The dark side, from an Americano who knows

Having been dragged into a personal situation, that took me on a search,I have been extremley sad and frustrated.while I know the country is rich in history and there are many nice people, its the "Not so nice" that have ticked me off. While you and I would help our fellow man, many people want to profit on the misery of others. The average Colombian wants to be paid for everything.Lawyers are unscrupulous sharks, the justice system is a farce and many profit on the misery of others.
Colombia is known for its lack of Human Rights.Amnesty International has it on its list.Until something happens to you, then you would never believe what is to follow. You do NOT have the right to remain silent. You ARE guilty period. If you have dollars, you pay.If not you suffer..The prisons in Colombia, are filled with horrors untold, dedregation, abuse, unsanitary conditions and corruption.
People are so secretive and paranoid. They wear it.its all about money and who you can bribe. While I do feel sorry for the civil war and the suffering of people,I cannot understand why the mindset does not change. No way, will I visit Colombia.I am too angry!

Sad to hear Discusted,

Sad to hear your plight, but I guess you won't be able to visit 80% of the countries around the world.

prisons in Colombia Hey,I have done alot of travelling and lived in other countries.I am talking from a personal experience perspectiveOnr,which you do not know exists ubtil you are a foreigner accused of a crime. You are thrown in a hole with paras and murderers. You have no rights and are at the mercy of a foerign justice system which is one of the most corrupt in the world. You don't speak the language and have no family there. You then learn the ropes very quickly as well as who is your friend and your enemy. If you do not have money, you sleep on the bare floor and can't even get toilet paper.Your meal consisists of one boiled potato,a bamamma and some rice. You get lice and worms.Medical care?Ha! are you guilty?Hell no!(but who cares anyway?)Human Rights are non existant.Every foreign prisoner in there was a tourist.

I understand, and I am Colombian, for a country geographically as beautiful as it is, it's a shame life is hell there, everything is corruption, bribes, lawyers are corrupt, laws don't protect anyone, life is not worth a penny there, old people are discarded from society, children abused. BS and brivery for anything and everything. Social behavior non-existant, I still have ties there, but dread having to deal with anything there. I almost got killed inside a bank lobby, went in to pay taxes, a gunman started shooting with a "metralladora" and stole a guys back pack, that was wating in line to deposit the money for his boss (a bakery or flour company of somekind, that generates allot of money on a daily basis). The bank didn't even have a security system to check or detect arms, security guard half asleep doesn't check bags or questions you. Shots everywhere washed the walls and floors and windows as he exited to clear the way, a woman and a little child almost lost their lives. I felt like my last living day, my thoughts were I'm dead, while bullets richoted over my head, and my fathers caregiver was in shock, histerically crying I had to drag her down to the floor hard, because she didn't know what to do. I'm sorry for your bad experience, stay save.

Bye

ditto... I understand also, and I'm also colombian. But I've done my fair share of ranting and raving on this forum, so I'll let it go at that...:(

Prison Discusted, I am interested to know how did you manage to get yourself thrown thrown into prison while in Colombia?

Colombian Jails Are Colombian jails and justice system any different than any other Latin American country? Colombia is working to change its image and in time I expect things to get better there. Besides, I'd rather be in jail in Colombia than in Cuba. I guess the first thing I'll do when I go to Pereira is to make some political connections. Everything in the world is politics.

The Dark side Sorry to hear all that happen to you but, if wouldn't happen at all if our politicians instead of looking how to get rich for one side and the other the Guerrilla leaders selling to the poor campesinos some fake ideology that at the will translate into the same shit "Capitalism at his best" my little brother almost lost his live to on one of those assaults.

More on Colombia Two of my relatives are in there. They were set up.Thats all I will say.Colombia is different from other Latin American countries cause its the worlds largest cocaine grower, has been fighting a civil war for 40 years and is human rights issues have come to the forefront.I am amazaed how people copme on here wanting to tour the place as if
they are going to Hawaii. Its listed as the second most dangerous country in the world.Don't people read?even if you are an innocent visistor, somehow you will end up arrested for something.I know of many people in prison there from other countries. The indifference to what is right is amazing.People have become so indifferent after years of suffering. The Colombians here wear it too. They all have suffered in some form.Everyday, journalsits, priests, children are killed. Its very sad.I just hope my people survive for the next 2 years there.Paras in prison might act up again. There is no reason to go to Colombia at this time.It is dangerous. There is an Anti American sentiment getting stronger. Why were my relatives there?A Colombian friend sent them there for cheap cosmetic surgery, then set them up.I cannot live where there are no rights and people suffer.

Very sorry to hear this I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles, discusted. But forgive my curiosity, you are an American citizen with 2 relatives who travelled to Colombia for surgery? Was the set up drug related?

I have heard stories about the Colombian police at the airport saying to foreigners - "give me x $$s or I will plant cocaine in your luggage".

Surely if you are American your embassy will be able to help. I would imagine that they will hold some sway even in Colombia. If your relatives were set up for drug related crimes it is easy to understand that it could be a set up. Can they not help you? Embassies are there to protect their citizens from danger and there is no US warning sayign don;t go to Colombia at all - just certian parts of the country.
