The Festival of Flowers in Medellin

Festival dates, August 1 - 10th.

Over the past two weeks, I have done an extensive search for flights on the above dates, give or take a day or two, checked with various airlines carriers and discovered the average ticket price is a whopping $1000.00 USD.

I have heard how great the festival is from many of my Colombian friends, without really hearing what is so great about it.

So, I ask. What is so great about the Festival of Flowers in Medellin?

Is it worth the trip for $1000.00 USD?

If you're not interested in displays of flowers on parade, horses on parade, or classic cars on parade, or beautiful women everywhere then it wouldn't interest you at all.

If you want pics go to Google images there are thousands of them.

I'm not convinced it's worth $1000.00 USD.

The flower fair is fun but not as fun as renting a nice apartment in Cartagena, stocking up on booze and calling up some prepagos.

Actually the rich colombians like the fair. They might avoid the popular events such as tablados ( free concerts), but they don't miss la cabalgata y desfile de carros antiguos. And a few other events.

On the flights you neglected to post departure city.

Miami to Medellin on Copa $518 USD including taxes stop in Panama City.

Been several times but I would classify it as "interesting." Mrs. Gator loved it. Of course one time we flew from Cali the other time was by bus from Bogotá. Mrs. Gator has a sister in Medellin so there was no expense for a room. Very large crowds.

I see the car parade from my balcony each year....the one that goes by Lomo's steakhouse in Castropol areal...

panthdave. you got yourself a great deal. I will call COPA later today.

I love a parade as much as the next guy, but ain't gonna spend the mortgage just for a horse and pony parade.

What else is going on during the festival?

How are the varies events set up?

Do people get off work? Are schools closed?

For all the hype surrounding the festival, I'm still not convinced it's all that great. I guess you have to be there. I will continue looking for a flight.

Thanks for the replies and photos.

I just spoke to both AA and Continental reservation's department on the phone. They both quoted me $700 round trip to Medellin, August 1st to Augst 12th. But, both quote me $1000 whenever I do a search on their respected websites.

That's a $300 difference. I could live with $700, since I do not need to pay for a hotel. Why is there such a great discrepancy between prices?

I found a roundtrip ticket last night on Expedia AA / Avianca for $450 plus tax, but need to see if I can reschedule the time off from my company before booking my ticket.

The dollar is up against the peso to boot.

I was able to book a trip from JFK/MDE from Aug 7th - 12th for $618 total. Outbound to MDE is on the direct and the return connects through BOG.

Could anyone recommend a place to stay in the $40-70/night range? WIll most things be sold out by the time I get down there?

I went to Avianca and you were, right, $1000. Then I went to sidestep (where I go all the time) and got a flight on Avianca with a stop for an hour in Bogota for $514 including all taxes (MIA-MDE). I opened another window when I was booking on sidestep for the Avianca site, no sure enough, the price as still close to $1000 USD for the same flights!! hard to believe!!!

I met this lady from Colombia on one of my journey (imagine that) and she is the one who turned me on to sidestep.

I forgot, Santa Helena the week before the big parade in Medellin is pretty cool. Its kind-of chilly up there and its where these older people (relative, but definately older than me) make the floats (things they wear on their backs made of flowers) by hand using flowers and ropes. You actually get to go into their houses and see them weaving by hand. The party is down this road that runs on the peak of the mountain (past the houses) - and all along the road they are playing music, dancing, lots of food, and lots of Pilsen. Make sure you take a poncho, last year it was very chilly up there, you could see your breath so I would imagine it was in the low 40s (F).
