The Narco in all of us

Well I didn’t think I’d ever see the day when I would defend nuestro presidente but here we go. It is interesting to see that there have been allegations made against our friend Antonio Navarro Wolf, although similar allegations have also been made against my personal friend, Alvaro Uribe Velez. I have been quite clear about my attacks on the President, which have involved bringing up his para-narco past. Well, I have to now be honest with the readers and consider the truth of the matter.

Let us think of the influence that the narcos have had on all of our humble lives. If there is one Colombian that claims that his or her life is completely free of all drug related business then please let me hear your case. The influence of narco traficantes in Colombian society is perhaps something that cannot be related to any other society in the western hemisphere. Not only is there direct corruption of politicians and judges but there is a type of corruption that affects every Colombian citizen. Are we not all guilty of frequenting nightclubs built by the narcos, buying from their shops, investing in their property which we ourselves live in; investing in the very people who we apparently despise.

Colombians are most content to continue with their lives, oblivious to the fact their money is advancing the very people that their rhetoric condemns. It is only when the violence they denounce arrives on their doorstep that voices are raised. Every Colombian, from rich to poor is indebted to the wealth that given to the country by the narcos and any person that denies this is, unfortunately, living in a world unbeknown to reality.

parce...

I have to find myself in agreement with GringoDeLoui, for the most past. I don't think that, using the interpretation you're employing, any country in the world is completely free from interacting directly or indirectly with narcos or criminals in general.

However, one has to distinguish quite clearly between different degrees of involvement, even if it's not always easy to do so.

At the end everyone craves for money and for power.
The easier accessible it is the better.
Everyone gets tempted to make the quick buck and everyone in power tries to stay there.
People only think of themselves and not of the others.
Thats why nothing will ever 100% work.
Bush is the same as Uribe or Mahatir or Mugabe or anyone else. Only some are more clumsy in their craving for power and wealth than others.

Bush thought that two terms are not enough and Uribe thought one term is not enough. Well, two terms sounds reasonable, but you see the tendency.

Uribe, and Navarro Wolf, have done the best they knew how... in very trying circumstances, during very trying times. I was in Medellin in the 80's and I respect both men and honor their contributions to Colombia.

With respect to the narcos, I personally benefited from the narcos every time I went to San Andresitos and bought something they had "imported" as part of their money laundering.
