the best visa for a colombian going to the uk

im trying to work out a way to get my boyfriend back to england with me. does anyone have any knowledge on which is better to go for: a 6 month visitor visa or a 6 month student visa? are letters of invitation better as originals? and how long does the process take - is 3 weeks enough time for them to decide or is it imediate if you hand the form in in person?
