Speaking of Los Diablitos they will be playing here in Tampa, Florida on Oct. 20, 2007 if all goes well. I have seen them Play here before and they put on one good show. I'll let you all know in a day or two if it's going to happen.

I do like this song the way it;s song.

A little tale, 5 years ago I found myself in Buga 40 minutes north on cali. The reason i was there was because I had a good friend in Tamworth a town close to birmingham in the "midlands" england, now I could go on and on , but anyway it came to pass suituations and all that stuff, I was at a loose end with a bit of cash and the aforementioned sort of ex thingy proposed a titilating proposal. she said with a tear in her eye and a small bit of dribble on her upper lip area, why not go to colombia and live with my parents ( she's colombian ha) I JUMPED at the idea with no reason or rhyme, SO , happy days, I made the necessary arrangements and damn the torpeodos of I skuttled. You - Colombiche - and he have similar tastes in your vallenatos.

I think I should finally aknowledge my friend, monpirri. Almost two years ago, now... after my first voyage to Colombia, I was looking for 'the next place to meet my honey' and he sent me some CD's about some islands off the coast of Cartagena and also sent me a "Best of Vallenatos" CD... along with a Cumbia Cd. This was before I 'knew little about anything'... but that CD he sent me with the Vallenatos was some of the "happiest music" I had ever heard... and that was before I understood lil of the words to the music.

Anyway...it's fun to hear/see some of those same songs on this thread.... and...
MUCHAS GRACIAS, MONPIRRI!

Please tell me that is not considered one of the best vallenatos of all time. I like the song but, Vallenato is happy and that song is not happy.

Smile if you are a thinker!

Colombiche says on Oct 6, 2007, 15:37:

Vallenato happy????? I think about 70% of vallenatos fall in the romantic "corta venas" category, 20% are puyas, 10% are genuinely happy go lucky.

Don't be fooled by the energetic beats. Behind almost every vallenato there is a costeno in pain, letting the accordion do the wailing for him or trying to get the love of his life to forgive him for his wrongdoings.

Let's see.

"Alicia Querida" is about a man whose wife died and he can't find solace for his pain (cortavenas)
"La Gota Fria" is about a bloody feud between two vallenateros (puya)
"Soy Rey" about a man who lost all he loved and is king of his loneliness

Soy Rey, a classic (corta venas):

No me den trago extranjero, que es caro y no sabe a bueno.... (Rafael Godoy)

Colombiche says on Oct 6, 2007, 15:37:

La Muerte de Abel Antonio (puya). About a guy who is mourned in his town for days and then comes back to everybody's surprise.

Colombiche says on Oct 6, 2007, 15:48:

Asking a woman for forgiveness (Perdoname, Cuatro Rosas, He Tenido Amores). Costeños are experts at the art of getting women to forgive them for their perradas. I don't see vallenato as a happy genre. It's full of sentiment.

No me den trago extranjero, que es caro y no sabe a bueno.... (Rafael Godoy)

Different folks different strokes
GS, thank you for you kind words and your usual humor.
You are right and partially because some vallenatos do have a happy tune or happy lyrics but overall vallenato songs are known for frustrated love stories, sad romantic stories and the stuff like that, as I pointed out in the email I sent you maybe a year ago, entitled “vallenato info." Do you remember that e-mail? The Cumbia CD has some classical happy tunes.

Some people love rancheras and as colombiche pointed out these songs deal with “despecho" so they tend to assimilate all vallenatos songs to “cortar venas" but the fact of the matter is that not all vallenato songs fall into the despecho or cortarvenas category. Some vallenatos are just simply beautiful and romantic without “cortar venas"
Take for example, the last two videos posted by stratowoman2, and if you’ll check this link http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/vallenatos1/ which I posted almost a year ago, you’ll notice a few songs where the accordion rules and the lyrics are subdued by the instruments maybe that is what you meant to say as happy songs to dance. Here’s another example of a happy tune, in addition to “Casa in the Aire" posted by colombiche posted, “Esta Vida" posted by love2colombia.

No, colombiche and I do not have the same taste in vallenato, I think you are talking about the pretty videos stories they appear to be similar, but I do understand what are you trying to say because you are trying to say that elmo and I do not have the same taste in vallenato, although I admit I do like some of Diomedes Diaz.
While in Bogotá a purchased “Super Vallenatos del Año 2007" the DVD has over 30 great vallenatos and it includes four good ones from Diomedes; Ya viene amaneciendo, No puedo vivir sin ti, Cuando falte yo and “La Plata," indeed a happy song.

I have seen many other Vallenato groups in Concerts But It's not until you get to meet these guys that you see how really nice each and everyone of them are. They all took time to talk with me with my wife translating for me. Emerson Plata even took time after his concert to go unpack his accordion and take a Picture with me wearing his accordion. From that moment on I knew I wanted to play the Accordion, Vallenato music of course.
I hope to meet more Groups in the future and see some of the guys I met again. Makes me sad I will never get to meet some of the great ones who are not here any more like Kaleth Morales, Juancho Rois and Rafael Orozco. All too young they died.

This is the ONLY kind of vallenato that I like. The story-telling, small-town, gossipy and authentical.
Viva el maestro Escalona!

Damn, I love that song!

Colombia, besides having the best accordeon players, they also have extremely talented bass players. Who would think that vallenato would call for such melodic and complex bass guitar work. And so many of the artists have great bassists. My favorite being Luis Angel Pastor ("El Papa" who plays with many people including Carlos Vives).

Desi, I also have a fondness for that type of Vallenato. Most of the modern stuff doesn't do it for me, but once in awhile I hear a new song that I can enjoy.

Hey guy,

I do not know why I'm shring this footage with you. The video is rather boring and it looks all fuzzy. It's from my trip to Quindío. The first part is traveling La Línea and the music is folkloric (Totó La Momposina). But the second song is Mi Alma Viajera, one of my absolute favorites from Los Hermanos Zuleta. The vid footage is of a finca that I rented while staying in the region, but it looks bad due to the fuzziness.

Nevertheless, I wanted to share Mi Alma viajera with you. It is a classic.

Thanks for indulging me.

Yeah, La linea totally freaked me out. I've mentioned it before on here, but the bus drivers are pretty crazy in Colombia. The whole way to Armenia they were passing rows of trucks around corners without knowing if other trucks were speeding downhill coming the other way. Needless to say, I bought a six pack and drank it on the return trip!

yes bass players do get a little fuzzy.

Lcacique says on Oct 14, 2007, 10:09:

Plato,

You nailed it. Vallenato really speaks to me. It is strange because, generally, I'm not a big fan of the accordeon. Maybe this says something about the talent and artistry of Colombia's musicians, because I love vallenato.

I was thinking about how some songs tend to weave their way into a person's heart. Sometimes it is the lyrics. The listener can relate to them. Other times it is the melody or the rhythm that grabs a person. It is often a combination of both for me when it comes to the vallenato songs that I enjoy most; however, it also has to do with the memories that are linked to the songs. I use vallenato like many people use narcotics: to escape to a state of mind that is preferable at the moment. The same way that the floral scent of jugo de guanábana takes me right back to Colombia, listening to some of these songs takes me back to the lazy nights in Montenegro that were spent in a hammock gazing up at the stars while a Los Hermanos Zuleta CD sang all of the birds to sleep. Or to the open air patio of a bar in Ibagué where my friend's family lovingly shoveled agaurdiente down my throat while dancing, laughing, and singing. All of which spilled over into the streets as we stumbled home, etc.

So you are very welcome, Plato. I'm glad you enjoyed them. For me, it's a pleasure to share them because it lets me relive some of the happiest moments of my life.

Lcacique - you're a poet. Your words describe the essence of Colombia - how my family describes Colombia both on the coast and in the interior - and *being* Colombian as well. Very powerful. Thanks.

Are you a musician, writer, literary artist of some kind? My family are musicians - paisa guitar players on my father's side . They play music such as Dueto De Antaño, Garzón y Collazos, and all the rest of them. My mother was from Curramba, so I share with you vallenato music's power of expression and many of its beautiful lyrics. It's in my blood.

Yes, I have played music for a long time. I got my first guitar when I was eleven or twelve, but I did not take music seriously until I turned seventeen and started playing in bands (rock music for the most part). From that point I played in bands until I turned 30 when a colombiana convinced me that I should go to college. Actually, I still play bass for a friend who is working on his second solo record, but I don't take it to seriously. I do have literary interests as well, but I have not been able to devote much time to it as of yet. Nevertheless, I appreciate your kind words.

I have not heard of the two groups that you listed. I'll have to try to find their music. I love guitar based latin music (for example el son de cuba: Guillermo Portabales, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo, etc.). I always love hearing new bands. So, THANK YOU. Do your relatives still play music?

Como tienes la música en tu sangre, y yo la tengo en mi sangre también, supongo que somos hermanos.

Thanks again for your kind words. It means a lot more to me since it is coming from a Colombian.

Hey, does anybody know if Rosendo Romero recorded CDs? Are they available? Where?

eywed's first comment at the top of this page has Romero singing his classic song, Fantasia, in a home with a single accordeon player. Anyway, the man was a great songwriter, but I've never been able to find a CD where he is singing his songs.

Here's Carlos Vives sing Romero's song Noche Sin Lucero. The sound quality is awful, but the song is excellent:

Two things I do not understand.

(1) How so many good modern songs lack YouTube stage footage or video -- nothing for Amor Sensible except a few drunk karaoke clowns who sing worse than me?

(2) The casual attitude towards spelling and names -- How can it be Octavio MeZa on his CDs and Octavio MeSa everywhere else? How come Youtube video songs have different names than those on his CD? I'm not anal or pedantic, but I do find it weird.
