The Right of Entitlement...real or B.S.?

One personality type I have experienced since I have been living in Colombia is the "Right of Entitlement" trait. I have noticed this trait especially among women of all ages and younger men. This person feels strongly that because she is a woman or young man, a Colombian, rich, intelligent, married to someone like this or any combination of the aforementioned then the world is, without doubt, going to offer whatever they want regardless if they earned it or not or if they deserve it or not. Often these people have so heavily invested their personal identity in being that of an entitled person that they never consider the hard work and sacrifice that many times is needed. They often miss the road to deep emotional discovery. In his or her mind, the world owes them this or that simply because of who they are. I have had several experiences with this attitude and the result has been quite unfortunate and disappointing for the individual and those who must deal with this kind of personality.

Most of my Colombian friends and neighbors tend to agree with me somewhat, but they say there is nothing that can be done. I know some of you will think I am a crazy old man and I need to get a life…maybe so, but these Entitled Colombianas need to be careful or they are in for a sad life unless they marry rich.

Your thoughts?

I also think that this is nothing peculiar to Colombia, although maybe they are more obvious there.

Many woman, AND men, everywhere seek to improve their situation by latching onto someone who has more.

I find the problem of "entitlement" to be much worse amongst the youth in the US. A huge portion the new generation of "adults" are a bunch of lazy, practically useless louts who think the world owes them everything. This comes from the nasty habit of baby boomers coddling their "precious snowflakes" instead of preparing them for the harsh realities of life.

I think it is a real, contemporary trait everywhere. That it is common now in Colombia is what might be startling to some. I have seen the entitlement attitude on a personal level quite recently - involving Colombians and even Latinos in general here in the US. It is sad ... because it is a sure fire way to NEVER succeed, be happy, contribute, get ahead, whatever. People like that get what they want perhaps - but then 6 months later it is not sufficient. They are extremely ambitious - but with no work ethic.

Try hiring young people in the US these days. Any schmuck fresh out of college wants $50,000 a year to start and we've found that very few are worth it. Many seem to think that they deserve a good salary, yet they don't seem to like hard work.

I remember paying a lot of dues and eating a lot of shit when I was first starting out. It seems like they don't understand the concept of having to EARN the things you want in life. It's very frustrating for a small business owner. Keep in mind that I am in my thirties, so it's not like I'm some old guy bitching about the young whippersnappers.

RJ--here in Miami we see this Entitlement attitude in Triplicate but to an extent, here in Miami with the Cubans, we actually helped create it due to that Cuban Adjustment act of 1967. Under that law, Cubans get fast track permenent residency in 1 yr., 1 day. And that other program, "WET/DRY Foot law hasn't helped either. They get a lot of entitlements from our own Goverment(medicare, health insurance. Medicaid, Food stamps, Plan 8 housing, ree public transit passes, Senior Subsidized federal rent controlled apartments, reduced or free college tuition) If they come and are over 65, they get SSI and Medicare without even having to work one day under the system and pay NOT one Cent into SS. And don't let those SS checks be one day late!! And we wonder why our SS & Medicare system is in trouble!

These are the first types of entitlements that need to be gotten rid of. There are some government assistance programs that are warranted, but again, you should have to EARN them by paying into the system. To be fair, the Cubans aren't the only ones to get SSI if they move here over 65.

==================================================================

CG---the Cubans are the ONLY Group who get SS Checks if when they arrive here and are over 65 and having NEVER Payed a DIME into the system. Others, say like mexicans, Colombians receieve SS IF they payed a Minimum of 10 years into the system(or if they become disabled, they get it at an earlier age). Talk about injustice, take a United States War Veteran who served our country, he/she cannot collect SS unless they payed 10 years into the System. My two cousins are in that position as well as myself(all Veterans), cannot collect until we pay a Minimum into SS for 10 years. Here in Miami, they(cubans) are the most pronounced as far as Entitlements. I really don't notice it with any other Immigrant groups, latin, haitian ect.

I think we all have a different perception of entitlement. I don't believe Colombias have a particularly acute sense of entitlement, as in fighting for their rights, or actively and openly seeking benefits due a genuine sense of entitlement. However, what most of you guys are talking about is not entitlement per se but rather opportunism.
A person with a sense of entitlement would never feel ashamed receiving government handouts because they truly think they deserve them, and their logic works along those lines. Colombians for the most part would rather die than accept publicly that they are mantenidos, they might seek it but deep inside they know they're cheating the system.
One thing is having a true sense of entitlement and another is to be blatantly useless and what we call "recostado"...most Colombians are not like that, but it is far more common than a true sense of entitlement.

i have spoken about this in countless threads....were talking about colombia...it goes nowhere to say this posture/attitude exists world wide. true. but this is a thread on colombia and i'll limit my observations to colombia.

in my years living there, i never ceased to be amazed at the attitudes of the entitled by birth or marriage. they condescend and look down upon the 97% of colombians in what i'll call the 'have not' catagory. they genuinely think their shit don't stink and conduct themselves accordingly.

many of these wealthy are friends of mine and i never cease amazement at how they see life and others.

we were in my friends finca in llano grande and a group of maybe ten friends were passing the day, eating, drinking and just generally passing time. one of the ladies present, with a marble sized diamond on her finger, a new mercedez out front, and a well known kazillionaire looked out the window of my friends house and, watching the mayor domo and his wife and children walk by, commented....'look at these people, what is their problem? they have their gardens, their chickens, their cows and houses. what's wrong with them? they always want more." thus, she.

well the truth is, yes they have their gardens and animals; if not, they wouldn't eat. they basically have squatter's rights, a house, a garden, utilities and a place to live. they are serfs. if they receive ANY monetary increment, it's paltry. it's a subsistance life.

watching this internally impoverished woman speak as she did, was sad. what could anyone say, that would deliver her from this delusion? i don't know. she's just one of countless who are born, raised live and die, thinking not that it's owed to them...rathe, they have it and that's proof enough of their priveledge. pity

Hopefully one of these years a US President has the cajones to repeal this Cuban Adjustment act and to hell with their Votes. It sure wasn't Bush, maybe Obama? it's a strange system, aztec and i don't think reformation is on the horizon anytime soon. when i first met with my attorney, i was sitting in the waiting room with a number of other applicants. no one's story being identical.

there was one man in a wheel chair who had lost both legs to a heavy equipment. his disability couldn't have been more evident. however, as he commented, he had been waiting near 3 years for his benifits. 3 years is what it takes....no matter what. maybe in the case of refugees (vietnamese, cambodian, et al) it's different, i don't know.

but after all that, i got now after another three years of benifits and cost of living increases, it's up to $177.00 monthly.
