The Old PBH posts are much better than todays Posts

A little tip for anyone wanting to step into a time capsule and read what things were like in Colombia in 2000, or 2001, I find some of the best posts and comments in that time.

The old posts are way better than the modern day posts! If your bored some time. I suggest you go back into the archives as it is trippy to read some of the old stuff.....just enter into Search "2000" or the year you want.

You'd be surprised at how the same fears are still there. I do see less of "Colombiana's are Hot" posts which is refreshing. You don't see, "Penthouse apt in Poblado", etc.

I wonder if things were better then than now? Happier?

The posts of that time tell a lot about how todays posts are how they are. Interesting (at least to me).

Lon7, yes go back and read some of UTC/Gomezman/GringoinBogota/ColombianX/Lionheart(a great chef)/Elmos early day story telling, etc back in 2003 to about 2007, then things starting going down hill, there was some great info y alot of good natured badgering, before the bad gringo piranhas showed up.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I searched "Gomezman" but it only brings up a modern day post about disgruntled members who went searching for a different ant hill.

What years was he?

I'm talking about the early years, 1999, 2000, 2001, when PBH was a wide eyed boys vision and Colombia was still the wild west, (well sort of). Not recent members.

I believe he was gomezman5 or some number on the end, he is a Colombian from Chicago, an attorney, can cook, loves birds and has a woman attorney connection in Cali. But told it like it is in Colombia, DANGEROUS, pulled no punches about warning gringos to be careful in dangerous Colombia y alot of Colombians got down on him for preaching the truth.

Here are some of Gomezman5's old postings. I emailed him a few weeks ago to see if he would come back but he was pretty noncommittal, sounds like he has moved on from PBH:

""""Caslug...I just think if the Girl is not here, on my soil....the hell with it. No fantasies for me.You are right. Us lawyers learn the comcept of Caveat Emptor as soon as we take contracts in law school. You have a duty to investigate to protect your own interests. There is a huge difference though between buying a tangible product here in the states, and importing a girlfriend from another country. You can research on line any product you want to buy. You really can't learn much about a woman that you don't know very well, and never will know her very well......until she is here with you!

I say,if you want a Colombiana, there a tons of them already here in this country. Look, if she falls in love with you HERE, on US soil, at least you know she isn't using you for an exit ticket. You can date here here, and see what she is really like after learning about all the new found rights she has as a women here, that she never had in Colombia.

That's the whole point. My Colombian friend once told me something I will never ever forget. He said if you are in Colombia, and you fall for one of our girls, and she falls for you, tell her that if you marry her, that you want to live in Colombia, if she likes that idea, than maybe you found a good woman. The only problem is that those women will be too few indeed. Most women will have nothing to do with you if you tell them you want to stay there. Ok, so call me synical.
To me, it's not worth the risk"""""

While I agree that Gomezman's posts have a certain entertainment value I don't think the posts have in general gotten any worse over the time. I've been with PBH fromthe very start, as a matter of fact, I used to read and occasionally post (under a different name) even prior to the overhaul Peter made in 2003 when you got to register an account before posting. It used to be lots of "anonymous" posters and the standard was not that good at all.

Over the years the same topics have been discussed over and over again and it's always a good idea to use the search feature if you want to know something specific about Colombia, are preparing a trip etc. We also have a bunch of regulars, people who are pretty talked out on Colombia and have told their stories so many times already that it's hard to find a new angle. However, I personally enjoy the chatter part too, the stories re-told and the community feeling of the place. So, it's a little of a mixed bag; if you are tired and bored of the chichat and banter, stick to informative posts only.

No forum, no message board, no debate is ever better that the median average of the people participating in it.

No,, things are about the same,,, some better, some worse. Happier ? Hummm, I doubt it,, when people quit worrying about dying they think of something new that causes their problem.

What happened? Well,, for one thing,, back then,, almost NO ONE on this board knew much about Colombia. Only a relatively few people traveled to Colombia in 2000. The country was in the process of change,, In 2002 Uribe was elected president and instituted a hard line approach and took back ALL the cities / towns and almost all the highways in,, what? less than a year? . Colombia had suffered 60 years of weenies and appeasers and the country was ready to collapse.OH,, that's right and one mime lover.

There was a 2-1/2 ton (duce and a half) military truck that came into town with a 50 caliber machine gun mounted over the cab that I saw on my first visit to rural Colombia,, that was late 2002. The military made weekly trips and one or two had in their hand neat looking 40mm grenade launchers (revolving, multi-shot) Haven't seen that much firepower since 2004.

I'd say that some folks learned about Colombia starting in 2004 ? However, they mostly had experience in the higher estratos (5,6) in the cities.

Even now,, few,, actually,, almost zero,, know much about Colombian life outside the cities (towns less than 50K population).

I noticed one person who says he lives in a rural area but advocated drinking the water out of streams,,, I don’t know about him,, maybe he’s dead now, because you don’t directly drink stream water anywhere in the world.

So,, the site owner,, Peter,, was way ahead of his time,,2000,, hummm, I remember seeing a 1999 date? I can NOT remember having much of a problem with anything he’s said.

OH,, BTW,, There seems to be ZERO posts by any member prior before this post By camilo on Nov 25, 2003, 14:07 in Friendly Talkzone (number 867). Crap,, I was hoping the entire data base had been restored,, including posts under my original handle.

Peter has his posts BEFORE that,, but ONLY HIS. I can imagine why,, hey, peter if I guess do I get some kind of prize?

Poco - you out there?

Yes,, I was looking up the old posts. Crap,, not all of them are in the data base. Anyway,, I’m back in the states so my work and looking at the internet are almost the same,, although making posts doesn’t pay very well,, still,, keeps me occupied.

PS: I built another house in an estrato 1 barrio. A really class structure. Renter is so happy,, it even has CITY GAS and gas is almost FREE. Like 10,000 pesos per month and a person can't use that much gas in a month. MY cost is about 3,000 per month,, but,, you know,,, a person has to recover his investment.

That's a different sister. Now the sister that you mention likes to drive her car while wearing a VERY short skirt while I'm in the passenger seat watching it ride up and up and up those long legs of hers. After a week with them, I don't blame the Colombian guys for anything they do. A man can only take so much.
