THE BEST ACCOMODATIONS IN MANIZALES AS OF DECEMBER 2007

I have been here in Manizales for the better part of the last 10 months. As far as I am concerned - and as far as I know thus far - the best bets for clean, quiet and comfortable lodging in Manizales are the following:

1. Apartestudios Cupido - actually a series of four or five apartments located about the Palermo area, all within short walking distance of one another and the Cable Plaza. Take a look at the guy who operates them, Dick Dickerman - his web page at www.colombiacupido.com for pricing and availability. They are high quality and very private. This same guy has six more loft type apartments under construction, due for completion in late february 2008. He rents them primarily to his clients (he owns a dating agency in Manzales), but also rents to travelers and is I think, getting set up with a few big travel booking websites like Expedia to market them. They have computers and internet, and I think he has slingbox hooked up to some of them. All are furnished with cable TV, washers and dryers and kitchens.(57)(6) 887-3115

2. Varuna Hotel- Calle 62 No. 23C-18. $50-$75 a night for a suite. The best of the rest - period. A few blocks from my apartment in the Cable Plaza area. Don't even bother with the rest if they have a room.

3. Regine's Hotel - Calle 65 # 23B113. $45 and up per night. Quiet and near Cable Plaza. Very clean. (57)(6)887-5360

4. Hotel Carretero. Calle 36 No. 22-22 (just off Avenida Santander) $75-115 a night. Nice rooms, large hotel. On a very busy street. Seems to cater to business types.(57)(6) 884.0255

5. Hotel Estelar Las Colinas. Calle 22 No. 20-20. $105-125 a night. Pricey but rooms are nice and probably best place for downtown location - and I mean it is smack in the middle of downtown Manizales.(57)(6)884.2009

There are probably 25 other hotels and lodgings available in Manizales. These are the best however. The others are rather shabby hotels, or pensiones, hospedajes, walk-ups and generally are in downtown and run down. I am staying at one of Dick Dickerman´s places. It is really nice and he gave me the same deal as the Ventura at about 65 dollars a night. It is a 2 bedroom place short walking distance to Cable Plaza. You would have to email him to see if would give you the same deal or not. It is a two bedroom nicely furnished apt so I might have gotten lucky. Dick is a heck of a guy though. He let me shower at his own apartment when the block I was on had the water shut down due to a break in the water main for about 3 hours. He is a great guy.

You´re right about the Venture too, it is a first class hotel. One of the best I have stayed at in Colombia and brand new at 5 months.

Why in God's name would anyone want to do business, of any kind, with a guy called Dick Dickerman?
