle of present-day Brazil. The entire New World portion of this map roughly represents South America, and when later mapmakers added North America, they retained the original name; in 1538, the great geographer Gerard Mercator gave the name America to all of the western hemisphere on his Mapamundi. Waldseemüller's 1507 map, lost to scholars until 1901 when it was found in a German castle, is now reckoned to be the first to show the name, and the earliest record of its use. "

yeah, this subject has been beat to death. a lot of people would like the U.S. to change its name to "Yankeeland" but they don't realize that Southern Americans don't consider themselves Yankees. they call us Northerners "Yankees" and themselves "Rebels". "American" seems to be working out good so why change it?

Civil War? You mean the War for Southern Independence also known as the War Between the States? Hell, I would be perfectly happy to see the USA break up into several smaller nation states.

Tinto said, perhaps unconsciously, this subject has come up about 147 times which is about the number of times the USA has intervened militarily, (invading, bombing, kidnapping, etc.) in the affairs of Americans in Central and South America, including the overthrow of democratically elected presidents. Including the Bogotazo.

"The colloquial term Yank for a U.S citizen, used in Britain and Australia, is a derivative of Yankee. In Australia, the Cockney rhyming slang term Sepo survives, derived from septic tank."

Damn those Cockneys are clever. I have never heard of Yanks being called Sepos before.

There is always something to be learned on this forum.

juanalejo says on Dec 6, 2005, 05:49:

Political Correctness I know the term political correctness and the USA do not come together, but maybe with a little bit of effort it can be done. I understand the fact that for people from the USA there is there own truth or they will bomb, kill and terrorize. But if for once in a life time they would realize that people outside their little border people are also entitled to their own truth. So when in the USA you can be called American, when in Latinamerica you can call yourself Estadounidense, or Norteamericano or Gringo if you please. Is it that difficult for an "American" to respect foreign cultures, are they not taught just a dash of decency?

utopiacowboy says on Dec 6, 2005, 05:58:

Respect? I would think respect is referring to people by the same name that they call themselves, whatever it is. A lot of people in our culture call any Latinos spics or beaners. Does that mean Colombians should allow themselves to be referred to as spics or beaners while in the US?

I you think the PBH moderators can throw me out for saying someone sucks, well let them go right ahead, that IS their job, not yours. I still think I can express my ideas the way I want. I have spent probably more time than you in this site, believe me. The fact that I am using a new nick does not mean I am brand new here, so don't lecture me on what to do or on how to say things. I have read many more f...words here and more insulting comments thatn just saying someone sucks. I am sorry, but if they SUCK, they really DO.
BTW I can assure you that I am more civil more mature and more adult than many more people here, I wish you could check out my resume.
So DO NOT jump into conlusion without knowing facts. Grow up.

The fact that U.S. Citizens call themselves the only "americans" is out of context. Europeans that colonized this region of the world referred to it as "the Americas", meaning what they considered a "new world". It consisted of North and South America. Most americans do not even know that Mexico is actually part of North America.
