The gringonazation of our youth in the interior of Colombia

What is happening to our middle/rich class youth in Bogotá, Medellin and Cali?
They have completely abandoned their culture and now worship all that is Yankee
Last night my young El Poblado, Medellin born and raised brother in law had me going crazy listening to that gringo devil music chit, all night long.
My kids are NYC born and raised and have NEVER EVER listened to that crap
I asked him, “what the fok is wrong with you, where is your dignity where is your Colombian pride? Are your little Poblado friends into this chit too? He said “yes
Below are a bunch of very obvious bogotano injuns enjoying this mierda.
Have some fokin PRIDE, SELF RESPECT, NOT EVERYHTHIN COLOMBIAN IS UGLY!!!
No wonder violence is common in those places, they hate who they are, .

I'm sorry, but some languages simply don't work for Heavy Metal. Spanish, French, Italian... they just don't cut it... they don't sound tough enough. English is good, I think Russian would sound good, but German is the best.
There is just no way Latin Metal will ever sound as good as Metallica, Pantera, Tool or Rammstein.

There's no gringonization of any kind. Ever since I was a kid in Colombia I have heard young people listen to all kinds of music in other languages, mainly English, even if they don't understand what they are listening to. They think it's cool but it's always been there, it's nothing new.

I remember my father telling me that he was a big fan of Nat King Cole, he had his records in both English and Spanish, same with Bob Dylan and Rod Stewart.

There may not be "gringonization" with the music, but it has certainly seeped into other aspects of the culture. I think it is inevitable to some degree. That is one reason I like the "provincias. There is less foreign influence than Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena, but it isn't nonexistent.

I think that deppends on how the parents raise their kids. In the States, a lot of immigrant kids share a big deal of the "culture" of their parents. It is up to the parents to enforce rules; here or in Colombia, you got to spend time parenting your kids. You got to be on top of your kids.
Bad parenting , here and there and kids loose cultural ties to their parents.

elmodefoque says on Jun 27, 2008, 10:43:

This brings up an interesting question, why does one group, under the same flag, find it easier to embrace other music and cultures than others.
No doubt most of the kids listening to metal music are the colombian middle/rich class, but in Medellin and Bogota even the poor like that crap too. Don’t they realize this is the year 2008 and that metal crap died almost 30 years ago. Do they realized that most of those rock stars now suffer from high blood pressure, high calesterol and need Cialis to get it up, all those modefoques are middle age.
Wealthy Barranquilleros have easy access to all that gringo chit too, in most cases more so than our poorer injun brothers in Bogotá , yet they prefer Vallenao and salsa over anything else.
Ofcousres we have some knuckle heads that have strayed but very few.
I don’t get it, I can’t exactly pint point why cachaco youth is so into this chit, and is not just listening to that music is a way a life.
All over Colombia we have always enjoyed the respect and courtesy from our youth, it was always very refreshing but with this devil music crap, they 've changed totally .
They’ve become just like many gringo kids, complete disrespect toward their parents and elders.
What next, showing up in school dressed in black and shooting you class mates while listening to maryilin mendelson?

Actually, I don't think that the youth of Colombia embracing gringo culture (if that is actually happening) is much to really worry about. Anyone heard of the "British Invasion" of the 1960's ?... The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Yardbirds/Cream, Led Zeppelin, ect, more or less obliterated American Rock 'n Roll, but I don't think the U.S. is any worse off for it... better, in fact.

We have a little confusion between ORIGIN and OWNERSHIP here. Some music has an ORIGIN in certain parts of the world but who OWNS that music are the people who UNDERSTAND it. These people can be of any age race or creed and could exist anywhere on the planet in this internet age. ALL music these days is INTERNATIONAL."

Rubi, as a musician you may see things in a different way than us normal mortals. Yes, of course, music is universal but in casual (non-academic) conversation we usually talk about music that has developed, has roots, is part of the popular culture of a country or a region with a geographical determiner. Thus, cumbia would be Colombian, vallenatos, bambuco ets. too, joropo Colombo-Venezuelan, tango Argentinian, merengue Dominican etc. It does not meanthat those genres are not popular reproduced, played, enjoyed by other people of the world.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Jun 28, 2008, 00:36:

And yes, both Elmo and Rubi are right....for us who live in "exile" we would not want to see too much change going on, not culturally. Socioeconomic progress is welcome, safety and security improvement too, but culturally we would not wish to see too much foreign influence taking over the local, traditional cultire. To us Colombia should continue being the country we once knew, with its rich and autoctonous traditions and culture, not aping after the rich neighbours of the north in a pathetic attempt to look like, live like, become them.

And yet, for those who stayed life goes on. It's them who get to decide how much foreign influence will Colombians accept, how gringonazed they want to become. It's up to them. We have already voted, with our feet.

acordeons are made in germany... and most of the so called colmbian music has its original sounds coming from wide variety of influences like africa, cuba and center america not to mention the WIDE SPREAD worshiping for mexican music bah l...

Theres not only heavy metal around is many genres of metal for example black metal was born here in norway ...impossible to explain the wide variety of sound and influences and whats the problem of colombians listening to it ,I have even heard of bands from the very same jerusalem soooooo...

I been listening to this music since I was fucken 11 years old , is nothing new to me and actually one of the first bands i listened back then is norwegian , Im absolutely not ashamed or anything because i decide listen this and not vallenato I didnt borrowed the image or anything i create it and grew up as a metalhead

Im actually here making all this interviews and working in the metal scene with actual bands that are well known in all the world ( just for metalheads) and i know more than others that around here because of my research and work baaah and what no one has told me anywhere that i should listen vallenato just coz i was born in colombia naaa and yes I do know quite a lot about this but because I have been too muhc time in this, is a vaste genre with lots of influences from outside music , for example theres this band here which guitarist went to music school for flamenco guitars so he incorporates quite succesfully flamenco into something he calls extreme metal ...you really need to be around for years listening to know what the hell this is no matter if you are russian ,muslim or japanese ..metal is everywhere and even the same scenes of metal around the world got its own features and its own way to see things ,different topics and stuff for example colombian metal reflects all reality ,is focused in all the violence and atrocities but norwegian one is completely different more atmospheric and in sweden you wotn find black metal but death melodic metal they are the masters of it and so on every country is its own kinda stuff.. germany-thrash/ italy doom/ latin amreica/brutal death and so on that doesnt mean all abnds in every country play the same genre but the best bands out of that country happens to be playing those genres and their fans in their own country are pretty well influenced.

Norways music is more towards paganism and rescue values of the ancient viking traditions before Christianity came but the music that influenced the first black metal bands here was all from UK ,whats up is globalization all around please quit the narrow minded feeling ,I do have the right to be whatever i want and be wherever i want because im a citizen of this world that is quite little for this vaste universe and I do not believe in borders or traditions when it comes to what i like ...and Im glad i dont closed myself to just what colombia could offer instead I open my eyes to all whats going on around

Monpirri says on Jun 28, 2008, 15:54:

Colombian music influence comes from Africa, Spain and from the indegenous people from Colombia.
Here's an article from National Geogrhaphic.

Colombia Overview:
Colombian music and culture are truly representative of the area's geographic regions. As with many of the countries in the continent of South America, combinations of European, African and indigenous traditions emerged over the centuries, producing a wide variety of music (and dance) styles.

http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/worldmusic/view/page.basic/co...

"Cumbia is one of the world's great dance grooves. It is made up of merry guitars and accordions, torrid brass, and insistent, deep-toned drums and percussion, pounding out a lopsided, strutting 4/4 rhythm with a kick like nitroglycerine. Cumbia is the result of three colliding cultures that settled in Colombia at different times. Indigenous peoples were followed by the Spanish conquistadors, who added on Moorish influences from the sack of Granada. Finally, African slaves were brought in, and they supplied both the rhythm and the means to bring it forth. From its beginnings as a courtship dance among the slave population, cumbia gradually became the soul of the entire nation. The tunes on this compilation make it easy to understand why. They were licensed from the Sonolux label and date from the '60s through the '90s. Uniformly infectious and compulsively danceable, this is an essential party album, a good time on a disc. --Christina Roden"

http://www.almudo.com/Colombia-Music.htm

Accordions are made in different parts of the world but the accordion was invented in Germany.

"The accordion's basic form was invented in Berlin in 1822 by Friedrich Buschmann. The accordion is one of several European inventions of the early 19th century that used free reeds driven by a bellows; notable among them were:

The accordion is often used in folk music in countries like Russia, Colombia, North America,[1] Brazil and France. Additionally, it is sometimes used for both solo and orchestra performances of classical music, using a free bass system.

In Colombia, the instrument was first introduced by European immigrants and merchants mainly of German origin through the Antilles Islands in the early 20th century, where local troubadours from the Caribbean Region used it as an instrument to accompany their sung messages. This form of music developed into the musical genre called Vallenato, representative of Colombia."

I guess also a great command of the Spanish language to understand the stories put into glorious musical episodes between a man and a woman. Viejo Elmo, Caballo viejo is a pretty good song.
If you like Llanera music or if you would like to know more about it I would like to invite you to watch “La Dama de Troya." You will hear many more classic llanera songs from Colombia.
Telefutura airs “La Dama de Troya" everyday Monday through Friday at 9:00 PM central time.

In bogota all these cachacos cover their faces with their umbrellas or books when the sun decides to come out (about twice a month) if you´re lucky. These bogotanos are so white its sickening. Ever had a naturally brown bogotana with her pants down? legs are discoloured white because of absolutely no sun exposure. Plain and simple, climate in Bogota sucks ass.

OEEEE,

Dude have you seen all the other kids in Medellin that think they are in Harlem or south Central? I htink rock or metal is the least of your worries, most young kids in Medellin think they are living in Santo Domingo or San Juan, buncha Reggaeton, Daddy Yankee loving MF´s. Since when is Medellin the capital of Vallenato. Long live Guasca Music and Aguardiente!!! Antioqueño y paisa hasta el final.

Take you god damn Reggaeton and Vallenato and go and drown in the middle of the caribbean somewhere!
