The Hugo Chavéz Show

"Documentary depicts Chávez as a buffoonish leader
El Universal (Caracas)

Hugo Chávez rides a horse during his weekly broadcast Hello, President in the western state of Apure.

A biographical documentary on Hugo Chávez made in the United Stated portrays the Venezuelan ruler as a charismatic and buffoonish leader eager to become a myth, and brands his socialist polices as a failure after a decade in power.

The producers of the TV program interviewed former government officials, Chávez associates and ordinary Venezuelans to chronicle Chávez's ascent to power. "The Hugo Chavez Show" will be aired in English and Spanish on Tuesday, November 25 in a program of the US public channel (PBS) but will be available online at www.pbs.org/frontline/hugochavez beginning on Wednesday, November 19." (I've watched the first few segments, so far. An interesting presentation. It's available in Spanish, or mixed English/Spanish.)

I saw the documentary the other day. Chavez did not come off as a buffoon, but rather like one of those cool, talkative taxi drivers you often get in Medellin. That's what makes him so popular with the poor majority...he looks, and acts just like them.

Venezuela's the current foreign minister is also a (hold your nose) former bus driver :)

Obama in the recent 60min interview went at lengths to try portray himself in a similar manner and it did not come off...he still seemed like a highly educated Harvard elitist..that happened to get lucky the economy bombed just before the election :)

I just finished watching the entire video. Thanks for the link Sloop.

You may not think that Chavez came off as a buffoon, but he is obviously an ego-maniac, a braggart, a bully, uneducated, impulsive, insane, a liar, and a coward!

Agreed Mongo. And thank goodness he is no Fidel Castro. May his dictatorship end soon.

I must go back and view the remaining segments. It seems to have been well done. But with PBS, that's no big surprise.

I read an interview with Chávez in Newsweek a few years ago, and he actually came off as as somewhat reasonable.

What sticks is my mind is his comment that he didn't hate "Americans", only Bush. He said that he could talk to Clinton, but not Bush.

However, he is not on my list of favorite people, partly due to his government's refusal to issue a permit to the Las Cristinas mining project, and later annouced nationalization, and allow a Russian company to take over what Crystallex had developed.

I have a position in Crystallex, which is now virtually worthless, due to Tio Hugo's attempt to own everything.

¨¨ooooh aaaah, Chavez no se va!¨¨ That is the dam tune I had to listen to from those stupid trucks with blaring political music on Margarita island. There is a lot of stupid people in venezuela that look similar to Chavez and will vote him in because of all the little freebees he is giving them.

I booked flight & tried hotel on Margarita returning from Perú, but finally passed, paying more/traveling longer, flying Lima, Miami, San Juan.

I found those people impossible to deal with, and decided that 5 hours in Venezuela already was quite enough.

I just viewed the other segments of the Hugo Show. A sad story, but none the less, a well made documentary.

With the falling oil prices he may well be on a slippery slope.

jaja, I had no doubt they would. But to tell you the truth, my favorite part of thnxgng, is the stuffing.

What is sad about venezuela, is that it doesn't matter if they have some corrupt right wing gov that only favors the "14 families", or a left wing idealoge like chavez, venezuela is still a poor 4th world country, and the poor will continue to suffer the most until they get a governament that cares more about all the people, instead the corrupt pieces of shit from the right and the left that they have had for the last 50 years, but the venezuelan people have to stand up and demand honest leadeship, instead of following the piece of shit who promises them the most.

With the rise of China,India and many other developing countries, oil prices should average around $100 over the next 15 years, so it does not look good for the Americans.

It's sure going to be a growing problem. U.S. needs a lot more wind-farms, and solar.

Probably nuclear too, but I lived very close to the accident at Three Mile Island, which was unbelievably scary.

A little bit consumer discretion and wisdom would also not hurt.
