The definition of "Gringo"

Hi Everyone,

I'm Russian. Do I "qualify" for gringo? :-)

I went to Colombia this year and no one referred to me that way. On the contrary, they thought I was from Latin America (that was until they tried to speak to me in Spanish. If there was a Russian-speaking country in Latin America I would have probably convinced them that I indeed was from the same continent.)

I got it Tot...maybe you have read some posts here on a general basis i can tell you that the term "gringo" is supposed to be used for the people born and raised in the USA; however,
sometimes the term is used in a despective way to refer to the them.

"gringo" is not used instead of "foreigner".... GIB is right!!!

For what it's worth, no-one (to my face at least!) has ever referred to me as "gringo". I am either "ingles" or "extranjero". I am fairly sure, however, that when a Colombian refers to "los gringos" in Colombia as a general all-encompassing group they may be implicitly including other foreigners, such as other Europeans.

While I don't disagree with Scotty completely.....I can say that after living in Latin America for more then 10 years and having met way too many GRINGOS !! I say that his perception of a GRINGO would apply to about a quarter of the ones I have met. As as the rest of them how do you say........UGLY AMERICAN.......and they just keep on coming......
