The past and present history of Barranquilla

Many gringos have a warp image of curramba.
At this moment I have no time to get into it , the dog walker is about to pick me up for my daily walk in the park, but when I get back I wanna learn you all there is to know about the most intereseting ,TALENTED , cosmopolitan, diverse, SAFEST and happiest city in all Colombia.
And why there are almost NO barranquilleros living overseas

Way back when I was kid this is what we listened to at home.
When cachacos were still walking around wearing ponchos with no electricity we were taking the Latin world by storm with Barranquilla’s’ Pacho Galan, merecumbe.
His music was popular all over latin america 30 years before modern salsa.

What happened to Barranquilla’s wealth?
Sit back and let me learn you
Due to the alarming immigration of Europeans escaping WW1, WW2 along with Arabs and Jews, Barranquilla quickly became known as la Puerta de Oro or the golden gates to heaven, one of the most prosperous cities in all South America
Funny chit, Barranquilla was actually founded by a fokin gringo and my great, great, great, great grandaddy.
WE had to share our wealth with our less fortunate Andean Indian brothers to the south.
This continues and continues until some of the wealth dried up but there is still plenty left, thus the reason why our representatives in Bogotá have petitioned, many times, for Barranquilla to be a separate country, but it has fallen on deaf ears and we don’t want them cachacos upset, then they’ll bring war on our ass, and as we all know Barranquilla has never lived under violence.
To make it so my gringo brothers could understand, look at it this way.
Barranquilla is just like NYC.
NYC generates most of the money in the USA but they have to share it with less fortunate cities.
While I pay ridiculous amount on local and state taxes, Herb in Idaho, pays dilly squat, but enjoys all the benefit America has to offer thanks to NYC money.
If not for NYC this country would be another, England. Italy, France Germany etc. and not the super power they are.
Now why is Curramba so talented? I don’t fokin know, is just the way it is!!
Thank you!!

I'll get there, when I get there!

Technical point about "Herb in Ohio": it could probably be claimed that he actually receives less in federal gov't benefits than the people of NYC. Also, as a point of personal pride, I'd say California would be better suited to make a move for independence. What would independent New Yorkers eat? Sewer rats?

Who do you think built California? That's right, New York bankers and New York companies. We own you and your precious farms, so be careful. :P

And the people in NY don't receive squat in federal aid, let me tell you. We have the only subway that gets no federal money. We don't even get enough money to protect us from terrorism. Congress gave it to each state equally. Can you believe that shit? Who the hell is going to bomb Bumbletwat, Wyoming?

Alright Tolu, I can accept that New York banking might have grown California, but London banking grew New York, so who cares? I'm just talking about who's most self-sustaining in 2008.

As far as federal aid, let's talk social support alone. I'm not bashing the socio-economically disadvantaged, but who do you think has more people on welfare support? Poverty occurs in much greater numbers in urban centers, so I gotta figure that'd be NYC receiving more than Bumbletwat, Ohio (although, puntos for the name). We then could get more creative and say that New York is at least indirectly responsible for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, that alone has got to dwarf the amount of money EVER spent by the fed. gov't on Ohio.

Tolú says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:04:

August,
Who cares about self-sustaining? We have the best natural harbor in the Americas. We can import food cheaply from anywhere in the world.

And Bill Clinton stopped federal support to welfare, so forget about that argument. Cities are actually cheap to maintain compared to the countryside. Example: It's cheaper to keep 500 people in an apartment building than to take care of all the miles of highways, roads, telephone wire, water supply, and electricity that goes to rural areas, to support 500 people spread out over thousands and thousands and thousands of miles. That's why in poor countries, like Colombia, the countryside is really f**king poor and have never seen flush-toilets.

So, in conclusion, all the Bumbletwats can thank Jesus for the existence of NYC and the revenue we create to fund their lazy, welfare, redneck culitos. ;-)

august says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:29:

Alright, alright, Tolu, we'll set the independence movement discussion aside then.

Back to welfare. Clinton actually restructured welfare, it certainly didn't end. AFDC became TANF, but that mostly just time limits on unemployment support collection. Plenty of Estadounidenses still make use of fed. medical care which is actually the most expensive part of the US welfare program (think insurance...). I can't claim to know for sure if that's more expensive than roads/electricity, but having more poor people in urban areas like NYC means those areas are going to rack up some serious bills for the fed gov't.

This of course has little to do with the history of Barranquilla though, so I'm going to apologize to the Modefoque for that one.

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Tolú says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:39:

Bill Clinton ended *federal* support for welfare, I didn't say he ended it completely. Now it's the states' responsibility.

Now, as far as medical help for the poor from the Federal Government (the Medicaid program), you are wrong again. New York actually pays in to the system: meaning we get equal to what we put in, unlike other states who take advantage of our charity and good will in remaining a part of the Union.

Note the "welfare cheats" are all conservative, rural states. I keep telling you, but you don't want to believe me...what's up with that?

And I think elmodefoque is right! Without Barranquilla, Colombia would be another Bolivia.

august says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:54:

Alright that diagram is fine and all, but I still maintain that there are more poor people in NYC than Bumbletwat, Ohio (although I'm now looking back at the discussion and realizing that Bumbletwat was originally in Idaho). Their greater numbers are simply offset by the greater number of wealthy people/businesses also in NYC that Bumbletwat does not have. So I guess NYC can feel good about itself as a whole, but there's still plenty of people in your own backyard (assuming your a NYer) "collecting" your tax dollars.

0 funny, 0 helpful.

august says on Jul 10, 2008, 15:55:

Oh, and Clinton did not end federal support for welfare. The federal dollars were decreased, restrictions were added and their allocation was delegated to the individual states.

Tolú says on Jul 10, 2008, 17:14:

august,
NY only seems full of poor people because of all the filth and congestion of our city. :P In truth, it is rural hick-America that has the highest rates of poverty and welfare dependency.

[["Their greater numbers are simply offset by the greater number of wealthy people/businesses also in NYC that Bumbletwat does not have."]]

Well then, you have to look at why there are so many wealthy people and businesses here to begin with. It's not just because wealthy people like to live in cities and poor people like to live in the country. It is because agriculture and mineral extraction, which are the industries of Bumbletwat, are simply not the basis for wealth accumulation. The poorest countries in the world tend to be the ones that are most rural. Urban centers like NY are wealthy, not because wealthy people live there (that would be a tautology), but because NY is a worldwide center for wealth-aggregating industry: commerce, banking, financial services, manufacturing, fashion, media, culture, etc.

Okay, forget about the rich. You may still think that NY is full of bums on welfare doing nothing. There is some of that, but for the most part it's full of people striving to get ahead in life, who work their asses off harder than anyone else--and some of them make out quite well. You can have only a high school diploma and earn a hell of a lot of money if you land a union job, for instance. You can also go out every night of the week and meet all kinds of people. I would say even the poorest people in NY lead a better life than any of those guys in Bumbletwat, with their thumbs up their asses watching QVC and drinking Kool-Aid in their trailer-park houses.

august says on Jul 11, 2008, 07:01:

Tolu, I agree, the rates of poverty are higher in Bumbletwat, so you´re more likely to be in poverty in Bumbletwat, but the actual number of people in poverty is higher in urban centers. But I hear ya, much respect to the people grinding it out in NYC. Although we gotta have a little love for the countryfolk too, they´re not so bad.

And yes, something must be done about the Durty Jerz soon.
