The Great Colombia Investment Contest

Occasionally I read some great (and not-so-great) commentaries on Investments in Colombia. Many people are looking to move to Colombia to lead the "Poor But Happy" lifestyle. But, is this lifestyle really possible on a limited budget?

I would like to challenge all those PBH Investment Gurus to see who can make this lifestyle happen. Who really knows how to invest, from the ground up, to live in Colombia? This is your time to "put up" or "shut up". Academics and Investment professionals are highly encouraged to enter.

The winner of the Contest will win $100 dollars. This will be in the form of a Gift Card. The Gift Card you receive will depend on the country in which you reside. (Sorry, but I don't from what outlet the Gift Card is from at this time.)

THE CHALLENGE:

What is the best RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) you can make while living in Colombia?

The ROI will be defined as THE REVENUES PRODUCED OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD PLUS THE VALUE OF THE INVESTMENT (LESS ANY COSTS) IN COP. The investment does need to be in Colombia, but you need to RESIDE in Colombia.

THE PRIZE WILL GO TO THE ENTRY WITH THE BEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) in COP.

THE SCENARIO:

You are an American Citizen residing in Colombia. You have access to $48,000 in American Express Gift Cards. The Gift Cards range in value from $5 to $4,000 - you select the denominations. You can use these Gift Cards ANYWHERE in the world American Express is accepted. You CANNOT get cash back for the Gift Cards. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE MONTH TO MAKE THE PURCHASES FOR YOUR INVESTMENT.

INCLUDE IN YOUR RESPONSE:

1. The number and denominations of the Gift Cards used.
2. Your answer in COP. Remember your answer MUST INCLUDE THE REVENUES PLUS THE VALUE OF THE INVESTMENT BY AUGUST OF 2010 (LESS ANY COSTS). Assume the COP is stable in value.
3. An explanation, in exact terms, on how you would invest the Gift Cards to arrive at your conclusion. Please include all costs (i.e. airfares, tariffs, exchange rates, etc.) and approximate time (hours invested).

PLEASE - NO COMMENTS AT THIS TIME - ENTRIES ONLY. I will have another post in one month (AUGUST 7TH, 2008) to announce the winner. Please leave ALL comments to that time.

CONTEST CLOSES AUGUST 6TH, 2008.

Good Luck!!!!

i created a couple of contests sometime ago for the purpose of getting some pbher's to to commit to their statements rather than being on both sides and then claiming victory. so far, it is working.

but this caused a lot of bad blood here as far as contests go so i don't think you'll have many entrants.

but i'm game..............my investment will be as a coke dealer as you didn't say it had to be legal. also, 600 metric tons of coke coming out of colombia per year must be a legitmate business by colombian standards, so it must be legal.

$40K worth of coke that i buy in the jungle=80 kilos

$8K for travel expenses from Florencia to Miami on a borrowed boat.

80 kilos stepped on 3 times= $6,500,000.00

minus the $48,000 startup costs=$6,452,000.00

time period, about one month, so multiply times 12 for the yearly ROI.

let me know if someone else can beat this ROI.

if not, please pm me so i can give you my address for sending me the $100 gift card.

I had a winning submission but then I looked further:

- Applicants must be US citizens residing in Colombia. Ouch....a little bit of discrimination here?

- The prize is a gift card worth US$ 100. This really means it is worth the price of a cup of coffee everywhere else in the world.

Peter, have you ever considered a forum for.....oh, forget it!

harvardexec says on Aug 4, 2008, 18:18:

No, but I know lookatmepee well. I see him everyday. He works in my office.

Pee told me he was deleted by the mods for discussing urination. I thought this was extremely funny. Not banned for an insult or a threat, but for discussing urination in the presence of another person.

Does one of the mods work for the Taliban? Hmmmm....

So, which one of the mods are you Hollywood?

Mr. Hollywood says on Aug 4, 2008, 21:15:

Not a mod, which I'm sure you know.

It was just apparent from a previous thread that you knew much more about lookatmepee than most posters know about each other. Often that's a sign of double logins.

harvardexec says on Aug 4, 2008, 22:40:

Actually, I don't know. I believe you are moderator or you are friends with a moderator. Please help me understand.

1. How can you say "you knew much more about lookatmepee than most posters know about each other"? What supporting documentation to you have that pee and I know each other (other than I told you he works in my office)? I can understand we share the same biases with regards to our ethnocentrisms, investment strategies, and lifestyles, but I share these biases with a small number of people on PBH.

2. You and pee had a disagreement. Pee is now banned from the site for talking about peeing, even though he has had the name Lookatmepee for some time. I find this ironic. Other people have similar names (i.e. fartman), but they are not being banned. Maybe because they didn't get into an altercation with you?

3. This post has not been visited by anyone in a month. The day pee is banned from the site, you show up (1st time comment) on the post.

Sorry, but I just don't understand.

harvard exec or whoever you are..........i challenge the results of this contest.............pee's investment choice was deleted before aug 7 so it does not exist on judgement day.

plus it;s obvious that pee has a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of urine or urinating.

why do you think he was so upset about not being allowed to use the Admirals Club? this debilitating phobia would cause him to fail at whatever he attempted to do in colombia.

can you imagine the look on pee's face when he landed at Eldorado and found out there were no toilet seats?

i think i won the contest.............please explain why not?

Mr. Hollywood says on Aug 5, 2008, 12:09:

When did I have a disagreement with lookatmepee?

I'm not a moderator and had nothing to do with lookatmepee being banned. In fact, I didn't even notice, or know what that was about.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Aug 5, 2008, 12:43:

What a strange contest. $48,000 in American Express gift cards in varying denominations??? Why not just start with a nice round number in cash or an irrevocable line of credit? On the other hand, if you're fishing for business ideas because you have access to the gift cards, $100 isn't much of an incentive for someone to provide a detailed plan.

Note: Unless he has some secret powers known only to himself and Peter, Mr. Hollywood is not a PBH moderator.

harvardexec says on Aug 5, 2008, 17:14:

Tinto....and what a surprise you show up today....how ironic? Must be another random event?

Yes, the contest is strange. Unfortunately, those were the parameters I was given.

Fishing for business ideas? Sorry, but that is not the type of funding I work with in investments. I, too, would much prefer to work with sizable investment portfolio.

The $100 was something I wanted to donate out of my own pocket (recycled gift) to help spice the contest up.

To quote Gringoloid:

"...i created a couple of contests sometime ago for the purpose of getting some pbher's to to commit to their statements rather than being on both sides and then claiming victory....but this caused a lot of bad blood here as far as contests go so i don't think you'll have many entrants."

I agree with Gringoloid. This contest was a mistake from the beginning. Besides Lookatmepee's answer, there was not even a single educated response.

In the future, I will no longer host a contest and I will limit my posts on PBH. I tried to make the contest a more interesting by offering a small prize. Instead, I receive criticism about the contest and the prize itself. Rather that everyone experience a "win-win" we'll settle for the "lose-lose".

Want to make some money ?

Build new houses, remodel existing houses and sell or rent. You can make 12% per year on rental and ???? more on appreciation.

The only problem is that it's difficult to put much money to work with a high degree of safety that can obtain a degree of leverage.

There is one catch,, a person needs to know how to build and/or remodel Colombian houses, where to invest and what price range makes the money.

The Colombians think like this,,,, "why should I tell you something for nothing when I paid to learn it".

There is another method but there are those on this board who believe a bullet in the head should be given to those who engage in this LEGAL activity.

"When you men get home and face an anti-war protester, look him in the eyes and shake his hand. Then, wink at his girlfriend, because she knows she's dating a pussy." Quote - General Tommy Franks
