The rules

This site brings together a large community of people with an interest in travel.

When posting, follow these simple rules:

  1. No sexist, racist or obscene language.
  2. No personal attacks.
  3. No blatant advertising.

In other words, this is not allowed:

  • racist, sexist or homophobic comments.
  • harassing or 'stalking' any other person.
  • questions about where to 'find women' or discussions about paid sex.
  • personal attacks on others.
  • personal details or private information about any other person.
  • postings made under another person's name or impersonating another person.
  • spammy commercial advertising.
  • excessively coarse language.

If you don't follow the rules your post may be deleted or your account may be deleted.

And now, for a bit more explanation:

No personal attacks.

Attacking someone's argument is accepted, even encouraged. Attacking the person who made the argument is unnecessary. We are all here to learn, and none of us can do that while we're calling each other names or questioning one another's intelligence. Read other members' arguments carefully and respond to the points they make, not to their wording or to them personally. Everyone will learn more that way.

We also don't allow attacks on groups of people (women, men, americans, colombians, ...). You can talk about groups of people, that's fine, just don't attack them.

Don't feed the trolls.

Some people just enjoy starting trouble. They'll intentionally post false or controversial material, usually worded in a provocative manner, just to get others to pay attention to them. This is known as"trolling" and is regarded by some as an art form. We disagree. We think it is dull entertainment for simple minds. We prefer to ignore the trolls until they crawl back under their bridge, and we would prefer that you do likewise.

Mulitple accounts are not allowed.

You are not allowed to have multiple usernames. It makes conversations harder to follow and undermines the trust in this community.

Keep private email private.

No matter how nasty someone gets in private, how certain you are that they sent the message privately by mistake, or how relevant you think a private message is to the rest of the list, if a message was sent privately to you, treat it as personal correspondence and keep it private. To do otherwise makes you look untrustworthy and childish. Note that this also applies to the 'personal messaging' you have here on Poorbuthappy.

If someone is harassing you off-list and refuses to stop, contact the moderators.

Be respectful of others' sensitivities and backgrounds.

There is a wide range of cultures represented on this site. What might pass for "refreshingly direct" in your hometown may be horribly rude to someone from another state or nation.

Also, try to remember that while this is mostly an English-language site, not everyone on it speaks English as their first (or even second) language. That semi-coherent typo-ridden rant may not have come from a boorish illiterate, but someone living on an island in the middle of the Pacific who speaks French, Russian, Japanese and Arabic fluently, but only just started learning English three months ago.

Do not spam.

You may provide a link to your website, if it's new to us, but don't use this site for blatant self-promotion or spammy advertising (ie. posting a link to your business again and again). It will be deleted.

Peter, I was rereading the rules, and i didn't see anything about people with multiple accounts. Does that mean your account can be removed and you can resurface into another account, almost immediately?

whats the policy on death threats with firearms using the PM function of PBH? =)

Juanes "Chau papi"
hahaha I'm sure your intentions were completely innocent in saying that. But guys don't say that to eachother unless in a close friendship that you can joke about it. I'm sure you picked it up from a female merchant in Colombia that just sold you something. Then again, you could be gay and there is nothing wrong with that.

you need to have the photo hosted on the web somewhere.

Will all work. Then you can post it using the following tag "

where the webadressofpicture is the location on the photo hosting site ie http://www.goandleaveyourmark.com/mon1.JPG

Rikito says on May 7, 2008, 08:38:

Peter,

By making the statement, "Don't feed The Trolls." You are doing two things. First you are inviting more Trolls to join becaseu they know that they will have an open forum. Second, you are driving away members who have made some valuable contributions to PBH over the years. If you want to keep a Troll then should be identified as such until they can prove that they are not. You are doing a disservice to your site by allowing this to continue.

It is not life that matters, but the journey.

kat1 (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 09:10:

Rikito as you say this is an open forum so trolls are going to be part of the daily live, mod will do the best to get rid off them bad they will keep coming back like a bad rash, now is up to you if you want to feed them or avoid them.

Vicsh. we all due respect but lately you have been following american like bad rash (my word of the day) :)) everywhere American goes you are behind... if you don't like what he post don't read his comments or ignore him.

vicshere says on May 7, 2008, 09:14:

maybe I am stalking...or is he stalking me....hummmmmm...or is he staking everyone on this board and continually insults Colombian people....maybe you don't take offense...even though I am not a Colombian ...I will jump up in their defense

vicshere says on May 7, 2008, 09:20:

I agree ..as I find elmo's post very degrading to Colombian women over all....and he is another poster than I have a concern about...and hopefully the new rules will clear those kinds of posts up

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 09:25:

It's time to stop this nonsense now. Vicshere, Rikito,, when you start your own forum you get to call the shots. Right now you are stalking another member.

kat's correct, as usual. you just don't get it, huh vic? you're not a mod...you've become little more than an annoying powwow stalker. no one believes for a second that you're defending anything..it's clear that you prefer constant complaining to simply touching the ignore button. that's what it's there for...

I don´t mind trolls at all, they can be ignore without needing to hit the coward "ignore user button".

Sometimes a troll needs to be feeded don´t want them to go starving, lets face it trolls are part of the internet, but our personalities and wanting to have the last word is what creates caos.

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

vicshere says on May 7, 2008, 09:46:

yes kat but ... I would like to see this site as it was about 2-3 years ago when this was about informing people about Colombia whether it was good or bad...which was the mission...I guess the mission has change... the idle babble of later is just taking up web bandwidth no more...it affects me because it takes longer to down load pages which are full of garble...like this

what a load.

1. it's certainly NOT your call, what this site is/isn't. it's peter's, plain and simple.

2. weak rationializations for constant moaing/complaining/stalking do nada to further your cause.

I propose that we ALL put on "ignore" buggie. If we did that with the ones that 100% of the time post crap about Colombia, we would be, Poor And Really HAPPY. If the mods don`t delete his account we put him on ignore!

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 7, 2008, 10:12:

Lisa, like in vigilante justice`? Or paraco style? (If the mods....we'll deal with the problem ourselves).

I would HATE to have to delete Peter's thread on RULES because of all this bickering and "creativity".

vicshere says on May 7, 2008, 10:16:
