The joke is on me- help! me with what "american" foods colombianos like

This is actually a take off on the language barrier topic. I THOUGHT I understood mi novio when he said he was a great cook, and the whole family agreed. I am just now finding out it was a JOKE and he can't cook water! What "american" foods, dishes would most likely appeal to Colombianos? I can learn to cook Colombian dishes, but still need to put a meal on the table in the mean time!
I found out he can't cook when I said I preferred we rent an apartment on vactiion so we can cook etc. He assumed I was a great cook, which I am here in the states, not in Colombia! Help save my impending marriage!
Thanks, Maureen--

I am sorry I don't know much about american food apart from the fast food(burgers, french fries) Can you tell me any typical dish from USA? Maybe the way some states cook the meat or they do some the vegetables....

thats so funny Ok well, I am colombian and my fiance is american... I think every american is got a way to cook so yours may be different to his way...

Anyway, here is what he cooked that I really liked:

1) Great pasta (every type of pasta)
2) Meat Loaf
3) Twice baked potatoes yuuuuummmmmmmmmm
4) Cous cous with vegetables and chicken
5) Pizza (without pepperoni)
6) A wide variety of salads (not including rucula on them)
7) That mix of potatoes, eggs, onions and bacon for brunch
8) French toasts
9) Pancakes.
10) Mashhh potatoes (american mash potatoes are the best!)

Lots of calories... but we always try to have a little more vegetables and a little less of those meals.

I think a lot of colombians (at least the ones in my context) also love chicken in almost every preparation, potatoes and rice.

And if you know how to prepaire any thai, chinese or indian... thats the best!

I wish you luck and if it doesnt work (theres always sandwiches and pizza :))!

As far as I can tell, "American" (ie north American) dishes (remember this is America too!) here are limited to fast food such as hamburgers, hot dogs etc. You could try things like pizza, lasagne too as they seem quite popular. To say what "American" foods would be most likely to appeal to Colombians is a bit of a generalisation - it depends on what region your novio is from (ie in Bogota they seem more cosmopolitan in their tastes than in Medellin, for example) and what he's used to! Many Colombians are used to a staple diet of beef, rice, potatoes, plantain...

Chicken and fish My novia likes chicken and fish more than beef. One thing I noticed is that they don't seem to fry fish very often, at least in Barranquilla. My novia doesn't cook at all, so I can relate to your dilemna, "no se cocinar," were her exact words. I told her not to worry, as I have been a bachelor most of my life and know how to cook very well. I got tired of fast food a long time ago so I just bought a few cook books and got busy! I think she will be blown away by the wide variety of things that can be prepared with a little bit of imagination. ;-)

Can speak only for my novio He's paisa from Armenia. His favorite things are salads & soups. He makes both very well. His soups are broth based and usually are with seafood or chicken. His salads are usually mayonaise based with tuna usually and various vegetables and avocado and hard-boiled egg. He also likes typical lettuce & tomato/cucumber salads but with a lemon juice-water-salt topping instead of the usual US dressings. In the winter he could live on just soup & salad with arepas on the side.

I find his tastes to be more simple, a meat & potatoes (or rice) kind of guy. I make him beef & chicken stews, mexican dishes like buritos & quesadillas, chilli with cheese, stir fry vegetables with shrimp, chicken or beef, Italian dishes like lasagna, stuffed shells and plain pasta & sauce. However, the pasta dishes HAVE TO HAVE meat of some kind or he won't eat it (def. not a vegetarian). He doesn't think a meal is complete unless its con carne. Also, for breakfast, he loves eggs w/ tomatos, green peppers, onions & cheese or pancakes or french toast (w/o syrup for some reason). I've learned to always have arepas on hand for most meals, that seems to be a staple along w/ beans & rice.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey Maureen I cooked spaghetti St. Louis Hill style in BAQ...sweet red sauce like on the Hill here, with garlic bread and salad, topped off with salad dressing from Charlie Gitto's...they flipped out...all 10 of them. Plus I made enough for two meals. They flipped out again the second time.

Cook everything with a lot of hot spices. They love that. Also they like their meat very rare so give them a nice thick blood red steak.

If you are a great cook I'm sure whatever you make he will be happy with. If not let him cook it himself.

Recipe suggestions My husband is Colombian but he grew up in America so he likes both Colombian and American foods

When I’m not feeling like cooking a big Colombian meal for him I just cook pasta he absolutely loves it especially if it’s a la carbonara (mayonnaise, milk and cheese sauce with some chopped parsley), he also loves steak and fries and roasted chicken.

I marinade the chicken with chicken with beer, thyme and garlic for about 2 to 3 hours I then put it in a baking tray with all the juices, beer and the juice of two lemons and some baby potatoes, wrap it up in kitchen foil and put it in the oven to cook when the chicken is cooked and potatoes are soft take the foil off and let it roast until golden brown, don’t let the juices dry out.

p.s Colombian men love eating rice, mostif not all of them eat rice everyday!!

chicken and stews From collecting and translating Colombian recipes I have noticed two main dishes that are repeated in many variants: Arroz con Pollo (recipe somewhere in PBH, a lot like Jambalaya) and any kind of stew based on milk (chowder) or broth, never water! The stews all used at least 3 different kinds of potatoes, one of them thickens the liquid.

I AM SO HAPPY THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! I can cook almost everything here without even using a recipe. This is not the way anyone fed me when I was there (other than beans, rice, papa fritas). I didn´t see a green salad the whole time I was there and someone told me absolutely don´t give anyone spaghetti with red sauce!. I will get a good nights rest tonight! I may have to invite ya´ll to the wedding for all this help!
I really like the suggestion from Kernow62-- let him cook it himself. Anything I make is better than his hot water!!
Since I`ve settled down now, I realize he will probably eat whatever I give him and be glad to have it.

Oh yeah,
Fried catfish and hushpuppies with cole slaw. Just squeeze some lemon (not lime) on that fish and wash it all down with a cold one. Can't wait to get back and go to a fish fry.

Another typical US food is what they call here "Chuleta Valluna." It's just a country fried pork chop.

Actually, a lot of casero type food here is just the same as in the states, I've eaten a lot of corrientazo lunches that are just like my mom would make. The only difference being that we tend to use more spices and the native things such as platano and yuca. Also, I actually saw the other day that Carulla sells okra.
