the best salsa...

we know you all have your favorites,
and we would all like to share them,
but forget the music,...
oldbongo dares anyone to refute his posit that his homemade salsa cucaracha is the best condiment on earth.
...of course one must be sufficiently cultured and educated to appreciate its delicate composition.
...desi.

This is the best salsa ever. I'm so confident of this I'll tell you the ingredients. Just the thing for when you have the munchies.

3 large very ripe tomatoes (~2#), cored and diced small
1/2 cup tomato juice
1-2 jalapeno or other fresh chiles, minced
1 medium red onion, diced small
5 medium garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, minced
1/2 cup juice from 4 medium limes
salt, chili powder, cayenne pepper to taste

When Canadians say "salsa", they usually mean something like a Mexican pico de gallo. But when Oldbongo says salsa cucaracha, I think he's found a new use for leftover joint butts. Like salsa colita. Why would you make homemade salsa golf? :)

salsa de vino tinto
salsa muselina
...
just to mention a few good sauces

Cheers,

(and no, oldbongo, I don't WANT to know the ingredients of your salsa cucaracha. It's probably something vile.)

After a couple bong hits ... I think all salsa becomes positively gourmet! As oldbongo will most likely attest, the more you smoke, the less it matters what your food actually tastes like. In theory, enough weed could even make those bland aprepas into something delectable, although most people would probably pass out before reaching that point.

kat1...Salsa for taco's I would like a recipe for a good Taco Sauce made from local ingredients. Exit has several imported salsa's, but they are very expensive.

Mononoke28 says on Apr 19, 2007, 15:27:

This is a very... ... good salsa recipe:

1 can of whole tomatoes
1 can of ROTEL (not found in Colombia unfortunately)
½ cup of green onion finely chopped (I use onion powder because I can't stand onions)
3-4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
1 handful of cilantro
Salt to taste

Blend all ingredients and enjoy. Every time I make this people can't stop eating it and it's usually gone in like 20 minutes.

kat... after much deliberation,
the home made picante will be just fine, please.
you send me yours, and i'll have porky fly over with one precious gram of salsa cucaracha, but only if you promise not to share it with desi....she's too prude.

Man Tequila says on Apr 19, 2007, 22:50:

If ROTEL stands for "Roach Motel" than maybe that explains Oldbongo's salsa cucaracha.

Pico de gallo... Doesn't that translate to "beak of a rooster?" Always wondered about that....

kat1 (Moderator) says on Apr 20, 2007, 08:48:

oldbongo is very simple my recipe but i can guarantee you it's very hot and it goes wonderful with meats, empanadas, arepas, everything.

ingredients
lots of very hot chillies
lots of onions
lots of garlic
white wine vinegar
cilantro

chop each ingrediente separately and very finely but extremely finely
add the white wine vinegar enough to get the right consistence, not too runny or to pasty, put it in a jar and it will keep for a long time and enjoy.

sweeeet!! just right,
not too complicated.

howdy..
pico de gallo does translate as you said, but,
the dish is named so because the ingredients are prepared in small pieces so that the guests can eat them with their fingers, reaching
into the communal platter like roosters pecking at their food.

ROTEL does not exist in Canada, I gather it is a mixture of diced tomato and chili brought to you by the kind folks at Con Agra foods.

Roach is one name for the end of a marijuana joint.

Cucaracha also means roach. Oldbongo makes salsa cucaracha.

Roach motel is a trap you can buy to catch cockroaches. Motels often shorten their names to things like ROTEL.

Salsa golf is an abomination to me, like soup to Mafalda.

Some things just aren't worth explaining. ;)
