The Body Beautiful

When in Colombia, I try to offset the consumption of all that fine food and cheap beer by regularly working-out. The gym I use is a low-key, friendly affair, and as one of the very few gringos in town, I’m a bit of a curiosity. So, very often, the young guys who use it come over for a chat. Frequently, they ask me for advice on how to bulk up (I’m about 200lbs, which, although nothing special in my gym in London, seems reasonably hefty in rural Colombia).

Well, first of all I tell them they actually look rather good: cut, athletic, fit-looking, whereas I look like an over-the-hill boxer gone to seed. I envy them their youth. But no, they look at the Schwarzenegger and Shawn Ray posters taped to the walls and they want to get BIG. OK, I say, it’s straightforward enough: Eat, sleep and lift; with a hearty emphasis on the first two. But to get android big, you have to give nature a helping hand. In other words: steroids. Mentioning that particular insidious shortcut always guarantees me a rapt audience. But, and in no uncertain terms, I point out that that’s the royal road to possible liver failure, strokes, tendon damage, cancer, etc. Sadly, being young, all they see are visions are hypertrophied bodies, with biceps like cannonballs and don’t see themselves lying in casualty with a grieving family around them. Perhaps it’s just as well that none of them have the funds to get their hands on the juice.

All this gets me to thinking: Will the excessive body culture that obsesses so many Colombian women, one day be taken up by the boys? I realise that at present, it’s an unlikely prospect: When the guys take off their shirts in the telenovellas, they are about as buffed and toned as we all were in the 70s. And, of course, with the men holding the purse strings the way they do in Colombia, moolah not muscle is going to be a guy’s primary aphrodisiac. But things change and shifts in the cultural paradigm occur all the time. It’d be a shame. As we all know, too many girls over there are going to ridiculous lengths to make themselves more sexually alluring: it’d be even worse if even more young people measured their worth by how they look. An inordinate sexualisation of a society leads to neurosis not happiness: we can’t all live up to the ideal...And that’s not to mention the fact that all the flabby gringos would be even greater figures of fun than they are at present.

Grooming Gym aside, it isn't uncommon for Colombian men to get manicures, many are also very vain about what labels they wear, so I expect that a continued and possibly increased interest in physical appearance will occur.

Gyms: I don't see Colombian guys venturing much into Schwazenegar-land because I just don't see enough demand or interest in that from women. There is fit and firm, and then there is bulked-up unnatural overkill, which to me, is far worse than someone who is a bit cuddly.

you dont need steriods to get big. Sure its a quick and easy way but not the only way. Most stories surrounding steriod use are just that..stories. There is very little research available on steroid use.

Besides, merely using the term "steroid" lumps all these chemicals into the same category, when different steriods have different chemical structures and properties. Highly androgenic steroids are usually taken in tablet form are the ones that will screw you and your liver up. Others, like nandrolone have no damaging effect on the liver and have low androgenic properties.

As I said already, very little research is available on these chemicals because they are illegal in most coutries, so that puts an end to clinical trials.

Go to www.nlm.nih.gov to check out the latest research.

The problem is most people don't know how to train. They either do too many sets with light weight or too much weight with a spotter doing half of the work for them. That leads to overtraining. I see it in Colombia and at the gym I workout in Bronx, NY. I'm usually the strongest guy in the gym wherever I go. I get a lot of attention when I move around heavy weights but I'm just doing what is most productive and what will get me in and out of the gym quicker. I only spend around 3 hours a week in the gym.

Wise words That's actually a very astute point. 'Less is more' is, as you say, more productive. And a lot of benching is just vanity stuff: the spotter doing half the work for some people.

Hola SG theres nothing wrong with slim guys at all. Just some guys like me only feel good when we are in good shape which means good muscles. Sometimes guys dont know where to stop and get too big and girls dont like it. For myself personally, yes i have to have fairly big muscles (compared to the average guy i mean) because of the feeling i get from it. I wanna be able to see myself in good shape. Yer and its nice to get girls looking sometimes too (but not that much in england lol)!!!

Its good that you work out...youre probably already very cute being colombiana and if you have a bit of a toned body its a big turn on 4 guys. Personally i like girls with a bit of strength in their bodies..its very attractive :-). lol.

As I Have gotten older, my focus has been more on cardiovascular than anerobic exercise, and nutritian. For a while a couple of years ago I was lifting a lot and started bulking up, but my work out partner stopped going and then I got lazy. Now I play a solid hour of racquetball with another friend three times a week and do 15 minutes of light weights three times per week to maintain myself. Unless you dedicate yourself, it's really hard to look like those guys that grace the front covers of Men's Health or similar publications, especially after you hit 40.

What matters most to me personally is my quality of life. I prefer to feel healthier on the inside then look buff outside. That's why I eat mainly organic food and do a lot of juicing. It makes no sense living until you're 75 if you are wearing diapers, connected to a kidney dialysis machine or walking with the aid of a walker. I personally would rather be dead then live like that.

It's all about feeling healthy.

That's part of my problem, especially with overtraining. If I don't go to the gym I feel lazy and/or tired all day. Years ago, my schedule in Santa Marta was this:

gym at 8 AM for 2 hours - heavy lifting
noonish to afternoon would be to swim the Rodadero beach from one end (past the bridge) to the other (past Mi Ranchito to where the other beach is, by the gym) OR jog El Ziruma which is from el Rodadero to the military base in Santa Marta, then back.

about 5 Pm go to the gym for another 1-2 hours, again heavy.

Then I'd go out about 11PM and dance all night until about 5 or 6 AM.

Repeat.

I'd only sleep a total of 3 hours a day for 2 weeks to a month. It got so bad that I actually decided to just relax one day. I started to get sleepy and almost passed out. the local doctor said that my body was so accustomed to be running at full, that when I finally sat down, my heartbeat slowed and that made me fall asleep. I stopped training that hard and don't do so now. I don't even party anymore so that helps too.

generalizations, my friend...i have been running and working out 3 - 4 times per week since i was in HS..i am a RMF now, so that should give you a time estimate.....its part of my lifestyle, and they will probably bury me with my weightlifting gloves and my polar heart monitor, hahahaha........never had to use steroids, and i will only admit to a chocolate donut or two....=).....i dont do the caffeine thing at all...i live pretty healthy, but since i work out so much and burn over 1000 calories each time, i can just about eat what ever i feel like, but for me, high protein diets work like a charm....it just gets harder as i, uh, accumulate "time"..aka growing older! jajaj...

But i will tell you this, most body builders have NO stamina, (read no cardio!) and are useless in a fight...sort of like a fart in a spacesuit helpless...they burn out too fast....i will take a female cop (who is a runner)as a partner in a fight over a bodybuilder cop anyday....one will last and the other fizzles out and could possibly lose his gun in the battle...to my detriment...=(

heres something even scarier....i went to one of the LA Sheriffs Dept jails a few years back to pick up a prisoner, and i kid you not, every Deputy i encountered looked like our retard governor Arnold S in his prime!!! They ALL had a set of guns on them that were huge, and i am not talking firearms!! Now, that is ok if you are living in the gym, because that is what you would have to do to get that huge, but these guys were bragging about how rich they were getting by working so much overtime in the jails!!! 6 days per week, 12-16 hours per day (per them!)...so when did they find time to go to the gym and eat, sleep, and fornicate????!!!

Bufalo, all you need to do is 1 set with a few exercises to stay in shape. If the genetics are there, you might even get bigger and stronger than the steroid dummies that pump up for hours at the gym. Keep the repetitions between 4-8. Concentrate on getting an extra rep and adding weight to the bar. Here are the best exercises:

Over head Military Press - These builds the shoulders and triceps faster and more efficiently than the bench press.

Weighted Dips - These work the chest much better than bench presses. Start out with bodyweight and then start strapping weight around your waist. You should be able to add at least 5lbs of weight every workout. before you know it, you will be dipping with over 100lbs around your waist.

Barbell/Dumbell Rows - these build thickness in the lats and middle back muscles. They also work the bicep.

Weighted Pullups - These give you that "V" shape look and and target the lat and biceps.

Front Squats - These are better and safer than back squats. Keep the heels elevated with a board and grab the bar cross-arm style. Keep the back straight and don't lean foward too much when you go down.

Thats basically it. That workout can be done in 20 minutes. 3 times a week in the beginning and then only 2 times a week as you start using heavier weight. Your muscles will then need more rest. You don't need bench presses but if dips are problem, you can subtitute one for the other. You don't really need to do curls or tricep exercises. The triceps and biceps are already getting enough work. If you have more time you can add these exercises:

1. Lying Tricep Extensions with barbell

2. Dumbell Curls while sitting on an incline bench

3. Dumbell Front Raises for the shoulders

4. Dumbell Flys

The main thing to remember is to only do one set with a heavy weight with each exercise. Just keep adding weigh to the bar. If you feel that 1 set is not enough or feel you need to more later on, you can do 2 or 3 sets. Any more than that is'nt necessary. If you are doing the exercise correctly and with a heavy weight, 1 set should be all that you need.

Cardio is important but too much is bad and can actually speed up the aging process. The simple act of breathing oxygen builds up free radicals in the body. Therees not much we can do other than get anti-oxidants from food and hopefully fight it. 20-30 minutes a day of cardio is more than enough. Any more than that does'nt really yield much more aerobic benefit. Even 10 minutes a day of cardio will keep you in shape and is leaps and bounds better than doing nothing. Its not so much the burning of calories that is important. 10-20 minutes a day of cardio will force your body to make changes like speeding up your metabolism and producing certain enzymes so you store less fat. Therefore, a guy that runs only 1 mile a day for 10 minutes will be in better shape than the guy that runs 5 miles every 3 days for 45 minutes.

Diet is simple. Forget about the 3 meals a day diet. Its better to eat smaller portions and break it up into 6 meals a day. The meals should be around 300-400 calories each. Studies have shown that eating smaller and more frequent meals speed up the metabolism. The body does'nt go into starvation mode and store fat like it does when you eat large 3 meals a day.

in a fight, the body builder has a better chance of shooting his wad and burning out rapidly..kind of like premature ejaculation (jajajaja..).then what good is he? like as strong as a limp noodle....

Well, i'm not a bodybuilder. I'm more of a strength athlete or powerlifter. Muscle development is just a side affect. I also do intense cardio everyday for 20-30. 10 minutes is still good and recomended for people with little time. As for injury prone, the guy running 5 miles is more likely to get injured. The joints and ligaments are'nt getting enough rest. Most street fights end on the ground. The guy with the weight and strength has the advantage.

Most street fights end fast, real fast. So the bigger and more powerful will usually win. I do like the UFC though because the smaller brazilians used to beat the really big guys. But that's not street fighting. The thing about cops is they are also deterrents. If they are big, and people behave, that is much better than being able to go at it for a long time.

I used to eat 6-7 times a day and built mostly muscle. since marrying the Colombiana, she cooks a HUGE lunch everyday, so I fill up quick. I'm finally getting big again because the other problem was when my daughter was born. I literally didn't sleep for a year and a half. Had to wake up every 2 hours because she would. That did major damage to me. She's finally sleeping and also in school so I got time to train again.
The pics remind me of when I used to work out with "El Pirata" in the afternoons on the beach of el Rodadero, miss that. My gym is closed for 2 weeks so I'll be doing hte cement thing at the local university here.
I used to get up to 80lbs dipping, just starting again and am at 20. I was doing really wide chins with 30, but after a minor shoulder injury, did the stupid thing and continued - resulting in my shoulder practically ripping apart, I'm finally doing a lot of chins now, but no weight.
Funny about the steroid guys, I was always smallest in all the gyms in NYC, compared to the juicers, but it was odd how I could do some stuff heavier or better than them (and was always in a better mood too). Thanks

Steroids increase the red blood cell count and cause the muscles to retain water. That causes the muscle to look bigger and puffy. I prefer the smaller denser look. Just look at some old photos from the pre-steroid era. Steve Reeves was stronger in the 1940s than the steroid freaks of today. He even looked better

bufalo My apologies for not replying to your query earlier- I have been offline for awhile. However, Morphus has answered your workout question more than adequately: certainly better than I could ever have.
BTW, the debate about who'd be 'tastier' in a street fight is fascinating. I don't know which side to come down on. The points about the necessity of good cardio to keep going, when the adrenaline runs out is certainly true. As is the observation that most street fights end up on the ground. As I say, a quality debate.

one of the best bodybuilders in history has to be Bill Pearl. Hes a real old school weight lifter and looked great in his day. Compare him to the modern bodybuilders like dorian yates who are bloated and have huge bulging abs (from excessive steroid and growth hormone use).

All the crap on this thread about fights makes me laugh. As for a runner beating a bodybuilder in a fight that's a ridiculous comparison. Most real fights last seconds not minutes. Real fights do not have rules and a referee and rounds.

Bill Pearl, San Diego, 1965

Here is Bill aged 35. This is a more natural physique. You can tell by the small width of the waist and the size of the facial muscles.

This is Bill, aged 56!! not bad !!!

He has a book out called "Beyond the Universe"..it tells his life story from when he first started training up until the present day. I havent read it yet but Im gonna get it.

I dont actually know his exact regimen....

Also check out www.billpearl.com. to be in that shape at his age is incredible and shows you dont have to lose all your gains like Arnie did.

A really cool book im into is "Optimum Sports Nutrition" by Michael Colgan. Its out of print now but you get it on ebay or google it.

GL...obviously you havent fought much...not 1-2 punch catfights like most drunks at bars have..strength has nothing over stamina/endurance in a "real fight" where it a knock down fight for you life type fight i was referring to..yep, no rules, etc..bodybuilders shoot thier wad too fast and poop out under prolonged intense activity....but feel free to disagreeeeeee...

Miguel_Clavo,fight in a bar Miguel_Clavo,
fight in a bar in Colombia and you get shoot sooner or later.
This stuff about fighting in a bar is so alien from a latin culture. It is a anglosaxon childish stuff, England, USA, Scanidinavia, etc.
I promise to you that you hardly see a fight in Italy or Colombia... guess why?
So it really doesn't matter stamina - endurance - strenght...
What matters is to have bulletproof skin, to be an X-Man, or to be green and kill with your fist... you know! LOL

I dont know, Robi666....i was in La Quinta one night in BAQ and two hotties wearing the skimpiest outfit i have EVER seen were there with their boyfriends...needless to say, the other male patrons overly enjoyed the view, and a brawl started which eventually involved more than 25 people..heavy wooden furniture thrown everywhere, bottles flying....lasted about 5 minutes, and sure cleared the place out rather quickly...then it continued outside....i just sat and watched, finished my beer, and then walked out, looking for my friends outside...the bouncers were nowhere to be found....i thought the bullets would be flying, but there were none...you are right, though, i will be bringing my kevlar vests there! i even had my latest issued vest cut for plainclothes instead of a uniform, in anticipation!! jajajaj...

maybe because it was New Years Eve ?

It looks like the guy fell asleep and spilled a perfectly good beer.
