If you are so concerned about Gringos, I suggest that you try Bolivia or maybe Tibet. How about a village near the Amazon headwaters? There may be an undisturbed rock under which you can crawl.

MT, unfortunately your excellent thread about gringo invasion in Colombia was de-railed into gringo invasion to central Florida. It's kind of hard to get that train back on the tracks.

Basically, I don't mind a couple of awed, blue-eyed gringo backpackers and English teachers, perhaps a few retired couples and others who have chosen to live in Colombia for their own reasons in my beloved Cali but that's about the size of it. Cali is NOT a tourist city and has little to offer to well-travelled gringos, besides the mattresses suck and the beds are really narrow.

Mama mia...la campiña, great thread however do not believe the average will be around for long. Many are afraid of their own shadows but if not all it takes is to mouth off to the wrong person and they will be high tailing it out of here with their tails between their legs and will be marked for life!
Trying not to sound like a moron, should they doubt what is said they need to do some research on the ELN, ERG and the like where they also kidnap and extort the locals then we have leaders in other countries fueling the fire. Like most of us here, being active in society, humble, enjoying life's standards as the locals there is not a problem. Depending what region you live, you will be watched, sooner or later will be paid a visit to let you know that you have been watched and how you are accepted along with the locals. Guess this is the advantage living in the rural regions where life is great!!

Ya know MT. I love my adopted Country . I run a small biz. that has a Regan ( lol ) trickle down economic effect. From my finished product ( leather jackets ) back to the tanneries to the sheep farmers ..

There is no Utopia , to include Colombia .. There are a whole lot more Colombians living in the States then there are Gringo's here.. Willing to bet there are some real scum bucket Colombians' floating around ...

Reminds me of the old saying " Don't knock farmers with your mouth full " .. One of these days when the economic's gets real bad in the land of Green Back ; you just might see the DEMS in power and the money pot dry up for a bunch of Country's .. I;m getting real tried of folks slamming Gringo's on this board ...

They are all in Poblado and to some extent Laureles. They are safe in their little bubble. There's no need for them to go runniig home. If you're happy being stranded...

I have a small business that caters to gringos. I kinda need them to come down - visitors or forever.

So the peso fluctuations hurt me big time. There is a huge exposure risk and any real gringo who want's to live on his 401K, Retirment, Social Security, would be foolish coming here instead of US Dollar currency Panama or Ecuador where the only thing to worry about is inflation.

I count on those tourists but they are all USD. After the global correction that will continue, it will be difficult for US citizens to travel outside of the US. This worries me.

I hear ya BUT...

Prejudice prevails. In the US have you ever heard someone scream out "HEY we speak english here!", "Put the bed sheets back on the bed camel jockey" etc.... Those Indians are all over the place. They eat stinky food, listen to that god aweful whiny music, they don't drink alcohol, pray to a cow and don't know the difference between a touchdown and run down. Cricket is a sport? They just are NOT cool, not like us - they only fit in with their own kind.

The typical gringo here travels in packs, most only know a few phrases or speak heavily broken Spanish. Wearing a polo shirt tucked into his jeans, he seeks out his own kind because frankly he doesn't care for Colombian culture. He hates the music, the food (don't even talk meat), the rules, doing business, drivers. The list is endless. He is constantly seeking comfort and comiseration from his own kind.

Can you blame? This is typical when a group assimilates to a foreign land. They are no longer home. Safety in numbers. The McShanes whant to live next door to the McFarleys. Irish neighborhoods, Chinatown etc...

This is normal human nature. Poblado will soon be "Gringblado".

Just remember in Colombia the gringo is the Camel Jockey with the dot on his head - doesn't fit in - not that they want to. If they only knew would they do the same? It looks like two 18 year old hookers are enough to appease the misery. I'll take a blonde and a brunette.

Read the article ( above ) some time ago ( Funny ) .. Dam Cow's , good thing my Jackets are made from Oveja ( Lambskin ) they be smarter ! I have been fighting an up hill battle with the tanneries in Latin America for , three years now .. I am proud to say that I will but our Quality of leather and workmanship up against any brand ..

Truth is , when it comes to our guy bags & wallets ; we have go go out side Colombia for our Leather .

We will be adding a line of Shearling this season . The Lambskin Leather has to come in from Uruguay , then cut and made here..

We are in niche market in the States really .. High end , top shelve Leather at about 60% of what you will pay for most ( Italian / Spanish )

Just have a hair up my ass about Gringo slams when I am busting my ass , fighting an uphill battle in debt , trying to make a buck , at the same time pitting back in to the Colombian economy .. Been a tough week , need to drink more this weekend , or is that going to make be a Malo Gringo too..lol

waterdawg- got a website or some fotos? I need a leather jacket (it gets chillier than I'm accustomed to in both Santa Cruz and Lima). Maybe I can swing by, pick up a couple, and buy you a drink or two next time I'm in the neighborhood....

Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab

Yea Guy , I have two sites, both are under reconstruction ... One wholesale ( Biz to Biz ) and the other retail for the States .. Look up Arroyoleather.com ( Wholesale site ) I think my man Charlie put it back up while the Retail is down.. We are adding some new stuff to include a line of Lambskin Shearling..

I have my hands full with the production end .. Need to spend some cash ( I don't have ) and get down to Mountivideo Uruguay in about a week .. We have had some requests for Lambskin Shearling .. Just don't have it here in Colombia..

Nice site and great looking leather wear. I always enjoyed wearing leather jackets, one thing I miss about living in the tropics (sub-tropics[?]).

Before my first transatlantic flight, in '79, I bought a Colombian carry-on bag.

Generally leather goods in the US, at that time, had the texture water soaked cardboard left out to dry in the sun.

It was, and still is, gorgeous, although thirty years has taken its toll. Brand was "Land", which I guess was the predecessor to Coach. I paid almost $300.
