PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
One personality type I have experienced since I have been living in Colombia is the "Right of Entitlement" trait. I have noticed this trait especially among women of all ages and younger men. This person feels strongly that because she is a woman or young man, a Colombian, rich, intelligent, married to someone like this or any combination of the aforementioned then the world is, without doubt, going to offer whatever they want regardless if they earned it or not or if they deserve it or not. Often these people have so heavily invested their personal identity in being that of an entitled person that they never consider the hard work and sacrifice that many times is needed. They often miss the road to deep emotional discovery. In his or her mind, the world owes them this or that simply because of who they are. I have had several experiences with this attitude and the result has been quite unfortunate and disappointing for the individual and those who must deal with this kind of personality.
Most of my Colombian friends and neighbors tend to agree with me somewhat, but they say there is nothing that can be done. I know some of you will think I am a crazy old man and I need to get a life…maybe so, but these Entitled Colombianas need to be careful or they are in for a sad life unless they marry rich.
Your thoughts?

SUERTE GRINGO says on Jul 20, 2008, 17:37: It's not specific to Colombia. This seems to be a global problem because the teenagers we hired as summer help at my company all possess the "Right of Entitlement" trait. ColombianoGringo says on Jul 20, 2008, 19:52: I find the problem of "entitlement" to be much worse amongst the youth in the US. A huge portion the new generation of "adults" are a bunch of lazy, practically useless louts who think the world owes them everything. This comes from the nasty habit of baby boomers coddling their "precious snowflakes" instead of preparing them for the harsh realities of life.

Robert Jorge says on Jul 20, 2008, 20:29: I think it is a real, contemporary trait everywhere. That it is common now in Colombia is what might be startling to some. I have seen the entitlement attitude on a personal level quite recently - involving Colombians and even Latinos in general here in the US. It is sad ... because it is a sure fire way to NEVER succeed, be happy, contribute, get ahead, whatever. People like that get what they want perhaps - but then 6 months later it is not sufficient. They are extremely ambitious - but with no work ethic. --"I believe in making the world safe for our children. ColombianoGringo says on Jul 20, 2008, 20:37: Try hiring young people in the US these days. Any schmuck fresh out of college wants $50,000 a year to start and we've found that very few are worth it. Many seem to think that they deserve a good salary, yet they don't seem to like hard work.

miamimike says on Jul 20, 2008, 21:11: RJ--here in Miami we see this Entitlement attitude in Triplicate but to an extent, here in Miami with the Cubans, we actually helped create it due to that Cuban Adjustment act of 1967. Under that law, Cubans get fast track permenent residency in 1 yr., 1 day. And that other program, "WET/DRY Foot law hasn't helped either. They get a lot of entitlements from our own Goverment(medicare, health insurance. Medicaid, Food stamps, Plan 8 housing, ree public transit passes, Senior Subsidized federal rent controlled apartments, reduced or free college tuition) If they come and are over 65, they get SSI and Medicare without even having to work one day under the system and pay NOT one Cent into SS. And don't let those SS checks be one day late!! And we wonder why our SS & Medicare system is in trouble! "Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." -- Feb. 28, 2008 --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

harvardexec says on Jul 20, 2008, 21:36: It's not just the SS and Medicare that is in trouble, look what happened and continues to happen with the mortgage fraud in South Florida (#1 in the nation). The wars have distracted many Americans from this issue. The laws that govern South Florida are abused more than anywhere else in the United States. Buongone says on Jul 21, 2008, 02:14: Desi, If they are so Precious, should'nt they be brought up through life taught the right way. Learning the "Precious" values, of getting somewhere in life by hard work. Rather than depending on someone, or some institution program to care for them.(Lazy)

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jul 21, 2008, 02:23: Buon, it's a common misconception that people here are lazy and don't work. Institution programs pay very little and most Swedes love their high tech stuff, good food, trips all over the world. Being on welfare you can't afford any of the good things in life, just barely survive. That's not what people here go for. Buongone says on Jul 21, 2008, 02:30: Thats in Sweden. But as a general rule. World wide, especially in the states, kids are getting lazy. I was impressed when I first went to Cali. And most everybody went to a universidad. Thats good. Without a good schooling they were not going to get anywhere in life. That point should be stressed more in the US. And worlwide as far as that idea go's.

Cerealkiller says on Jul 21, 2008, 03:15: Hmmm I have always thought the sense of entitlement has been an entirely western trait "it's my right to/ I deserve / I demand" This is seldom found in Colombia, perhaps until very recently...it is a shame. Philly says on Jul 21, 2008, 03:22: The problem in Colombia is a lot different. I am seeing that the kids here do not do a damn thing where as in the US the kids at least study and realize they have to at least study and get a good education. I believe parents push their kids more in the US.

Cerealkiller says on Jul 21, 2008, 06:22: I think we all have a different perception of entitlement. I don't believe Colombias have a particularly acute sense of entitlement, as in fighting for their rights, or actively and openly seeking benefits due a genuine sense of entitlement. However, what most of you guys are talking about is not entitlement per se but rather opportunism. miamimike says on Jul 21, 2008, 10:07: CG--things must have changed as far as the Vietnamese. And I wouldn't even feel bad about a Vietnamese War Vet who was fighting with us in Vietnam. They were at least trying to free their country of Communism, unlike the Cubans who cut&Ran to Miami! I would say he(vietnamese) deserved it if he was injured fighting with us, helping us. All These Cubans getting SSI Never did diddly Squat to help us period anyplace! I am not referring to younger cubans born here who payed into the system only these after 65 yr of age freeloaders who come here to suck up the Benefits. Some even go back to Cuba to live part of the year thru a 3rd country on their SSI-talk about a ripoff! Hopefully one of these years a US President has the cajones to repeal this Cuban Adjustment act and to hell with their Votes. It sure wasn't Bush, maybe Obama? God only knows someone someday soon has to have the Guts to cut this law! "Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? That's interesting.
