I remember when people used to ask me why I came to Colombia? I could tell them all the cool things I have found about living here. They would say something like welcome and am glad your enjoying our country. Some of them would go to great lengths to tell me that as NO ONE hardly was comming to Colombia. They liked the idea that a gringo chose to live in theri country. This was before all the security and all clear for gringos. If I saw another gringo in a tourist area it was a big deal. Some of you can relate, most of you can not.
Now there is no questions.... they just assume that I cam to dip into the prepago well or that some prepago visa hunter has got me on her hook. It is very sad what has happend to the Colombia I found in 1984 for the gringo anyway.
Everyone is praying for a strong dollar or weak peso. You know what that means? More gringos, more gringos and the rep just is gonna slip further down the gutter.
Oh well this is the way it is and every paradise is ruined when risk is removed and the wienies show up. Colombia is no exception. .

teeo9111 says on Oct 31, 2009, 10:56: In the grand scheme of things the overall number of gringos in Colombia is miniscule. Yes there are pockets of areas in Medellin that have a decent amount of them but it is still a small percentage compared to some areas of Mexico or Costa Rica. In Manizales where I live I can count on one hand how many gringos I have seen in three years, yes there are more than a handful, there are a handful on PBH that live there but in a city of close to a half million if there were a hundred living there it would be a piss hole in the snow. And please let's not start a debate about the gringos being to blame for the prepago proliferation bullshit because that is what it is,bullshit.

CharlieTheOwl says on Nov 2, 2009, 05:31: The problem is'nt gringos, its Colombian culture. Colombians exaggerate and create stereotypes to a large degree. For example, my girlfriend was looking for an apartment for me. She went to look at one apartment and told the landlady it was for me(gringo). She told my girlfriend, "they're (gringos) no good". All because one German guy stayed at the apartment and used too much water. Thats all it took to make her hate all foreigners. A few gringos dating prepagos is all it will take to label all of us as sex tourists. At the same time there will be Colombians that will think you are stupid if you were a "good boy" and did'nt get any action from the easy women.

CharlieTheOwl says on Nov 2, 2009, 06:31: Don't let it get to you. I've been the "bad boy" in Colombia too (who has'nt?). I remember one time in Cartagena I had a "dirty afternoon" with 2 prepagos. I did'nt have any cash in the apartment so we went to the ATM together accross from my building. I took out some cash and handed it to the girls in broad day light, in front of everybody (Colombian families, doormen, taxistas, vendors). I had no shame. As appalling as it was, I felt that these people repected my nonchalantness. The males in the Colombian families had envy in their eyes as if they wished they could be so brave to do the same.

CharlieTheOwl says on Nov 2, 2009, 06:54: Nothing stupid. Single male gringos in Colombia have no reason to sneak around with prepagos. Colombian men wish they can do the same. I remember one time I came out of Show San Diego in Medellin with a stripper. She was all over me. As I was getting in the taxi, she was kissing me all over. The taxi driver whispered "you fucked" as if it was a big secret. In the US, a taxi driver would say "you got some ass" and gave a high five.
