The two faces of Colombia.

My wife asked me something that at that moment I had no answer for. Her question was “si tu detestas tanto a los colombianos porque te encata ir a Colombia? Since I detest Colombians so much, why do I want to go there? I was stump, dumbfounded. .
Later on, a few things came to mind. The Colombia a grew up in, the poor Colombia, MY COLOMBIA and most of Colombia, estrato 1 and lower is the Colombia I loved best, even with all the poverty that came with it. One of the main reasons I keep coming back is the people! The REAL happybutpoorcolombians and what I remember from my youth. It was rumba every weekend, selling butifarra to survive, but I was happy. I had no real place to sleep, but I was happy. I started drinking at age 6 and then I was really freaking happy. Now as an old modefoque, and since my father’s relatives have now moved on to their upper Colombian lives with maids in very room, living in estrato 6 and up, I had the misfortune of hanging out with them, the likes of them or the other face of Colombia and all I have to say is one thing, I can’t stand their snobbish pretentious ass and avoid them like the plague! They could stick their Zona Rosa, Frogs Leggs, Parque Lleras up their plastic ass. A couple years ago my highfalutin cousin invited me to her grandiose Barranquilla apartment to listen to live Cuban music. I’m not talking that great music from Cuba but more like Batista pre Fidel, casino music. Piano (she has a piano), singer, guitar, maracas, etc. real boring crap. Cuban musicians perform live for ostentatious Colombians, right in their spacious fancy apartments. Now, why the f--k would I want to listen to Cuban music while my estrata 2 cousin was having a “papayera y un asao” with lots of booze and broads in one of those famous loud barrios populares de Barranquilla. The Cuban music was over at 1l pm. while we partied until the last papayera member passed out, sometime the next morning. For my highfalutin cousins, I’m un Indio comunista, malagradecido, mama burra y resentio. Resentio? I told them, “you stupid, no English speaking, third world living, polo shirt wearing (paso hambre pa compra), no visa to USA, Daewoo driving, maid abusing sonamanbiche! With your freaking Colombian profession, you still only make a fraction of what I make and ain’t got no education, take that you f---ng f--k! Now go off and f—k yourself!
Gee, I feel jolly today.

I feel your anger... Last September I returned to Colombia for the 1st time in 21 yrs, after sitting here, pretty in my gringo-persona, unable to stomach a lot of the crap that went and still goes down, not the least of which was the killings of Alonso Echandía, and the genocide of the Unión Pátriotica members...
But then, I got divorced, and like the vallenato says, "I washed my brain, and changed my life". In Sept 04 I went, and W O W ! ! I fell in love again with Colombia...me dió la chiripiorca...

hey elmo it takes one to know one! no one here can really describe the hoods in colombia like we do! unless they've lived the poor but happy life in colombia! as i said before most of the people in this forum (not talking about anyone in particular!) have colombian backgrounds but have been raised in other countries by middle / upper social class families, have no knowledge of colombia other than the main tourist attractions or festivals because at the end of the day that's all they go to colombia for is it not? whereas some people like us have grown up in the most despicable places in colombia surrounded by poverty, violence and yea happy people!! not the plasticos that we see nowadays flashing their brick-alike cell phones in their plastic surgery enhanced bodies and going to the cabalgata

Oldgringo, Tone and Miguel, all you costeña loving gringos, there’s nothing I enjoy more than my trips to Cartagena y Barranquilla during Carnaval , but I’m specially looking forward to this one cause if all goes well with my Colombian papers, I see us hanging out. Picture this, in a crowded bar with lots of señoritas around, blue passport in back pocket and those pretty green dollar bills in front, and endless supply of booze. Hey, I wont have to stick a 20 dollar bill in my forehead to attract attention cause we’ll speak English loud enough so those lovely third world broads notice us. I think we’re gonna need security to control the mob of women. We might have to service them 2 at a time, is been years but I think I could still do it.

Dwmte posted this sometime ago, and I live by it.
gurgieff, a russian thinker, died in 1949 (i think), once said, ".... within every man/woman, is a wolf and a lamb. the secret for living a 'right' life is keeping the sheep in tact, and the wolf well fed. We do this by knowing when to give the old dog a bone."

Well guys, this the time to give the old dog a bone and no better place in the world than Barrranquilla y Cartagena, where the booze is cheap and cold and the girl are hot and plentiful.

Hey, where in tarnation is Miguel?

I'll get there, when I get there!

Mrs. G, is all that and more, I could not possibly imagine anyone mas perfecta. The worlds most perfect tracero, and more important I love to see her dark side, I bet is a lotta freaking fun.

Hey yep, don't worry about a place, lots of those elitist barranquilleros leave town during Carnaval, too much noise, etc. those finicky f—ks! They go to El Rodadero or Cartagena. If I get my papers in time for Carnaval, I’m also going to need a place (don't like to stay with family, I crap and fart all day long, need privacy) but I’m not worried at all. I’m sure the fancy and moderate hotels will be booked but others should be ok, that's if you're not too fussy. I could sleep with roaches crawling in and outta my ears with no problem, shit I used to sleep with goats for a few years, have you ever smell a goats fart, remember they eat everything. let’s keep in contact.

There are plenty of places available, but you need to local to do the legwork for you.

Forget Barranquilla Plaza, Hotel del Prado, America Golf, Hotel Royale, etc. Those have long been booked up.

To add, all hotels/apartments are requiring a 50% deposit for reservations. Some only require a deposit of the 1st night.
