The colombian passport -my experience in Colombia

I just got back from Colombia this weekend. Had a blast-seen my folks, took my husband on a tour, he now is a Cali afficiando-

Had a time with hotels though, please do your hotel research before you go...security should come first before affordability.Especially applies to Cali

Stayed at La Luna and got my 18k chain with crucifix yanked out of my neck on my first day!!!

Stayed at Duggers & Green-wierd hotel manager. Had antique pesos stashed on the corner of the room?

Finally settled for the Obeliso..highly recommend it. Great vista overlooking the North. Good neighborhood-El Penon

Got plastic surgery-Rino, buccal fat pads removed, lipoesculture all for 3,900 Gs. Was up and walking in 2 days. Befriended my plastic surgeon who took me to Club Farallones and his mansion in Cuidad jardin

As always had a blast and regret having to return to boring western NC

Did have a problem with DAS at the airport on my last day. I am a native born Colombian however of an American dad.
I was detained b/c I didn't have a Colombian passport. Obviously there is no freedom of speech. I cursed, maldilto this and that, demanded to speak to an attorney, cried, and stated that I never had a Colombian passport, cedula so why wouldn't they let me leave the country. All this occureed at 9:40AM , 35 minutes before Avianca departed...

Finally DAS let me leave as they seen I was escorting my 75 y/o father back to the States...Dumbasses..

has anyone ever encountered this problem???They said it was a new law-that a native born Col. must have a Col.passport regardless of thier official citizenship to exit the country????

that makes no sense Considering the US requires people to surrender their passports to get the US one!

I've heard that it's necessary to have a Colombian Passport. Even if you were born in the US and registered as a Colombian at a consulate, you would be eligible to hold a US and Colombian Passport/Cedula as the US/Colombia recognizes dual citizenship between the two. If you contact the consulate, you can get the info you need to get your passport/cedula. They can tell you what papers that you need for applying for it.

Best wishes, hope your next trip goes smoothly.

Latingirl, I’m facing the same problem, never had a cedula (was too young) and my Colombian passport is now almost 40 years old. I can’t even get a cedula cause I was never registered with the Colombian government, don’t have a birth certificate. My mother gave birth while she was riding a burro from a place near Riohacha (Northern Caribbean coast) heading to La Ciudad Perdida, up in la Sierra Nevada mountains . My people moved way up there to get away from the Spaniards; some of us could not stomach their atrocious body odor. Anyway, during our yearly hike, with out any warning I popped out from my mother’s womb and landed on my head. The fist thing I saw when I was born was a burros ass slowly walking away from me as I laid quietly on the ground, I never cried, luckily my grandfather was riding his burro right behind my mother and picked my slimy, naked little ass up.
I’ve been trying to get a cedula and Colombian passport for almost 3 years but had no success. I was asked for my Colombian passport a couple years ago, but not the last time I was there which was in Feb.
How long did you stayed in Colombia?

I'll get there, when I get there!

Unless you intended to stay more than 3 month in Colombia, then is ok to enter with your Colombian passport, but like me that I always stay for a month what's the point, I will have to paid more airport tax on the way out.

Too lazy to look it up But, Yes, travel to Colombia requires two passports IF you have one. Stand in line at the airport to get plane to US, large numbers of people are holding two passports one U.S. and one Colombian.

Somehow I doubt that you SURRENDER a Colombian Passport to obtain a U.S. Passport. Some countries are different and do NOT allow dual citizenship, but again, I'm too lazy to look it up.

Based on your account I'd say there is Freedom of Speech. Hate to think what would have happened at a U.S. airport,, not good I'm sure.

Said it before, don't mess with DAS. I'll say this also, get "past" DAS EARLY, ONE OR TWO hours early. Wonder what would have happended if detention made you miss the flight?

Still, seems strange, maybe father didn't have two passports? Traveling on Colombian only passport? He had two passports? Something "triggered" this.

Added this for those that might think drugs are TOTALLY legal, take a scale and make sure someone doesn't slip a few ounces on your person.

I don't know for sure in the case of COlombians but the USA requires Canadians to surrender their Canuck passport upon obtaining an American one. Of course, you can always get another Canadian one at any time, because you can never lose Canadian citizenship. So Canada recognizes dual citizenship and the US doesn't in that case.

When I became a US citizen I was not asked to surrender anything.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.
