If so , where and for what kind of fish ?

Yes I've fished out of Nuqui on the Pacfic for Yellowfin Tuna and some Bonitos-also saw a Sailfish-at least 5 days in total.

Fished the Caribbean out of Tolu for whatever-caught a Barracuda saw another Sailfish.

My advice is not to bother going fishing at all-Colombians have managed to destroy almost everything-I have never seen people more fond of nets and dynamite-I mean absolute fucking idiots is what they are.

Once the guy who's driving the boat starts making motions like he's throwing dynamite on the way out you know it's going to be a long slow day-this happened to me twice.

I could go on and on and on but I hope you get the picture-some of the so-called sport fishing boats in CTG didn't even have rod holders but the did have beer can holders.

Sam, otherwise then the B'Cuda you mention, what else did you catch?

Out of Tolu-SFA.

Out of Nuqui lots of small Bonitos a few YFT and nothing else.

Sam, why is Venezuela supposed to be such a billfish hotspot and Colombia, apparently, such a bust?

Also, isn't the best billfishing in the world right up the Pac coast in Panama?

Sam Salmon says on Feb 16, 2008, 20:37:

It has to do with offshore currents over ledges and undersea mounts that cause a mixing of deeper nutrient rich water and warmer tropical water thus concentrating bait in massive amounts-this happens in Panama and Venezuela.

Colombia with it's unique position at the top of the continent generally lacks this kind of structure, I found some off Cabo Corrientes but it was a wasteland, nothing in the water at all, the current was many many miles away and hadn't brought any nutrient rich water close to the coast.

The coast out of Nuqui is for the most part a shallow sandy ledge that is relatively barren, that which hasn't been dynamited is empty.

This apparently changes as you head further north to Bahia Solano and onto Panama.

Ditto the area outside of Islas San Bernardo it's sandy shallow and has been scraped clean by Shrimpers and heavily dynamited by locals.

The fleet out of CTG does see some action but their 40's style lack of ethics means the small populations of Billfish they target are doomed.

While scuba diving in the National Park Tayrona you could see the damage from the dinamite fishing. Especially on the coral. Also there has been some talk about the coal dust from the large coal shipping terminal north up the coast from Santa Marta hurting the marine environment. Although while returning from the dive trip, the boat captain was dragging a fishing line and landed a small bill fish. Good looking fish, just to small.

Sam Salmon says on Feb 17, 2008, 17:03:

Freshwater has been devastated by the use of fine-mesh nets which people use to catch any and everything they can.

Of course much of what they catch is too small to eat so it's discarded on dry land-this I have seen myself both Fresh and Inshore Saltwater-abject idiocy as only Colombians can manifest it.

Hunting?

Taking a gun is a good idea in many places in the countryside but those doing the real hunting aren't to be trifled with.

Some small "Tarpon", I have taken Tarps up to 80 pounds 20 minutes from Santa Marta.
Even though most here do not practice conservation ethics, fishing is still great if you know where to go. I have never been skunked in 9 years of fishing here.
