the other face

Hi guys...
I know this thread could possibly be demoted or deleted, and actual intention is no other than show you the "other" face that some of our countrymen have to deal with here...

Last Sunday I was strolling the streets of Mexico city along with a friend of mine. We were walking on Reforma ave, which is one of the most beautiful avenues in this city, the Colombian embassy is on this ave.

So there we were, walking and having a good time, when all of a sudden my friend saw a girl who was crying lying on the floor right in front of the Colombian embassy. We stopped and looked at her and finally we decided to approach to her. She was a little bit scared at first. We asked her if there was something we could do for her and to my surprise she answered with colombian accent "I am alone and I am scared", I asked her where she was from and replied: "From Medellin, Colombia"... wow!!!!!

I asked why she was scared and said "I came here so I can have a better chance to improve my life, but I ran out of money and I am lost, this hijueputa city is so big..."

We took her to have something to eat since she had two days of being in the streets... after she ate I asked where she was staying at and told me that at first she was staying at a hotel but since she had no money left she had to leave her hotel room...

I was shocked at this... I had never seen this side of the "reality" and it hurts... it's really sad...

Finally, my friend (mexican) offered her house and told her that she could stay at her place the following days... i asked her if she wanted to return home since my friend and I could buy a ticket for her, she said "no, thanks I'll stay here cause in Colombia there are no opportunities, you should know..."

She has no transferable skills? I'm sure she could work in a shop or something, share a flat with others, have rented a room in a family home. Hotels are expensive.. that's the first thing to avoid.

I'm soft-hearted when confronted with situatons like this in-person, but stepping back I am apalled that someone would be so unprepared. I recently met a vivo who announced that they were expecting someone else to pay their way to x x and x place... as if they deserved it simply for being them.

Starting anew is hard work, one must be prepared, have a plan and do what it takes. I have a friend who is an IT professional and moved to the UK from Oz.. he moved furniture for two months in order to get by.

I guess she got more to tell besides lack of opportunities back in Colombia. I she is so desperate she should had taken the ticket offer, alone in another country, what about family love? She must be by herself in the world but to get a visa and aireplane tickets is not as easy.

I think the same as you webmanco... now regarding the job... she has no papers... she is on a tourist visa...

this girl is my paisana and i feel like I have to help her, but my friend offered her home... now I am a little bit worried because she has (legally speaking) an illegal person at home and here in Mexico that could be considered "tratante de blancas"... I honestly thought that this could stay at my place but since Im a man and she a woman, i though she could probably thought that i was taking advantage of her situation... I don't know...

As I say I am going to help her in everything I can, but I honestly feel sorry for her situation...

Does she really have a chance of becoming legal in Mexico? If not, then maybe she would have better opportunities in Colombia (but in a different region).

The only thing I can think that might help her is getting a job with a Mexican firm that would give her a working visa, either that or being there on a student visa for a program. Doing the program, and networking her way into a legal job. But considering she is already there, then maybe she can't change her Visa?

Gabito movio mio, thats very sweet of you and your friend to help this girl...I am sorry to be the party pooper but as you may know, not everyone is as nice as you are and some people take advantage of this. I say talk to your friend and ask her to be cautious, you never know... Again, that is very nice of you two, I dont think I would've gone as far as offering my house to someone I don't know, but I wish your friend the best of lucks and hopefully this girl will find something to do in not too awful long.

Sounds like somebody is going to off her back in Medellin.

I can't see Mexico being the land of opportunity. Mexicans are as hard on central americans and other latinos in their country as americans are on them.

I say she takes a bus up to the northern states, find a "reliable" coyote and sharpen up her river-crossing skills. Pobrecita.

gabolicious says on Aug 13, 2007, 15:01:

well guys and ladies...

here are some other comments:
- My friend offered her place because she said that colombians were kind to her, she says: "colombians did a lot for me when traveling in Colombia, how come I will stay here looking at her with my arms folded?", I don't really want to start a fight or anything but saying that ALL mexicans try to take advantage over colombians is simply too radical. She is always saying nice things about Colombia, some of our friends have told her "if you love Colombia so much go to that place and try to earn the same money you earn here" (I am not going to discuss whether this is true or not, nor if I'm in favor or not, cause my personal story is very different from hers)

- Maybe Mexico is not the best place to start a new life, but for THIS GIRL was or at least was the best option or was a viable alternative... no matter what we think about that issue. Probably her original idea was to enter to the US paying a "coyote" just as many latinos.

- "Mexicans are as hard on central americans and other latinos in their country as americans are on them." as far as they are illegals, yes! (at least I think so), as Simon once said (correct me if I'm wrong: "todos los que tengan algo bueno que aportar a mi país serán bienvenidos..." as far as I know (no matter if its a first world country but all illegals are treated as delinquents)... I don't know.

- Telling her to go to the States is not an option either... from my point of view, maybe she could have "better" options there but as illegal mmmmmmmm, believe me that will not solve the problem.

- My friend KNOWS she has to be careful just like the way she has to be careful when having a stranger at home, no matter if its american, colombian, mexican, peruvian, etc.

- I am confindent that she would think twice her situation and go back to Colombia. Anyway I will be there to help her. What I can do is just tell her the pros and cons of being here in Mexico... and then she will be the only one who decide what she would like to do with her life. Cause at the end of the day it's HER life and not mine.

"Most of you guys have NO IDEA what it's like to immigrate to the US. NO IDEA!!!!" -- rubito

I know what it's like to immigrate to another country to "better your life", it's an uphill battle. You win some things you lose some others, but the process of uprooting or being uprooted is traumatic. Add to that the fact that you have to start completely from scratch and reinvent yourself... it's like learning to walk again.

Regarding Mexican's treatment of other latino illegals -- My boyfriend had to cross Mexico by bus, walk across the border with a Guatemalan coyote. On his way up to the northern border he was robbed by Mexican police TWICE, once they held a gun to his father's head and threatened to kill him. By the time they got to the crossing point they had very little left on them.

It doesn't matter where your "LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES" is: Spain, Italy, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico... as long as you are illegal.... your opportunities MIGHT BE ZERO...

On the other hand, here in Mexico there are lots of argentinians who came when the economic crisis in Argentina... and I wonder if Mexico has nothing to offer, then why they stay here??? Maybe for argentinians works...

I talked to this girl yesterday... she first said that she is thinking in coming back to Colombia, but first she wants to try at least a couple of months... I have a colombian friend here, Juan Camilo, who is illegal as well, but he is doing pretty good here, I was thinking in introduce this girl to Juan Camilo...

Gabo, I have been to Cancun twice...once when i was 17 and I dont remember most of it. It was my senior trip and then I went back like a year after and I just hated it...it was just not my piece of cake, I did like Playa del Carmen and a pyramid tour I made but I dont think im going back to cancun...
