The BIG differences between Colombia and U.S.

I gave a talk at the National University in Bogota and a student asked me, "What are the biggest differences between the U.S. and Colombia?" In my opinion, there are two:

1. The U.S. is a country of immigrants and Colombia is not.

2. The U.S. is a Prostestant country and Colombia is a Catholic Country.

He thought I should include that the U.S. is rich and Colombia is not, but I don't see that as a major difference. There are rich, middle class, and poor in both countries, only the percentages are different. All the 300 students at this talk were surprised by my response because those differences had never occured to them.

I am going to start two new threads about what I see as the two major differences because they are very different topics.

We were founded by the British and Dutch, Protestant Puritanical fanatics.

Colombia was founded by Catholic Conquistadores, but a lot more Colombians are decendents of the Pirates of the Carribean than Conquistadores. I was shocked when I visited the Museam of Cartegena and learned that the city was once attacked by an ARMADA of 5,000 pirate ships! That's a lot of damn pirates.

The immigrates to North America came for religious freedom and had no intention of ever returning to Europe. The Conquistadores came to rape South America of precious metals and go back to Spain rich. We are all people of the New World, but we have very different histories.

Personally, given the choice, I would rather have been a pirate of the Caribbean than a Protestant puritanical fanatic. At least they had a good time once in awhile. I hate the self-righteous mentality of the Protestants and enjoy the sinfullness and debaunchery of Catholics, who can have the sins washed from their soul by the magical movement of a priest's hand and a few words of Catholic mumbo-jumbo.

A former Dean of the Nacional University once said to me that the shame of Colombia is that Colombia was not liberated from Vatican tyranny until the new constitution of 1993 (I think it was 93). My response was that it is completely reasonable that Colombia was the last country to be freed from regilious tyranny because the Catholic church had an extra two centuries to pile catholic bullshit on Colombia than elsewhere in the Americas. It takes a lot longer to dig out from under four centuries of bullshit that two centuries of bullshit.

jaramillo, you are wrong. Don't you follow presidential politics? Remember when Bush got in trouble for giving a speech at Bob Jones University? The president of the university wrote in the published information of the university that Catholocism is a Satanic cult and the Pope is the anti-Christ. It almost cost Bush the election, because as was extensive reported, 25% of the U.S. population is Catholic. I did make an error, however, in saying 75% are Protestant. 70% are Protestant, 2% are Jewish, and the other 3% are everything else.

Of course, after the scandle with the priests buggering altar boys, the percent of practicing Catholics has dropped.

Robert Jorge says on Jan 11, 2008, 23:41:

Catgirl - your cited percentages add up to 219%. Just giving you a hard time ... purrrr.

Christianity includes Catholics. Catholicism is the first Christian denomination. Protestants were an offshoot from Catholics (Martin Luther). So if a person is Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, even Southern Baptist, those denominations can trace their roots directly back to the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Anyway, it kind of grates me when people seperate Christians from Catholics. By definition, Catholics are Christians and are the origin of that faith. It would be like saying there are Model T's and Fords. Not only is a Model T a Ford, but it was the first major, successful model that Ford came out with. There seems to be a big confusion with some people when they say Christians and Catholics. They actually mean, whether they know it or not, "Protestants" and "Catholics."

jaja I know...this is why I cited my source and after looking at the crazy numbers decided to add the definition of Christian. You see, many of those listed - if you ask some people are considered Christian (Protestant, Baptist etc..) It is amazing.

So the idea of the comment is (relation to the topic of the post)..."how can you make a presentation such as this? Where did you find information to support it? Look at the conflicting info about just "one" state" in the US? It is very diificult to prove this statement!" jaja" - OK? so I agree, it is crazy....Puuurr

Rubito,

I forgot about the difference between Catholic and Protestant Canada, but you're right.
Europe is also divided between the Catholic south and Protestant north. I also agree that life is more easygoing in catholic cultures. I don't adere to any organized religion, but I prefer catholic cultures to the protestants.

It seems, however, that not many people want to understand the difference. And that catholics are particularly defensive. I have no reason to be defensive because I'm a proud infidel heretic.

I think you're percentages add to about 90%. If the missing 10% are protestant, you're right at 75%. I make the point because I read 70% and I think that's probably right.

FDR once said: "The United States is a Protestant nation that tolerates Catholics and Jews."

I also make the point because with an Irish Catholic name everyone assumes I am Catholic, and I know the distrust of Protestants towards Catholics.

MMMmm hello slguy...having a good day?

Joetex: Interesting comment about Protestant vs Catholic. In the US some of the holidays we celebrate, we really don't know the exact origin of this. One example is St patricks day. As a little kitten I hated and feared this day..because if you do not wear green people have the right to pinch you - OUCh!
So as I became Cat - I learned from an irish friend that this holiday is truly based on a massacre. Anyone Not Catholic...were persecuted. I was told that on this day in Ireland Catholics wear green..but Protestants wear Orange in protest.
Again I am citing my source..an Irish friend..not attempting to create a big debate - OK boys?
Either way, it is a very interesting concept - if you don't wear green you get pinched. But in history if you were not Catholic you got.....
So now I refuse to wear green on this day, because
1) I do not have interest in participating in something that many people really dont have the facts on - truly (ask any Amercian about this, I have yet to get an accurate answer - they don't know - it is superstitious!)
2) If the massacre is TRUE I absolutely do not want any part of this holiday

OK - all done

I need to stretch my claws on another post

Protestant vs. Catholic? Pretty outmoded way of thinking about U.S. society. How many of either regularly attend church services? How many of either see their religion as anything more than something done on Sundays?

Spain wanted its colonies to remain dependent on the mother country - - especially economically. The spanish discouraged and outlawed trade, except between Spain and colonial capitals. The Spanish system of colonization also discouraged the kind of mercantile capitalism that developed under Britain's colonialism. So, for hundreds of years, nascent capitalism was throttled in most spanish colonies in favor of an older land-based feudalism (more akin to the plantation economy of the U.S. antebellum South). The legacy of this history for Colombia (as in much of the rest of latin america) has been quite tragic.
