This whole thread was more or less in jest. Yes, I got a spam, but I'm not too traumatized by the ordeal. As far as new members, I think it's great that they opened the site again.

Unfortunately, spammers, trolls and other virtual pains in the ass are a fact of life for any public site. Over the weekend, I shut one of my sites down to all traffic from Thailand. We were getting unsuccessful hack attempts from some university in Bangkok, so I simply shut off the whole country since we don't do business with companies in that country. Sadly, there will always be nuisances.

At work we do these kinds of things at the firewall level and thankfully the admins handle that stuff. However, this weekend I had to do it on a site for one of the side companies I own. I have a virtual private server setup for this particular site. Unfortunately, in IIS, there is no easy way to do this, but I found a tool that lets me control access by geographical IP ranges. It is a product called GeoSniper from a company called Tometa Software. I actually ended up blocking several countries in SE Asia, the Southern parts of the former USSR and most of Africa.
