I have heard of similar stories before - but they never made international news of course. My friend, a Colombiano but US permanent resident, was kidnapped years ago. He apparently wasn't held too long and paid what was to him a lot of money, some $20.000 USD. After being released and doing some digging, he found out it was a cousin or two of his and their friends who set it up. They knew exactly how much money he had in his bank account in the US, info like that.

Let's just say that I wouldn't be surprised at all either if the wife was behind it. He may have been on his way out of the relationship and she panicked when the goose with golden eggs was getting away. (Just my theory...)

About her looks; lots of guys past sixty are not that picky about looks any longer. It's enough for them that the woman is not much older than their grandchildren. I've seen old Swedish dudes that travel to Thailand and bring back skinny little Thai girls that look like they were 14...not a pretty sight.
