It happened to the Granadina Confederation in 1863 and was replaced by the Republic of Colombia in 1886. engage brain before opening mouth 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

yacosta says on Dec 5, 2005, 06:17: The United States of Colombia In 1858 the country adopted the name Grenadine Confederation which was changed in 1863 to United States of Colombia by the Rionegro Constitution. The nine original states that conformed the confederation were Antioquia, Bolivar, Boyaca, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panama, Santander and Tolima, and the territories of Caqueta, San Martin, Nevada and Motilones. After several years of civil war, in 1886 the party that won the war led by Rafael Núñez proclaimed a new constitution of centralist character that abolished the United States and created the Republic of Colombia. juanalejo says on Dec 5, 2005, 16:40: Appreciation I think GIB you are the one that needs to start showing some appreciation to the country that is your home for the time being. If you do not, well get the hell out of here. We are Americans because we consider ourselves and that is good enough, if you do not like it, well get out and go to Europe where they call you American. Then you wonder who are the arrogant ones, this is a site about Colombia and you might as well start showing some respect for the way people of this country and the way we think. It is sickening hearing your constant bitching all day long. If you want your country to cut the aid to Colombia, well go back to your country and work on it, but the only thing your type of attitude gets your people around the world is the clapping I heard when the unfortunate events of Sept 11 took place. So if your magnanimous country is so good, what in the world are you doing in dangerous Colombia.

el norteño says on Dec 5, 2005, 17:12: Explanation This is really very simple to explain. The official title of my country is the United States of America. It is the only country with the word America in it. Therefore, we call ourselves Americans. It is not a conspiracy to denigrate the rest of the people of this hemisphere. When people of Colombia or Uruguay or whereever travel the world, do they say "Soy Americano". Hell no.

kernow62 says on Dec 5, 2005, 19:43: Personally I really don't know why Colombians would want to be called Americans anyway. Is it really something to aspire to? Don't get me wrong, the US is not a bad place and the majority of people are kind, generous people, but so are the majority of Colombians, and Colombia is a great country so just call yourself Colombian and have done with it. I am mistaken for a Yank all the time either that or Irish, it gets on my tits!

yacosta says on Dec 5, 2005, 21:21: "The new geography included in its appendix Waldseemüller's large, stunning map of the world, on which the New World is boldly labeled AMERICA — in the middle of present-day Brazil. The entire New World portion of this map roughly represents South America, and when later mapmakers added North America, they retained the original name; in 1538, the great geographer Gerard Mercator gave the name America to all of the western hemisphere on his Mapamundi. Waldseemüller's 1507 map, lost to scholars until 1901 when it was found in a German castle, is now reckoned to be the first to show the name, and the earliest record of its use. morphus says on Dec 5, 2005, 21:49: yeah, this subject has been beat to death. a lot of people would like the U.S. to change its name to "Yankeeland" but they don't realize that Southern Americans don't consider themselves Yankees. they call us Northerners "Yankees" and themselves "Rebels". "American" seems to be working out good so why change it?

utopiacowboy says on Dec 5, 2005, 22:15: Civil War? You mean the War for Southern Independence also known as the War Between the States? Hell, I would be perfectly happy to see the USA break up into several smaller nation states. Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

kernow62 says on Dec 6, 2005, 04:12: "The colloquial term Yank for a U.S citizen, used in Britain and Australia, is a derivative of Yankee. In Australia, the Cockney rhyming slang term Sepo survives, derived from septic tank."

juanalejo says on Dec 6, 2005, 05:49: Political Correctness I know the term political correctness and the USA do not come together, but maybe with a little bit of effort it can be done. I understand the fact that for people from the USA there is there own truth or they will bomb, kill and terrorize. But if for once in a life time they would realize that people outside their little border people are also entitled to their own truth. So when in the USA you can be called American, when in Latinamerica you can call yourself Estadounidense, or Norteamericano or Gringo if you please. Is it that difficult for an "American" to respect foreign cultures, are they not taught just a dash of decency?

utopiacowboy says on Dec 6, 2005, 05:58: Respect? I would think respect is referring to people by the same name that they call themselves, whatever it is. A lot of people in our culture call any Latinos spics or beaners. Does that mean Colombians should allow themselves to be referred to as spics or beaners while in the US? Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

cali373 says on Dec 12, 2005, 12:59: The fact that U.S. Citizens call themselves the only "americans" is out of context. Europeans that colonized this region of the world referred to it as "the Americas", meaning what they considered a "new world". It consisted of North and South America. Most americans do not even know that Mexico is actually part of North America. Smile if you are a thinker! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
